Volume 1 Chapter 4 The Fallen Guildmaster [Irankus]

Volume 1 Chapter 4 The Fallen Guildmaster [Irankus]

Frederica, the maid serving Guildmaster Act, wakes up early.

She wakes up at 4:30 AM and gets ready.

Act's mansion isn't that large, but it's big enough to employ staff.

Frederica walks down the hallway in a crisp outfit and heads towards the other staff.

The staff are already moving around, cleaning the mansion from morning.

Soon after finishing their routine work, morning assembly begins.

 "Good morning, everyone."

 ""Good morning!""

Those who live and work in his mansion are all people with troubled pasts.

Former slaves, Beastmen, etc., who had lost their place and were at a loss, were picked up and employed by Act.

 "Elder Sister Frederica!"

The head chef's daughter raises her hand.

"Sir Act ate my cake, is that true?!"

A Beastman girl, barely ten years old, says cheerfully.

"Yes, he said it was good work."

 "Yay!"

 """Kuu...! How nice...!"""

The staff look enviously at the jumping girl.

"Damn! To be pleased by Sir Act! I'm jealous!"

"I'm going to study cooking from my mother to make Sir Act even happier!"

All the staff deeply respect and like Act.

He picked them up and raised them, saying "It would be a waste to let such talent go to waste," even though they had nowhere to go.

"By the way, little lady Frederica"

The dwarf in charge of the gate raises his hand.

"*He's* here again? He's been here all night?"

The staff all wrinkle their noses.

Everyone has a bad feeling towards him.

It's understandable, after all, he's the one who expelled their beloved and respected master.

"Leave the [garbage disposal] to me, everyone, please do your own work. Alright?"

 """Understood!"""

 Then,

Frederica went outside the mansion and walked through the morning mist.

A suspicious man was peeking at her from behind the shadows of the mansion.

"Do you have business with us? Sir Irankus?"

The bald, fat man called Irankus, flinched!

 and stiffened his body.

"I, I'm not a suspicious person! I'm the Guildmaster of the large-scale Adventurer's Guild [Trueborn Hero]!"

"You mean, former large-scale Guild, don't you, Mr. Irankus?"

The middle-aged man gave her a cold stare; he was the Guildmaster who had once expelled Act.

"O-oh, is this not Lady Frederica?"

Irankus rubbed his hands and bowed his head obsequiously; not a trace of his former dignity could be felt.

 "How is Sir Act doing?"

Surprisingly, Irankus was addressing the exiled [Act] with a title.

It showed how much the difference in their abilities had widened.

"My lord is still asleep. Please make an appointment before coming if you have business. It's bothersome to come so early in the morning."

"I-I'm sorry! But Sir Act is so busy that I can't get an appointment..."

He had been staking out from night until dawn, waiting for his chance.

 "What do you want?"

Irankus squatted down on the spot and bowed deeply.

"Please, Sir Act! Return to our Guild [Trueborn Hero]! We want you back...!"

 "Again," Frederica sighed.

"It's been several years since we foolishly expelled Sir Act! Our Guild has been declining ever since! It was thanks to his outstanding Appraisal Eye and nurturing skills that our Guild was running, and we realized it too late! We're on the verge of collapse now!"

Irankus, trying to gain sympathy, was groveling on the ground, making a pathetic voice.

"Please come to our Guild again and rebuild it!"

Frederica looks at him with disdain, as if he were trash, and says dismissively.

 "We refuse."

 "Wha!? Why!?"

"It's a bit too convenient to tell Sir Act to leave unjustly and then ask him to come back, don't you think?"

"W-Well then, how about we join forces with Sir Act's [Gem of Heavenly Gift]!"

"Out of the question. There is absolutely no benefit for us."

[Gem of Heavenly Gift] was established a few years ago, yet it has been chosen as one of the most renowned Adventurer's Guilds in the kingdom.

It is following a fate completely opposite to the once prosperous [Trueborn Hero].

 "Please leave."

"Wait! Sir Act is a kind soul who saves the weak, right? Please help us...!"

Seeing Irankus cling to Frederica's leg... she rarely showed her emotions.

 "...Enough already, you insect."

 Crick...!

 The ground became [frozen].

A pale blue light radiates from Frederica's body.

On her head are [wolf ears], and from her backside, a tail protrudes.

"...I won't let you forget the crime of not only exiling Sir Act that day, but also of attempting to [kill] him using your subordinates."

 "Hiiiii!"

Irankus's body freezes solid, leaving only his head unscathed.

"The master extends a hand to the weak and brings hope. But that is only to help the truly good weak! There is no mercy for true evildoers like you!"

Frederica's body shines brightly, and what stands there is a massive [wolf].

"W-Wait, Fenrir!? Why is the monster from the most challenging dungeon, [Ice Prison], here!?"

...No, Frederica shook her head and returned to her human form.

"I apologize, I got a bit carried away."

With a snap, the ice melts away.

"I understand you wish to connect with Sir Act. However, before that, don't you have something else to do?"

 "S-Something to do?"

"You should make an effort to rebuild the Guild yourself."

Frederica coldly declares, and Irankus shakes his head.

 "I, I couldn't possibly do that!"

"Since you've expelled Sir Act as useless, I assume you must be quite capable?"

Knowing fully well that this isn't the case, she remarks.

"It's still too early to rely on the Master. You should still be able to do your best at your own place."

With that, as if to signal the end of the conversation, Frederica turns on her heel.

"You are free to reveal my true identity, but just know that I cannot guarantee your life in that case."

 Crying out, Irankus departs.

Driving away the pests that get close to Act, she lets out a sigh of relief.

She closes her eyes, recalling her Master's words.

'If you have nowhere to go, come to my side.'

'It would be a waste to let that power rot underground.'

'I need you for the ideal Guild that I will create.'

Likely in the future, the same kind of useless Humans will approach the Master.

 But her determination remains unchanged.

"I will protect the Master, so that you can pursue your ideals."
