Volume 3 Chapter 4 ACT.40 Two People in a Pair (III)
"Collusion, huh?"
With a flippant look on his face, Noah took a sip of cheap wine and murmured with a hint of melancholy.
The setting was the town of Mimosa, where the estate of Baron Eltor was located.
In a tavern in Mimosa, he and Rai were having a meal.
Naturally, their attire was different from that of the Purge Knights; they were dressed in casual clothes.
This was so they could eavesdrop on the conversations of the townsfolk and gather some basic information.
However, since they had arrived a bit too early, there weren't many people around.
Without any other choice, they engaged in light-hearted banter instead.
"Is there any benefit to colluding with a Reincarnator, Senior?"
Nibbling on a side of bread, Rai wetted his mouth with a drink of water before responding to Noah's question.
"The thing about Reincarnators is that it's not just their cheats (special abilities) that make them frightening. ──In some ways, their memories (knowledge) can be more troublesome than any cheat (special ability)."
Saying this, Rai furrowed his brow slightly and tapped his finger against his temple as if recalling something from the past.
"It's often seen that Reincarnators who have lived in another world try to utilize the knowledge they gained there in this world. For example, they might create better fertilizers than current ones for crops, or possess techniques to generate unique metals."
"So, what's wrong with that?"
With a puzzled expression, Noah responded.
"I mean, isn't that something that could improve this world?"
He expressed such a straightforward thought.
Normally, questioning the ideals of the Holy Church and speaking out against them would be deemed a punishable act for someone belonging to the Holy Church.
A Holy Knight, especially a Purge Knight, certainly shouldn't say such things.
──However, this knight, Noah Lowe, was different. He was not a dutiful knight who followed the doctrines and teachings of the Holy Church.
Rather than being a Holy Knight who is devoted to ideals or teachings, emphasizing practicality and results, he was more like a realist, close to a scholar.
"That's something you absolutely shouldn't say in front of Ms. Leone, okay?"
"Y-yes, I'm aware."
It's clear that if he said that in front of Leone, who takes the church's teachings as absolute, it would lead to serious trouble.
He seems to understand that, which is why he voiced that question to Rai.
He knows that Rai wouldn't just say something thoughtless, and would provide a proper reason.
"Indeed, technology itself has no good or bad. However, in this world, there is something called balance."
"Balance?"
"The technology and knowledge that are rooted in this world now, are extensions of the technologies from the past, right?"
"Yeah, it's like how science originated from the kitchen."
"Exactly. There are fundamental principles that trace back to all technologies. ──So, what happens if suddenly a new technology, better than the existing ones, is brought in from another world?"
"Everyone tries to use that new one, right?"
"But what if there's some flaw in that technology?"
"──Ah."
What if, after the influx of this foreign technology, there was a terrible flaw?
For example, what if a new fertilizer that initially boosted crop growth suddenly caused a mysterious epidemic?
If the technology were an advancement of an existing one, they might trace back through the developmental lineage to find the cause and a solution.
After all, if it were a technology gradually developed to suit this world, the risk of such rejection effects should be low.
──But can technology from another world even be utilized as is in this world?
"The technology and knowledge brought from another world could fundamentally disrupt the balance of this world. That's why the Holy Church regulates it."
"I see."
He nodded in understanding with a slightly drawn-out tone.
In response, Rai stated his own theory, concluding this topic.
"This world will develop by its own power. It doesn't need outside assistance."
