"A knight of justice wouldn't abandon innocent people, would they?"
That man, apparently named Sanson, was a changed person.
Gone was the fear he'd shown moments ago towards the Purge Knight.
Now, he was holding Rai and the others hostage, his actions bordering on desperate.
"You're the Reincarnator."
Rai asked calmly, his hand still poised.
Sanson grinned back, a knowing smirk playing on his lips.
It seemed he was right.
──But that didn't necessarily mean Sanson *was* the Reincarnator.
A shard of glass was clenched in Sanson's right hand, cutting into his own flesh.
The sudden shift in his demeanor.
The attack by that boy and Johnson before.
In the reports Rai had access to, there was a similar cheat (special ability) with those characteristics.
It was──
"──Possession?"
A cheat (special ability) that allowed one to transfer their consciousness into another, to manipulate them.
The disregard for his own body, the sudden changes in others.
Those traits matched a particularly troublesome cheat (special ability) that the Holy Church had confirmed.
"What do you think? Maybe we should kill this guy to be sure?"
The female Reincarnator asked, her tone laced with malice.
In this case, attacking Sanson's body likely wouldn't harm the Reincarnator themselves.
Rai had felt it when he reviewed the data; dealing with this was difficult.
Unlike other Reincarnators, eliminating the target in front of him wouldn't solve the problem.
And with the Reincarnator's true identity unknown, they had the upper hand.
Finally, the Reincarnator had revealed itself.
But the situation was bleak.
Rai had to make a difficult decision.
"Reincarnator, you seem to have made a mistake."
"──What?"
"Hurting innocent civilians would certainly be a taboo for a Holy Knight. ──But, for the greater good, it's permissible."
──In an instant, he draws his sword.
Ignoring the hostages entirely, Rai closes the distance in a flash, slashing at the possessed Mr. Sanson.
The speed of his attack is so swift that the hostages remain unharmed.
Before Sanson even hits the ground, Rai extends his left hand into a palm strike and sends it flying through the air.
He slams his palm into the neck of the man who had been held hostage, snuffing out his consciousness.
"Well, I was surprised. I didn't think you'd actually kill him."
Noah lowers his bow with a look of relief mixed with something else.
"Ordinary people are innocent. Of course, I wouldn't kill them."
Rai says this with a hint of exasperation, but Noah knows.
──This junior senior of his wouldn't hesitate to do so if the situation called for it.
"But, the situation is dire. When dealing with a Reincarnator of the possession type..."
"Yes, as long as we're in this town, everyone is an enemy and everyone is a suspect..."
──This place is already a spiderweb.
There's no safe zone.
