Volume 2 Chapter 8 ACT.30 Town Threat (I)
The sun was high in the sky during the day.
After last night's battle, Rize woke from her nap at that time, making a light round of the town.
"Ah, I slept well."
In a room of the church that served as her base in the town, she got up from the simple bed, stood up, and splashed her face with water from a nearby bowl, shaking off the lingering drowsiness.
She caught sight of her reflection in the water and snapped back to reality.
What reflected back was the face of an ordinary girl with familiar red hair.
A few years ago, she was saved by a Purge Knight, and she had decided to become a beacon of hope herself, putting in the effort to be where she is now.
If she could resolve this incident successfully, she might be able to join the ranks of the admired Purge Knights──what a joyous prospect.
However, Rize still harbored a twinge of anxiety.
"──Am I really worthy of being a Purge Knight?"
Rize had sparred with her senior knight, Rai, several times, but she still hadn't scored a single point.
And yet, due to a vacancy, her opportunity had come sooner than she expected.
Even if she managed to get through this, could she really take pride in it?
The face reflected in the water was still that of the determined girl from that day, which only stirred Rize's heart more.
Just as she was about to succumb to gloomy thoughts, Rize clapped her hands to her cheeks.
"Alright, let's do our best."
Muttering this, she encouraged herself softly.
She knew that all she could do, despite her lack of talent, was to try her hardest.
While she was doing this, there was a light knock at the door of the room.
"Lady Howell, are you awake?"
The gentle voice of an elderly woman called out.
"I'm coming."
Answering the voice, she quickly tidied herself up and opened the door to step outside.
Waiting for Rize outside the door was the elderly sister who managed the church she was currently staying at.
"Good morning, Sister."
"Good morning, Lady Howell. Sir Conwell is already in the dining hall, so I'll show you the way."
She said that and quietly followed her.
Along the way in the hallway, she passed by young novice sisters several times, exchanging light bows.
This church was a large building that also served as dormitories for the working sisters, and it had a slightly larger dining hall.
Entering the dining hall behind the old sister, she found, just as she had said, that there were already guests.
A beautiful boy with slightly long black hair, slender like a girl – it was Rai Conwell.
He noticed Rize's presence just as he was scooping soup from his plate with a spoon and bringing it to his mouth.
"I'm sorry for being later than you, Senior."
"No, I don't mind. There's soup and bread, so let's finish our meal quickly."
At Rai's words, Rize nodded quietly.
The old sister placed the same soup and bread that Rai was eating in front of Rize, and she took a seat there.
"Let's eat."
As she brought the soup to her mouth, Rai began to speak.
"Rize, as soon as you finish eating, we're heading out, so get ready."
"Where are we going?"
"To the Reincarnator's base."
Just those casual words caused Rize to cough dramatically.
