"Rize, keep your chin up. This isn't going to be a walk in the park."
"──Yes!"
Rize responded with gusto and readied her shield once more.
Visibility was poor, the enemy's strength was unknown.
The situation was dire, but this was just another day at the office for Purge Knight.
And now, a powerful blow strikes Rize's shield.
But Rize completely anticipated the move and blocked it.
How could she achieve this feat in these terrible conditions?
The reason lay in the training Rai had given her.
It was combat training in a completely sealed, lightless basement.
Through that harsh training, Rize learned how to fight when her vision was blocked.
Even if something is unseen, if it is definitely alive, there will always be signs.
For example, a slight breath, the feeling of movement, a shift in the air, a faint footstep.
By combining these, she could form a clear vision in her mind, calculate and respond.
"Senior, now!"
"──Quick!"
The enemy's recovery from damage and the short time until their next attack.
It meant the enemy was unusually tough──no, that wasn't right.
In an instant, multiple presences moved within the fog.
"They're swarming us."
In the dark fog, multiple gazes pierce through Rai and the others.
Having been repelled twice, the enemy had grown wary.
"Senior"
"──It's time we take the initiative here."
If they didn't take the lead, they would be at a disadvantage.
That's why Rai chose to launch a counterattack.
"Alright, I'm going to throw my shield and run. Follow me at that moment."
"Understood."
"──Let's go!"
In an instant, Rai threw his shield with all his might towards where he thought the enemy was.
But the aim was scattered.
It wasn't a hit──the purpose of the throw wasn't to hit.
The goal was to confirm and reveal the enemy's location.
If it was a living being, even if it wasn't hit, if it sensed something moving towards it, it would have to dodge.
The reason for this move was to allow the opponent to make a deliberate move in order to pinpoint their location more accurately.
In fact, the enemy jumps back in time to meet the throw of the shield.
Guided by that faint sound, Rai dashes forward.
In an instant, he strikes at the pinpointed location.
But his attack slices through the air.
Yet, an unseen presence also moves to evade the attack.
"────There!"
Predicting the enemy's position after Rai's swordplay, Rize thrusts her spear.
'────!'
A muffled scream escapes as flesh is torn, the sensation transmitted from the spear's tip.
Just as she prepares to follow up────.
"Don't finish them off!"
Rai halts Rize.
At the same moment, the presences around them, including the one just attacked, rapidly recede.
The presence vanishes completely, and the night fog that had obscured their vision dissipates.
"Senior, why did you stop me? We could have taken at least one of them out!"
Rize raises her voice in surprise, but Rai remains calm.
"Rize, don't misunderstand. Our goal isn't to take out those low-level guys."
Saying this, Rai points at the ground.
There, a trail of red blood dots continues.
"────Let's follow it, all the way to the big boss."
