Volume 1 Chapter 17 ACT.15 The Heretical Cult (I)

Purge Knight Rai Conwell swings his sword.

In an instant, the head of the old man clad in Lowe falls to the ground.

And then, a scream echoes through the dim cave.

The shadows, seemingly understanding the situation, all flee deeper into the cave.

 "NO! PLEASE, FORGIVE US!"

"Oh, God of Truth and Chaos! SAVE US—!!"

 They ran.

Shadows in human form, stumbling over each other in the dark as they fled deeper into the cave.

 Rai Conwell didn't hesitate.

 He swung his blade once.

 Then again.

 And again.

 Each stroke was precise.

 Clean.

 Final.

The Purge Knight cut them down as he caught up, their cries choking off into wet gurgles.

 He slashed.

 Relentless.

 He slashed.

 No mercy.

 He slashed.

Until there was no one left to run.

The cave stank of blood. Thick and cloying.

 The stone walls wept red.

"──Even if they are heretics, the massacre leaves a bad taste."

Yet, saying that, Rai advances further into the depths to fulfill his duty, his mission.

* * *

"──The Cult of Chaos, is it?"

"Yes, this time the Reincarnator is in a hidden cult of heretics, where the divine oracle has descended."

In the garden where a refreshing breeze blows, the saint said this nonchalantly.

The cult recognized as heretical by the Holy Church is the Cult of Chaos, which worships the [God of Truth and Chaos] that was banished in myth.

"With this oracle, we also discovered the hidden lair of the heretics, killing 2 birds with one stone. Could you eradicate them while you're at it?"

Saying this, the saint sips her tea with delight.

 Rai said nothing to that.

 He didn't need to.

For a Purge Knight, orders were orders.

Three years of this work had dulled the edge of doubt.

 Hesitation? That didn't exist.

 Heretics were evil.

 And the Cult of Chaos?

They worshipped the Reincarnator. That was enough.

 His mind drifted.

 Ten years ago.

 The Aldra Rebellion.

The church had backed Reincarnator Aldra until it all came crashing down.

 Rai hadn't forgotten.

He'd learned then how quickly things could change.

"I don't know the scale of it, but I might not be able to kill them all by myself. Can someone, anyone, accompany me?"

It's understandable that Rai would say such a thing.

It's not a matter of skill, but rather a matter of numbers.

Without attacking from both the front and the back, it's simply impossible to achieve at least minimal annihilation.

"Yes, that was my intention from the start. After all, this time the Reincarnator is not alone."

 "Is that so?"

 "Indeed."

The saint nodded while quietly revealing the number.

 "Seven."

 "──!?"

Upon hearing that number, Rai was rendered speechless.

Never before had he purged that many Reincarnators at once.

No, in fact, it isn't even recorded in the Holy Church's documents.

The saint answered casually, as if it were nothing remarkable.

"That's precisely why I chose someone who would be the best match for you as your partner this time."

"What do you mean by that?"

Just as Rai was about to press for an answer, a third voice sounded in the garden that had only 2 people.

 "──Pardon my intrusion."

The voice belonged to an unexpected person, echoing the metallic sound unique to armor as they appeared.

"Purge Knight, rank 4, Aslan Aldabaran. I have arrived in response to the summons──"

 "──Master."

The one who appeared was Rai's master, Aslan.

After 3 years, their reunion was truly a momentous occasion.
