Volume 1 Chapter 11 ACT.10 The Reincarnator of the Wolf Beast (I)
That day was destined to be a pivotal moment for Rai Conwell.
In the early morning, as the sun had yet to fully break through the morning mist, I walked the familiar path to the Holy Church headquarters, a route I had taken countless times.
However, the tension made the scenery appear different.
My beloved sword and shield, along with my armor, felt unusually heavy in my pack.
"I never imagined it would come to this."
I hadn't expected to face this trial right after declaring to my master that I aimed to become a Purge Knight.
As my master had said, I had planned to become a Holy Knight at 15, then hone my skills further, aiming for my late twenties to early thirties.
I never thought I would have to face it so soon; my mind was a mix of confusion and anxiety rather than joy.
Would I really be able to pass?
Could I even handle this?
With those worries weighing on me, I arrived at the designated location indicated by the messenger──the front of the Holy Church headquarters.
There, I saw a single cart and a young man who appeared to be the driver.
The figure of the Purge Knight, who was supposed to oversee this trial, was nowhere to be seen.
So, I decided to approach the young man at the back of the cart, who seemed to be doing something.
It was then that it happened.
"TOU!!"
Suddenly, I heard that shout, and something leaped out from the cart.
"Huh, wait!?"
What burst forth was a woman in her mid-twenties with chestnut hair, looking quite attractive.
For some reason, she was beaming with a wide smile and diving toward me with all her might.
It was so sudden and unexpected that I couldn't even think to dodge.
As a result, I ended up catching her──and she embraced me tightly with a triumphant look on her face.
"Ah, so cute! What a perfect, beautiful boy!!"
I was enveloped in her embrace, getting tossed around, and she was breathing heavily──well, a lot happened.
Unfortunately, the young boy Rai, who had spent the last 5 years training, lacked any immunity against women.
As a result, he could only freeze up, his face flushed crimson, and that reaction only seemed to tickle her fancy, prompting her to emit a cheerful shriek.
Just when Rai felt as if he might faint from the embarrassment or whether it was an unexpected perk, he was unexpectedly saved by the young coachman.
"──Hey, enough of this, Leone!"
"Guh!"
The young coachman unsheathed the sword from his waist and brought it down with a *THWACK* upon the woman's head.
She took the blow squarely, letting out a croaky sound like a squashed toad as she curled up, cradling her head.
The young man sighed and turned to face the still-frozen Rai.
"Sorry about that, kid. She didn't mean any harm──can you tell?"
"Y-yes."
"Well, anyway, sorry for the strange welcome."
Stunned by his apology, Rai felt an unexpected wave of guilt wash over him.
The young man sheathed his sword again and extended a hand towards Rai.
Rai grabbed that hand, and they exchanged a firm handshake.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Rai Conwell. It's a pleasure."
"I'm Alfonso. ──Third in rank of the Purge Knights, Alfonso Gladstone."
"What!?"
At those words, a jolt of electricity ran down Rai's spine.
He was face to face with a Purge Knight for the first time──one whose rank was even higher than his master, Aslan.
For Rai, the strongest person he had ever met up until now was his master.
In fact, he had yet to win even a single mock battle.
The fact that the young man before him was of a higher rank than his master──meaning he was stronger──struck him like a thunderbolt.
"Don't be so tense; I'm just here as the coachman this time. I have no right to interfere with you. If anything, she's the one who should be nervous."
With that, Alfonso pointed at the woman still curled up on the ground.
"You should at least greet him."
"Ugh, I know that already!"
Grumbling under her breath, the woman finally stood up.
Taking a fresh look at the woman, I realized she had a cute and charming face.
Tall and with neatly trimmed chestnut hair that exuded cleanliness, Rai felt a slight flutter of excitement, as was fitting for his age.
"Yes, nice to meet you, Rai! I'm Leone Godwin, ranked fifth in sequence, and I'll be in charge of determining your acceptance today. Looking forward to working with you!"
Upon hearing those words, a hint of unease crept into Rai's heart.
