Volume 2 Chapter 45 The Aim Was Unchanged, But...
"Lene, do you have any idea what time it is?"
"Uh... it's just before 12."
"I see... I thought more time had passed, but I guess not. I'm starving."
'Hey, you two, where's the tension? I'm over here doing my best to dodge!'
I wondered how many hours we had been in this back-and-forth struggle, but it seemed that the fiery bursts and flames from Flamme weren't to her liking.
She's really furious.
That said, I wasn't just sitting idly by either.
Thanks to my careful observation, I was beginning to understand the mother dragon's attack patterns.
"Once I figure out the patterns, it's easier to set my sights. Lene, Flamme, it's time to switch to offense. I'll explain the plan."
"The plan... you say?"
'What does that mean?'
Unable to comprehend my intention, Lene, still facing away, tilted her head, and Flamme cleverly twisted her large neck sideways.
They belong to completely different species, but their reactions are sisterly.
"Right, while showing the belly to Flamme's mother, it's a method that makes aiming easier."
With that, I explained the flow of the attack to the two of them.
Lene's cooperation is essential for this strategy.
"...I see, I understand now."
'Hey..., Lene, this is dangerous, okay? Are you sure about this?'
Flamme looked shocked.
Well, that's understandable.
In this plan, Lene will take the front line first.
"Hehe, I'm trusting Mr. Ryuuji."
'I see, so this is what they call a weakness from love?'
"Wh-where did you learn such a phrase?"
...It seems Lene blushed, turning as red as a fire dragon from Flamme's teasing.
What's she up to?
"If you're on board, let's get started. I want to get back and grab some food."
'That's why I'm not nervous, Ryuuji...'
She might be thinking that Flamme wants to change this situation.
Still, she's awfully calm considering she's fighting her mother.
Maybe she just thinks differently than other people.
'Well, I'm going, are you ready?'
"I'm good."
"Anytime."
After waiting for Lene and I to react, Flamme took a distance from her mother dragon, as I said.
It was probably about 50 meters.
Now, thanks to the distance, the mother dragon came after us, as expected.
As a full-grown dragon, her daughter can't match her speed, but Flamme has been able to escape because she's agile.
This is a bad situation for her, as it's a simple chase based on speed.
Regardless, Flamme made an emergency stop and spun around to face the mother dragon.
If she doesn't do this and the mother dragon charges, Flamme, Lene and I are done for.
But she's not going to be killed without a fight.
Lene pointed her Alchemist's Gun in the front, holding two of them in each hand.
"I'm not used to shooting with 2 guns, but I think I can aim well with this."
Right after Lene said that with a happy smile, 2 BANG!
sounds rang out.
She couldn't aim for the Magic Core from the front.
We were aiming for...
"GROARRRR!"
The mother dragon, with both eyes pierced by bullets, roared.
At the same time, her bodies dropped sharply.
Flamme adjusted the Magic Power of her wings to make us fall.
Naturally, the mother dragon, blinded, charged straight ahead.
So we'd be looking up at it from below.
"......This is it!"
I set my sights on the chest of the mother dragon that brushed past overhead and pulled the trigger.
With a loud bang, the bullet shot out and accurately struck the target.
I thought I heard a small 'thud.'
It sounded like a Magic Core.
"Looks like... I did it."
The mother dragon began to descend slowly, maintaining her stance.
And then she fell straight into the saltwater lake.
A monster with its Magic Core destroyed is destined to die.
There's no way it could be alive now──
"...No way, man."
"Huh, what's happening──"
The look on Lene's face, as she turned to my broken words, froze in despair.
She had seen it too, just like I had.
'Ryuuji, did you mess up?'
Flamme, unable to turn around, asked curiously, but then she spun around and understood the situation, falling silent as well.
There, hovering near the water's surface of the saltwater lake, was the mother dragon, wreathed in flames, her spikes gleaming, glaring at us with her already regenerated eyes.
