Volume 2 Chapter 42 Interlude: Adiliana's Arrow

*This is from a third-person perspective.*

 <hr>

 "This is impossible! Absolutely impossible!"

Dark Mage Adiliana was riding her golden dragon, heading south towards Sartzstadt while muttering to herself in frustration.

Despite having everything prepared and even a dragon on standby, all the stampede monsters Adiliana had summoned had been wiped out.

The only piece left to her was this dragon, which she had risked her life to acquire.

"Come on, pick up the speed!"

Adiliana commanded the dragon under her control, but it only let out a groan and did not increase its speed.

What she didn't know was that the bullets fired from Ryuuji's Alchemist's Gun had damaged the Magic Core.

The Magic Core was the heart of a monster, and if it got hurt, no matter how powerful the dragon was, it wouldn't come out unscathed.

"Even though it's just a child, to obliterate a dragon in an instant and pierce its scales with an unknown weapon... How far will that man go to hinder us! At this rate, I won't have the face to meet Lady Emerada!"

Lene's sister, Emerada, was someone that Adiliana feared even more than the Evil God Abnella.

Adiliana was very afraid of failing to fulfill the direct orders she received from someone like her.

"So, at the very least... let's turn Sartzstadt into a sea of flames! I can't allow myself to tire before that!"

Adiliana, who had been scolding the powerless dragon, became concerned about the movements of the Knight Order and the dreaded enchanters behind her, and turned to check the ground.

Since the fire breath could only be used after dismounting the dragon, it would be problematic if the Knight Order arrived first and attacked in such an unguarded state.

"...Huh? What do you mean by that...?"

Unable to comprehend the situation, Adiliana doubted whether what she was seeing was an illusion, blinking her eyes in disbelief.

However, the scenery reflected before her did not change.

In the place where Adiliana had been just earlier, there was indeed the form of the young dragon she had brought along.

According to her memory, it had been said to have been obliterated.

And strangely enough, Ryuuji, who was at her feet, was making hand gestures as if communicating with the young dragon.

The young dragon, appearing to have received some information from Ryuuji, roared fiercely... or so it seemed to Adiliana.

A moment later, the distant roar of a large beast reached her ears.

The feelings contained in that voice were understandable even to a Dark Mage who seemed to have forgotten human emotions.

 The young dragon was furious.

"...Could it be that you are saying he has released that young dragon from my control and are trying to communicate with it!?"

In Adiliana's mind, the conclusion that could be drawn from that immediately led to a pale expression on her face.

In other words, there's a possibility that that enchanter will come riding on a dragon.

If the absolute advantage of flying was taken away, even with mighty power, that wounded magic dragon would struggle against Adiliana.

 "...But, at the very least──Sartzstadt!"

Adiliana turned her gaze back towards the direction the magic dragon was heading.

The harbor town was closing in fast.

All that was left was to descend in the town center, and after Adiliana dismounted, the dragon would unleash its fiery breath.

 "With this, I win──"

However, as Adiliana muttered that, she looked down at the ground where Ryuuji and the others were, and her words trailed off.

 "...Not there?"

The scene Adiliana had envisioned was of enchanter Ryuuji taking off on the back of the baby dragon, heading this way.

But there was neither the baby dragon nor Ryuuji in sight.

"Could it be, it was really just an illusion...?"

Just after Adiliana tilted her head in confusion, the magic dragon she was riding came to an abrupt halt in midair.

Almost injuring her neck, Adiliana let out a soundless scream.

 "...Hey! Why did you stop...?"

Even as she protested, Adiliana quickly understood why the dragon had come to a sudden halt.

 "...W-wait, that's impossible..., it's too fast..."

Again, an unbelievable sight unfolded before her eyes, and Adiliana managed to squeeze out her voice amidst her despair.

In the direction of Sartzstadt, meaning directly ahead from the dragon's perspective at the same altitude, Lene and Ryuuji, riding the baby dragon, were lying in wait.

"Hey, Adiliana. Thanks to your slow progress, I was able to catch up easily."

Ryuuji, clinging to Lene from behind as she rode the baby dragon, flashed a defiant grin at Adiliana while aiming the Alchemist's Gun.
