Volume 2 Chapter 4 It Seems That Impossible Phenomena Are Happening There.

The next day, Lene and I were visiting the merchant guild in Sartzstadt.

We were there to discuss the delivery of magic stones and medicine, as well as the purchase of rental properties.

We'd been thinking about restructuring our production system for a while because we weren't producing enough to meet the number of requests.

The request from His Excellency Duke Hoffman was perfect timing, you could say.

When it comes to buying property, they might try to take advantage of us, but we'll have to play it cool.

I don't really want to do it, but I'm planning on mentioning our achievements in Sartzstadt related to the restoration of the Bern mine and the port.

That said, they're merchants, so they're probably ten steps ahead of us, if not more, so it might not even do any good.

"...Huh? Is Mr. Thor... having some kind of argument over there?"

There's a Lynx girl, going on and on at Mr. Thor at the reception desk.

She has short, orange, curly hair, and she looks to be about the same age as Minori, maybe 16.

She seems excited, and her ears are perked up.

"No, from what I can hear, it doesn't sound like an argument. It seems like the Lynx woman is asking for help."

Lene, sounding certain, told me that.

As expected of an elf, she can clearly understand what they're saying, even from ten meters away.

"That's why! I want you to lend your expertise to my village to create the rumored field in Sartzstadt!"

 ......Huh?

We approached, and the content that reached our ears made us both stop in our tracks.

And then we looked at each other.

 "...Mr. Ryuuji, the rumored field...?"

"Don't say another word, Lene. It's definitely that field."

Ever since we planted the Magic Stone of Peul, we've been able to harvest vegetables every single day right in front of our eyes in that field, absolutely.

By the way, that field has an Iron Golem standing guard over the magic stone now, after it was previously destroyed by a Mud Golem at the hands of Guy.

We did spend a bit of money to get the iron ready, but even a Second Rank adventurer isn't able to easily destroy it these days.

If the magic stone gets stolen, that field is done for.

 "Um..."

"Ah! Mr. Ryuuji and Ms. Lene! What a coincidence!"

Lene hesitantly approached and spoke up, and Mr. Thor, who had stood up as if to ask for help, said, "What a coincidence," to us.

I need to somehow manage this situation.

"Now, now, Mr. Thor, it's a bit of a problem for you to be asking us for help."

"Handle this! This customer, even if we tell them that field is one-of-a-kind and cannot be replicated, they might not understand!"

"Still, it's the responsibility of the merchant guild's staff to explain things to the customer. Even if I did create that field, isn't it a bit off for us to be the ones explaining it?"

 "Ugh..."

Mr. Thor, who had been struck a painful blow, trails off and can't continue his sentence.

Sure, I'm the one who made it, but the responsibility for managing and operating the field lies with Lana and the merchant guild.

It's a bit much to be asking me for all that.

"Huh? This guy made that field?"

 Ah, crap.

The cat-girl seems to have shifted her target to me.

It feels like responsibility has nothing to do with it.

 Lene sighs, "Ahh, ahh."

 I messed up.

 I was careless.

"...Just so you know, what Mr. Thor explained is true. That field can't be recreated."

I preemptively shut down the girl's request.

I figured they probably wanted me to share in the harvest, but there's nothing I can do.

 "Please, help us out!"

"Impossible. Can't do it. It's just not gonna happen."

 "C-cold..."

After I brushed her off, the girl's mouth twitched and she recoiled, but she still seemed to have some fight left in her as she shook her head and looked back at me.

 She's got guts, I'll give her that──

"I've told you, it's not possible, no matter how many times you ask. And I'm not going to tell you how to do it, because even if I did, it wouldn't work. It can't be replicated."

 "E-even so, I can't go back empty-handed!"

 Hmm, she's persistent.

I can see why Mr. Thor gave up.

But it's not a problem I can solve.

I wish she'd clear out already.

"Our village is in a terrible state because of the famine! We have to figure out the secret of the fields somehow!"

 "...Famine?"

Those words gave me pause, and I glanced over at Mr. Thor.

The official in charge shook his head.

"There's been no information about famine in any of the regions, at least in the Marquis Reichner territory this year... Apparently, a famine has occurred in a place called Katteru Village, in the Marquis Strauss territory."

 "...Marquis Strauss territory, huh..."

I doubt it, but could it have something to do with the monsters becoming active?

But I'm not supposed to talk about that.

Still, I can't rule it out.

There's a chance the monsters are draining some kind of power.

 "I see..."

 "So, you'll teach us!?"

"Nope. Not even a little bit."

As I steered the girl who was yelling, "Stop with those suggestive gestures!" after tripping over her own feet, I realized something.

This is the realm of adventurers, I thought.
