Volume 2 Chapter 39 Did the Situation Improve Thanks to the Reinforcements?

 The developments thereafter unfolded rapidly.

Unlike the soldiers who had reached their peak of exhaustion, the knights who had rushed from the royal capital as reinforcements were accustomed to such measures, and even against ogres, they efficiently took them down in a many-to-one scenario.

Additionally, Lene's activism was striking; with her potent poison, she took down large species, and with the healing potion that came with origami, she was reviving the heavily wounded soldiers in one go.

"Ah, that wound just sealed up...!? What is this effect!?"

"I'm glad we got help. ...If only we could bring back the fallen, but such a medicine does not exist..."

"There's no helping the dead. Medicine that goes against the ethics of life, that's a no-go."

A female soldier who had been praising the medicine was encouraging Lene, who was disheartened by the lives she couldn't save.

Lene has done her part plenty enough.

"The wound seems sealed, but I think the physical fatigue still remains. Let's leave this to the knights."

"Indeed. ...Who would've thought, reinforcements from the distant royal capital would arrive. Does this mean they were seriously eyeing the danger of this Stampede?"

When suggesting a break to the squad leader, he was clutching at the life he had barely saved, his hand on his chest.

It was truly a moment of collapse, just one step away.

"What about the other defense teams?"

"Reinforcements have been sent to them as well. Let's take a breather and regroup our forces."

My worries seemed to be needless; the platoon leader had already sent out a messenger to confirm the situation.

 Good.

Even if we hold our ground here, if the rear collapses, they'll overrun the town.

Eventually, the situation turned around, and the Goblins, judging that defeat was imminent, began to retreat.

These guys are nocturnal, so they're probably planning to hide somewhere else under the cover of night.

"Pursue them! But don't go too deep! Always form groups of 3 or more!"

When the knight squad's platoon leader gave the order, the well-coordinated knights quickly formed multiple squads and went after them in teams of about 3.

The remaining troops continued with the defense.

"...Finally, things are starting to calm down."

 "Looks like it. Good job."

Lene looked down at me as I plopped down and gave me a pat on the back.

 It wasn't just the knights.

I think she saved a lot of lives too.

 "...Hey, Lene──"

"Mr. Ryuuji, let's talk about everything when we get back, okay?"

Lene cut me off with a smile that brooked no argument.

...Seriously, she's gentle, but I'm totally henpecked by this elf.

 "Leneee! It's Lene! You came!"

Just as I was starting to feel a little down, Minori came running over.

The caked-on blood had already turned a dark, gruesome color.

 But she's energetic.

 After all that running around.

"Whoa! Minori, hold up! Don't get all bloody on me! You'll get me dirty!"

 "How mean!"

"Not mean, it's just the way it is."

Minori, reeling from Lene's rejection, was dealt another blow as Suzu, who had somehow crept up behind me, struck.

Though she specializes in defensive and long-range magic, leaving no blood on her, even the ever-stoic youngest sister showed signs of fatigue.

"You 3 did well. We need to get a hefty reward from His Excellency to make it worth our while."

"Indeed. Besides taking care of the house, we need that extra reward."

Lene and Suzu nodded in agreement with Minori and me.

 Don't call us greedy.

 We're fighting for our lives.

We deserve some good fortune to make it worthwhile.

"...But there's still work to be done. Adiliana hasn't shown up."

Lene muttered that while staring at the sky, which had turned white without us noticing.

Now that she mentions it, we haven't she really come?

"Will she come? I do think this stampede was her doing, though."

"Yes, she will come. I can feel it."

 Lene is convinced.

 And it's not just her.

Are my sisters thinking the same, staring north with serious expressions?

 Naturally, I follow their gaze.

 "......Huh? What's that?"

At that moment, I spotted something glowing in the northern sky and called out.

It's still far away, but something seems to be floating in the air.

"Grant me the power to see far across the skies,〈Telescope〉"

Suzu, having spotted it too, used her far-sight magic to glare at the northern sky for confirmation.

 "......That... is..."

 "...What happened?"

Staring blankly at the northern sky, I sensed something was off when I heard Suzu's strained voice.

When I called out to her, the usually unflappable Suzu shook and grabbed my hand tightly.

 What on earth happened?

 "...a dragon."

 "......Seriously?"

I realized the gravity of the situation from her one word, and my voice became hoarse.
