Volume 2 Chapter 30 Slip Through the Arm and Run
The arm swung down with a raised fist.
An invisible shockwave struck me and the soldiers in front.
Their large shield fulfilled its duty, firmly keeping them in place.
But my shield was──
"...Alright, it worked."
"W-What worked?"
"Here, this."
I handed the magic stone I activated earlier to Lene, who was huddled in the back.
The faint glow of the magic stone began to fade as it separated from its owner, who provided it with magic power, but now Lene would be able to use it by giving her own magic power.
"What's this...?"
"This is the other〈Great Magic Stone of Diamond〉I made as a backup before delivering to His Excellency. This will prevent the invisible attacks. So, a shield isn't necessary."
"Oh...!"
Lene's eyes widened as if to say, "I see that now."
Even though she had readied the large shield as insurance, the magic stone's effect completely nullified the shockwave.
"So, I'll go help the soldiers lying around...although 'lying around' sounds strange, you know, over in that area."
"Um, wouldn't it be better for Mr. Ryuuji to hold the magic stone?"
"Well, I could also have Lene hide behind the soldier with the large shield, but really, it's better for Lene to stay in a position where she can attack〈the Arm〉head-on. With the〈Great Magic Stone of Diamond〉, that's possible."
"That's true, but..."
To reassure the worried Lene, I gently wrapped her hand, which was gripping the magic stone, with both of mine.
"Don't worry, I'll be back before you know it."
"...I understand."
Although Lene looked a bit displeased, she blushed and nodded.
It's not just for my sisters; I can't easily die for Lene either.
"Your Excellency, is it alright? I'll go help those soldiers who were manipulated."
After putting down my staff and magic bag to lighten my load, I called out to Your Excellency, who was locked in a stare with his arm, and finally, he turned his head slightly towards me.
We need to coordinate; otherwise, things could go south.
"Um, is Lene really okay without defending against long-range attacks?"
Given that she doesn't seem worried about me at all, I guess it's safe to say she trusts me.
...I suppose that's true.
"Yes, I realized that we could block that long-range attack with the Great Magic Stone of Diamond, so I had her hold it."
"Oh, so it could be blocked with that magic stone. In that case, you can use the one I have."
Your Excellency rummaged through the pouch tied to his armor and handed me the Great Magic Stone of Diamond that he had previously delivered.
"Wait, you had it all along?"
"Well, yes. I intended to use it when the stampede came south and I was at the front lines."
Ah, I see.
But to think that someone of Your Excellency's Duke stature would fight on the front lines of a stampede.
He's a true warrior, isn't he?
"If it's Ryuuji without his armor, rescuing him should be easy. I'm counting on you."
"Understood. I'll be on my way."
After saluting him, I unleashed the enhanced burst of speed granted by the <Magic Stone of Powerful Arms> and dashed fiercely toward the fallen soldier.
By the way, since the <Magic Stone of Fyrel> is probably useless due to its power of <God Slayer>, I tossed it into the magic bag earlier.
Now, as for the <Arm>... it opened its palm toward me as I charged in, trying to grab me.
Of course, it would react.
But it's too late.
Trying to catch me with such a slow movement is downright laughable against my enhanced speed.
I shifted direction towards the wrist of the <Arm> to create confusion.
It made a movement that almost lost sight of me for a moment.
It seems like it doesn't have a full view of the area.
Perhaps the <Arm> has some kind of ocular organ somewhere.
I easily reached the soldier, lifting him by the back of his neck to prepare for our escape.
Now, as for the <Arm>──
"Mr. Ryuuji! Watch out!"
Turning at Lene's voice, I saw the <Arm> raising its palm high into the air.
Is it planning to crush me along with the soldier, like swatting a fly?
"Aim for the joints!"
But Your Excellency and the subordinates were not going to stay silent about that.
While I was in danger, Your Excellency and the soldiers, who had drawn near the <Arm>, began a fierce onslaught with swords and spears, targeting the tendons on the inner side of the elbow connecting the upper and lower arms.
"Air that flows, turn into blades and strike the enemy. <Air Cutter>!"
The wind magic unleashed from Lene's staff veered around the aggressively attacking soldiers, accurately slicing through the <Arm>'s tendons.
Instead of blood, some kind of noxious vapor erupted.
Unable to hold on any longer, the forearm lost strength, and I slowly began to topple over.
In that moment, I quickly hoisted the soldier and rushed back.
This completes the first mission!
