Volume 2 Chapter 28 Something Was Happening at the Training Grounds
After parting ways with Lord Reichner, I wandered through the market, picking up other necessities.
Thanks to that, both Lene and I ended up with our magic bags filled to the brim.
"The next trade ship is scheduled to arrive in about half a month, right?"
"Well, even though it's a neighboring country, Growthmont is quite a distance away. That ship must take several days to sail."
As we walked back home, Lene and I discussed the future of our overseas trade.
I've heard that the capital of the Goldmont Kingdom, Growthmont, is also a port town and boasts a large fleet.
If the port of Sartzstadt continues to expand, it's bound to become an important trading partner.
In that case, the chances of obtaining valuable materials would be quite high.
"Well, for now, let's focus on creating the items we were commissioned to make. We need to prepare for Standpeed."
What we can do is support the soldiers who will face Standpeed.
Lene's healing potions and my Magic Stone of Diamond should be more than enough to help.
"Yeah, that's true... but..."
"...is something wrong?"
Sensing something unusual in Lene's anxious demeanor, I stopped and turned to her with a question.
"Yes. If Standpeed were to advance southward, do you think our troops would be able to stop them?"
"That's... well, isn't that why we have so many soldiers?"
I understood Lene's unease, but... there are skilled soldiers as well as those who are not.
But even if it's a mix of the good and the bad, it's still an army.
Many of them have faced monsters before and have experienced their own battles.
I tried to explain, but Lene shook her head.
It seemed my answer wasn't what she had hoped for.
"That's not it, Mr. Ryuuji. While there are those who are accustomed to fighting ordinary monsters, this time... there's a possibility that the Dark Mage is leading the stampede. If that's the case..."
"...the monsters might be enhanced by the Demon Crystal."
"Exactly."
It seemed I was right this time.
Lene nodded.
I see, if that golden monster appears, it would be an extreme hassle.
After all, magic would hardly be effective, and it possesses regeneration abilities.
In that case, the only effective attacks would be explosives like the ones Lene has.
"...Should we prepare some explosives as well?"
"Well, that's one option, but we should probably consider other strategies too. Maybe we should consult His Excellency Duke Hoffman during the next delivery."
Without reaching a conclusion at that moment, we arrived home and began our respective tasks.
* * *
After teaching Belle the job and finishing the requested items, we found ourselves visiting the military encampment attached to the lord's mansion for delivery once again, 7 days later.
"...It seems quite chaotic here."
"It does, doesn't it...? Eek!?"
"Oh, I'm so sorry!"
As I walked down the hallway, Lene almost collided with a soldier rushing towards us, so I quickly pulled her to the side to avoid the impact.
The young soldier, perhaps recognizing us for having caught His Excellency Duke Hoffman's sword, apologized profusely before moving on.
"The entire facility seems to be in quite a flurry. Is something going on?"
"I don't know either."
I asked the soldier guiding us, but he seemed clueless.
Well, can't be helped.
Maybe His Excellency would enlighten us.
With that thought, I visited the room of the Captain of the Royal Guard, His Excellency Duke Hoffman, but he was absent.
"Huh? The Captain should be here at this hour... Could he have been called away for an emergency...?"
The guide seemed puzzled.
He should be here according to the schedule, but he seemed to be out of the loop.
"Could he be at the training ground...? But that's odd. I would expect the deputy to be left behind in such cases... I'll check it out."
"Ah, we'll come along too."
Staying here without the guide might lead to us being treated as suspicious individuals.
After all, we did become somewhat famous because of the〈Great Magic Stone of Diamond〉incident.
We followed the guide and made our way to the training ground.
As usual, the corridors were bustling with soldiers hurrying back and forth.
It seems like something really did happen.
"...Huh?"
As we approached the training ground, Lene noticed something and perked up her ears.
It seemed like there was something only she, an elf, could hear.
"...This is... someone fighting...? The location is the training ground, but it's not training, there are injured people too...?"
Her murmur contained words that caught my attention.
What did she mean by "it's not training"?
And when the guide opened the door leading to the training ground, I understood what was going on.
