Volume 1 Chapter 25 The Golden Beast Goes Berserk
"Shh!"
Right after Mr. Dietrich was attacked by the golden bear, Minori shot out at sonic speed, slashing its thick right foreleg with her 2 Magic Swords, <Pierce> and <Resist>.
The Magic Swords boasted a cutting edge worthy of their ancient names.
...But, the right foreleg that should have been cleaved cleanly bore only a slight wound.
No way, right?
That was a slash from Minori, who even had <Powerful Arm> bestowed upon her!
"Tch! What the hell is this? It's tough!"
Clicking her tongue, Minori moved behind the golden bear and aimed for its neck with a swift strike.
However, with a dull sound, it was thwarted, and she couldn't inflict even a single scratch on the bear's neck.
"Lady Cecil, fall back with Lene! This bear isn't normal! It's a demon beast!"
I'm saying that, I distanced myself from the cart and readied my staff.
I could clearly sense strong Magic Power emanating from this bear.
A normal beast shouldn't have such a presence.
That indicates it had transformed into a monster──a demon beast.
"Minori, be careful! That bear is regenerating its wounds!"
"Huh!?"
At Lene's words, Minori turned her gaze to the golden bear's right foreleg, her eyes widening in disbelief.
Indeed, the visible wound on the bear's right foreleg showed no traces of damage at all.
As for the golden bear, it let out a roar, seemingly unbothered by Minori's attack, and swung its sharp claws down at Mr. Dietrich.
The sheer force made it seem like <Absolute> was ineffective, as a dull sound echoed from the shield.
"Mana, gather to me and pierce that bear! *Lightning*!"
"Flames, become an arrow and blaze upon that bear's face! *Fire Arrow*!"
A streak of lightning struck the bear square in the chest, while a flaming arrow hit its face and erupted into flames.
The lightning was from Lene, but surprisingly, the fire arrow had come from Lady Cecil.
Even as a princess, it seemed she knew how to defend herself.
However, the lightning had no effect at all, and with a mere shake of its head, the golden bear extinguished the flames.
Normally, the fire should have lasted at least five seconds...
"So it has some kind of magical defense mechanism too. Minori, fall back! I'm applying *Sharpness*!"
"Got it!"
Following my command, Minori took a wide detour to stay out of the bear's attack range before swiftly returning to us.
I had no idea how effective it would be against that thing, but I had to enhance her weapon with a temporary *Sharpness* enchantment on her magic sword.
"Ghh...! The shield won't hold!"
Even for a knight's greatshield, blocking the massive bear's attacks was proving too much—Mr. Dietrich let out something close to a scream.
If his shield broke here, our formation would collapse completely.
Having finished the temporary enhancement on Minori, I placed my hand on the back of the knight desperately holding the line.
"In the name of Ryuuji, I grant this one the power to restore all that he holds! *Repair*! ...I've temporarily reversed time on your shield and armor to restore them! It'll wear off after a while, but please hold out just a bit longer!"
"Much obliged!"
This is also a temporary buff, and while the shield that takes too much damage will eventually break, Mr. Dietrich can still hold on since his durability has been partially restored.
While I'm casting the buff on Mr. Dietrich, Minori targets the right front leg of the golden bear again and aims to slice it this time.
...However, surprisingly, it regenerated in an instant.
"No way!?"
Minori lets out a shout in shock.
I can't believe what's happening in front of me, but it's a fact I have to accept.
But this time, the golden bear seemed to sense Minori as a threat and turned to swing its left front leg at her.
In a panic, Minori stepped back to dodge it.
"Minori! Aim for its hind leg!"
"Got it!"
It seems like it's trying to make sure it can't stand properly.
Responding to Lene's request, Minori slashed down diagonally with her right hand's <Pierce>, slicing through the golden bear's left hind leg.
The bear loses its balance.
"Mr. Dietrich, get back!"
Just then, as if perfectly timed, Lene threw a vial filled with liquid at the golden bear.
Right after, the golden bear's body ignited with a deafening roar.
It must be the explosives I buffed with <Whirlwind> earlier.
Still, it's a tremendous amount of firepower, flames rising high enough to scorch the heavens.
Even Suzu's magic wouldn't match this.
"W-What on earth is this power!?"
Ah, Mr. Dietrich looks terrified.
It seems even the royal knight is shaken by this power.
Did I overdo it?
The golden bear covered in raging flames writhes in agony.
Even with its strong regeneration ability, being set on fire hampers that ability.
Eventually, the blazing flames died down, but the golden bear's body was charred all over, showing no signs of recovery.
However, the bear continued to thrash its claws around wildly, foam bubbling from its mouth.
We're keeping our distance, and it hasn't realized we're out of claw range, probably because its eyes and nose are burned, leaving it unaware of its surroundings.
But if it can't see, it's a good opportunity.
"This will finish it! Die!"
As the bear turned our way, I aimed for the moment and threw a magic stone infused with Magic Power that I had taken from my pocket.
Immediately, there was a loud "boom" as the magic stone exploded, gooey yellow slime sticking to the bear's face.
"What is this... slime!?"
Just as Mr. Dietrich exclaimed, this was no ordinary goo; it was a slime, indeed.
I had sealed the slime I found in the dungeon into the <Magic Stone of Sealing>.
The slime clung to the golden bear's face, gradually disrupting its regeneration ability by melting its head.
The bear desperately tried to scrape it off, but there was no way it could succeed.
While the slime has the property of dissolving whatever it sticks to, it's a highly effective means of attack against monsters that are immune to weapons and magic.
As the stench of melting flesh filled the air, the golden bear thrashed its massive body, struggling, but eventually its brain was melted away, causing it to collapse and become completely still.
