Volume 6 Chapter 37 The Climax of the Fire is Basically Here.
Randy followed leading Catherine and arrived at the edge of the cliff, where he was greeted by the vast expanse of the sea and the endless cliffs.
"Oh, I see something small and man-made over there."
In the distance to the left, beyond a sharply curved cliff, the faint outline of a coastline could be seen.
Randy points out a tower-like structure that seems to be there...
"I can't see it."
"Me neither."
Unfortunately, the other members can only make out the coastline at best.
"Oh, that black thing?"
"Yeah, that!"
Only Luke, who shielded his eyes with his left hand, claims to see it, while the others raise their eyebrows, still unable to see it.
"I believe it's the harbor of the southern Count's domain."
Randy, still gazing southward, was told by Cecilia that it's a different town in the southern Count's domain near Hartfield.
"I've heard there's a tall lighthouse at the harbor."
"Huh. So that's it."
Randy mumbles to himself, pondering over 2 things.
One is, of course, the possibility of the imperial army arriving from there.
The other is the travel destination that Luke and Cecilia mentioned at the start of spring break.
"We'll head out once this exploration is over, right?"
Randy turns around to find Luke nodding slightly with a distant look on his face.
It's understandable.
Randy hasn't told Cecilia, but this trip is about meeting the son of the Count who rules there, and it's a bit of a setup for her.
"Pull yourself together."
Randy swallows those words.
He'd like to blow the place up, but Luke is probably the one who understands that the most.
If it's Luke, he should be able to deepen his relationship with Cecilia and gain recognition from Count Hartfield.
After reassuring himself with those thoughts, Randy shifts his gaze from the dilapidated tower in the distance, thinking, "That place will do for now."
"So, the way to the cave is..."
"Right here."
Catherine points with a nonchalant expression to a narrow, small path that leads downward.
It's a bit questionable whether they can truly call it a path, but its narrow, straight line suggests a human touch.
The entrance to the steep slope is just wide enough for a single person, almost blending into the cliffside.
Looking to the right or left, finding this narrow slope from the edge of the vast cliff seems like an impossible task.
"I can't believe there's a way down from a place like this..."
Cecilia muttered, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Is this really the lord's daughter?"
Randy tilted his head, and Cecilia explained that generally, people don't come close to this cliff.
The reason for that is quite simple.
"There's a giant bird's nest on this cliff."
A beast called An-Zoo, which is a giant bird, makes its nest here and attacks anyone who gets too close.
Apparently, An-Zoo is active mainly in the evenings, and if you disturb it, you might get attacked right on the cliff.
The footing is treacherous, and the opponent has the infinitely vast sky as their field.
If you get caught... you'll be dropped into the abyss below, becoming the giant bird's next meal.
"I see. So standing here is really..."
"Exactly. Big guy, it's your turn."
Even the top of the cliff has poor footing.
This slope is even worse.
Plus, it seems to go right through the area where the giant bird nests.
That's why Catherine pointed ahead with her chin, urging to take the lead.
"I'd like to refuse... but that does seem like the most efficient option."
With a sigh, Randy stepped onto the narrow path leading downward.
After some back and forth, it was clear that it was more convenient for Randy to take the lead.
However... Randy's face twisted in anxiety as he only had a vague idea of the nests being there.
"You don't mean all of those are nests, right?"
No wonder Randy was grimacing.
As he stepped onto the path and moved down along the cliff, he could see numerous holes in the rock face.
"Regrettably, that's the nest."
"It looks like a giant bird's condo..."
Randy couldn't help but grumble.
There were that many holes in the cliff.
Cecilia added that sadly, boats also avoid this area.
In other words, just passing through by boat could get you attacked, depending on the time of day.
The only saving grace is that the holes aren't that big.
Big enough for 2 people to stand side-by-side.
"They're too small to be giant birds," Randy thought, "but there are just way too many of them."
"Let's just hope we don't get attacked..."
Randy muttered as he started walking, and everyone followed.
Randy took the lead, followed by Liz, Catherine, and Cecilia.
Luke, Leon, and Livia were next, with Julius bringing up the rear.
"If we get hit from the side, we're toast, right?"
Randy was right; their stretched-out formation was hemmed in by cliffs on one side and the sea on the other, making it impossible to get reinforcements quickly.
