Volume 4 Chapter 27 The Safest Place in the World
"This is the entrance to the big pit."
I gestured toward the yawning chasm beside the tunnel. It looked like something straight out of a nightmare.
"I can feel miasma seeping out. This must be the source," I said, narrowing my eyes at the ominous glow. The air around the hole seemed to hum with danger.
"So, Chippy," I turned to her with a raised eyebrow, "are you really coming with us?"
Chippy hesitated for just a second, then nodded. Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"I have to find my dad!" she said, a determined glint in her eyes.
I crossed my arms and gave her a serious look.
"Okay, then promise me you won't leave my side. I'm not letting you wander off in the middle of this mess."
"Yes!" she exclaimed, her resolve clear.
"That's the spirit," I said, giving her a thumbs up.
"You're safe with your big brother," I added with a wink at Cino.
Cino gave me a knowing grin.
"Couldn't agree more. This is the safest place in the world... right?"
We both exchanged glances, and Chippy seemed to breathe a little easier.
"Well, let's go," I said, turning toward the pit and taking the first step into the darkness.
As we descended deeper, the darkness seemed to close in around us.
"Ugh, it's so dark... I can't see anything!" Chippy complained, squinting into the pitch-black void.
A strange, eerie wind howled through the tunnel, like the growl of some unseen beast.
"Brother, light the way!" Chippy said, suddenly sounding panicked.
Cino stepped up, raising his hand to cast a light spell, but it fizzled out before it could even form.
"The big pit even consumes light... great," he muttered.
"I see," I said, nodding. "Brother, please, your turn."
"Got it." I raised my right hand with a flourish, and the light from it exploded outward, illuminating the entire passage.
"Wooo... still amazing... your right hand, it's incredible," Chippy said, her voice filled with awe.
I grinned.
"Anything is possible with my right hand."
Suddenly, the air shifted, and I stiffened.
"Several Black Beasts are approaching. Chippy, Cino."
"Roger that!" Chippy and Cino moved forward, ready to fight.
Chippy blinked in confusion.
"Ah, um? How did you understand?"
"I read the flow of miasma with my hand," I said, casually.
Chippy's eyes sparkled with excitement.
"All right now—nanodesu... so amazing...!"
The Black Beasts charged toward us with snarls and claws outstretched. But before they could even get close, Cino and Chippy launched a flurry of magic and punches, each blow landing with precision.
"It looks like the Zeke grant magic is working," I observed, watching the beasts fall.
Chippy huffed, wiping her brow.
"You're a big brother who analyzes miasma and creates healing magic that neutralizes it. How do you do all that?"
I shrugged, nonchalantly.
"It's just... my thing. Alright, let's keep going."
