Volume 2 Chapter 68 At the Guild Master Room of the Shinjuku Gyoen Guild (II)

 ......Amamiya Value Technology Development Division

"Hey hey, you two! Welcome to my lair!"

Kisaragi-san's hyper-enthusiastic greeting echoed through the room.

Right now, Sakurako and I are in the 'Development Division' of Amamiya Value Technology's basement headquarters. Sakurako just called Kisaragi-san about the side effects of the 'Trans Potion,' and Kisaragi-san said, "I wanna show you something," and, well, here we are.

Kisaragi Kanna—head of the Development Division and a self-proclaimed 'genius scientist' famous worldwide. She's always bouncing off the walls. Geniuses, am I right?

"I'm sorry for calling you guys here."

"Oh, no problem. I cleared my schedule for today."

"Well, I don't really have anything else to do... I'm a student, so I have plenty of time."

 "That's good to hear."

Usually, Kisaragi-san's all over the place, but seeing her act considerate like this... for a second, I think she might actually be serious... but then I get cocky.

"Takeru-kun, I'd really like you to help out as an 'experimental subject'... oh wait, wrong term, 'collaborator.' How about it?"

 "I politely decline."

And then, with her usual wild grin and zero focus in her eyes, she walks right up to me, grabs my shoulder, and says that.

Wait a second, is this chick a Seeker? How did I let her get this close to me?

"We're done with the pleasantries. Let's get to the point."

Cue Sakurako's entrance, as usual, right when things were getting interesting.

Whenever the three of us get together, this happens: Kisaragi-san starts picking on me, and Sakurako jumps in to stop it. I mean, do we really need this routine?

"Yup, called you guys here today about the side effects of the Trans Potion we talked about on the phone, but actually, we've got some new discoveries too..."

 "Huh?"

 "What? New discoveries?"

"Yeah, so I wanted you two to see it for yourselves, which is why I brought you here."

And with that, Kisaragi-san whipped something off her desk.

 "This is...?"

"This is the new Trans Potion I made."

In her hand was a tiny bottle filled with clear, sky-blue liquid. It looked almost identical to the one I already knew. Nothing special... right?

"So, 'new' means it's different from the old Trans Potion, right?"

"Exactly. With the new Trans Potion, the side effects can be reduced by a whopping 90%."

 "Huh!? 90%...!"

Sakurako and I froze, both practically falling off our chairs. I mean, that's basically no side effects, right!? Kisaragi-san, you're a madwoman!

"If this new Trans Potion is safe, we can totally recommend it to people! This is perfect!"

I threw my hands in the air, giddy with excitement.

"Heh... it's a little cruel to say this when you're so pumped, Takeru-kun..."

"Huh? Cruel? What do you mean?"

"Turns out, while the new Trans Potion does drastically reduce side effects, there's one big problem..."

 "A big problem?"

"Yeah. With the new Trans Potion, even if there are no side effects and you get a huge boost in physical ability, skills don't show up."

 "Huh!? What!?"

Sakurako and I froze again. If that's the case, then we've got a serious problem.

"So, it looks like we have to risk those side effects. Ugh..."

Sakurako grumbled, looking miserable. Just then—

"Well, anyway, that's what I figured out from the analysis. And based on that, I thought... maybe we could lessen the severity of the side effects, y'know?"

 "Huh? Lessen the... side effects...?"

"S-so, what do you mean by...?"

"I mean, can we reduce the side effects themselves?"

"Reducing the side effects? Like making them less severe?"

 "Yeah. And... it worked."

 "Eeek!?"

 Kisaragi-san grinned proudly.

 "S-so, that... happened..."

 "Seriously!? Awesome, Kisaragi!!"

Sakurako and I freaked out at the news, but Kisaragi-san raised a finger.

"Sorry, but can you hold off on celebrating for a sec? Actually, another problem popped up."

 "Huh?"

 "Another... problem?"

"Yep. It's about the relationship between skills and side effects... actually..."

And then, the real headache dropped.
