Volume 5 Chapter 36 Magic Theory For Liz’s Power-up On Hold
While Randy was trying for the third time and Edgar and the others were excited about the mural information, Liz was enjoying a leisurely carriage trip towards the Waldner Marquis territory.
The well-maintained town roads were comfortable, with hardly any bumps thanks to the improved carriage.
The pleasant vibrations and the soft sunlight pouring into the carriage were enough to make even the skilled maid Rita doze off in front of her master.
In such a relaxing journey, Liz was also closing her eyes.
To an outsider, it seemed she was peacefully sleeping, but she was not actually asleep.
It could be said that she was in a mental world.
Anyway, inside herself, Ellie and Liz were having a deep conversation.
'Listen well, Liz. What I've taught you until now is the very basics of magic.'
Ellie, who looked exactly like Liz but with black hair and red eyes, smiled slyly and lit a flame at her fingertip.
'What I want you to learn this time is a technique called 'Multiple chanting.' Only when you can do this will you have the right to gaze into the depths of magic.'
'Multiple chanting? It sounds like it means stacking chants, but how is it different from Multiple chanting?'
As Liz tilted her head, Ellie laughed again and said, 'Don't put me in the same category as that childish trick.'
Multiple chanting is an advanced technique that allows you to cast 2 or more magic spells at once.
It is a technique that requires the control and image of magical power to proceed simultaneously, and it is said that even in today's world, only a limited number of people can do it.
Ellie dismisses it as 'childish trickery' and begins to explain the drawbacks of multiple chants.
No matter how much you concentrate, you can't avoid scattering your image.
The discord in that image leads to the waste of magical power.
She said──
'In the end, just activating 2 magics at the same time uses unnecessary effort and lacks practicality.'
With a scoff, Ellie asked what would happen if she used both water and fire at the same time?
She continued.
'That may be true, but combining defensive and offensive magic at the same time is──'
'Liz, that half-heartedness puts both your life and your friends' lives in danger.'
Serious Ellie showed a pure white flame dancing on her fingertips.
Though small in appearance, Liz could sense the terrifying magical power contained within.
This power was undoubtedly strong enough to match the pseudo-dragon breath she unleashed on the beach.
A technique that allows a person to do this.
At this moment, Liz couldn't possibly understand it.
Cold sweat ran down Liz's cheeks as she gazed at the pure white flame.
'Can this magic be blocked by Multiple chanting?'
With a sly smile, Ellie watched as Liz silently shook her head.
'If Multiple chanting is possible, this level of magic would be a piece of cake.'
As Ellie blew out the flame on her fingertips, Liz deeply bowed her head and said, 'Thank you in advance.'
'Very well. First, Multiple chanting, as you said, is just layering the same magic.'
Ellie stated this so easily, but Liz's face grew tense at her words.
'If you can understand the difficulty level alone, there is still a prospect of'
Ellie laughs out loud, but Liz can't say the same.
It's simple when you put it into words.
The same magic is multiplied.
But she immediately realized that actually listening to it would be a big difference from actually doing it.
Because the calculations would be too huge.
What is usually required for multiple chanting is parallel thought and the simultaneous deployment of each magic formula.
Distribute magical power and chant so that each formula will activate without contradiction.
It may sound very difficult, but in reality most sorcerers understand the formula intuitively and have it in their heads as an image.
Both images are expanded without contradiction.
That can be called multiple chanting.
But it's not like that for singing together.
'Let's take the most basic attack magic, fireball, as an example'
Ellie, with a small fireball glowing at her fingertip, asked Randy a question that even he should know: 'Do you understand the magic structure of a fireball?'
'Yes. There's generation, maintenance, movement... and sometimes, an explosion is included.'
"Now, can you answer the magic formula for each?"
This is another basic question, but Liz seems very suspicious if Randy can answer at this point.
No, he probably can't.
Randy wants to say, "I can at least cast a fireball," but what he creates is very different from what Liz creates.
Magic formulas are indeed deep and complex.
However, Liz answers them smoothly.
For example, the formula to calculate the magical power needed for creation involves 3 factors: 'magical power conversion efficiency,' 'mass of the fireball,' and 'temperature of the fireball.'
Out of these, the conversion efficiency is a fixed value that depends on the skill of the caster, while the others are variables.
If you increase the temperature or mass, the amount of magical power required also increases.
It's an extremely simple calculation.
However, maintaining those aspects requires a more complex formula.
Since magic interacts with the world, there is a need to form a force field to maintain it.
In elementary education, they take the energy intensity of the force field as a fixed value and simply multiply it by the volume of the fireball.
It's indeed a formula suitable for Randy, but it's not the same in higher education.
The energy intensity differs depending on the location of the generated fireball.
For example, the interior has low energy because it is covered by magic, but the exterior, being in direct contact with the world, requires higher energy to form the force field.
So they use integrals to calculate the total energy that sustains the entire fireball.
Randy is lost at this point.
After all, he can't even read ∫ (integral).
'Long S'.
The explanation of the formula even uses a symbol named after it in Randy: 'Um um.'
'The basics are fine,' says Ellie, looking satisfied.
The two of them also discuss advanced topics that Randy cannot possibly understand, such as calculating the firing speed and what would happen if an explosion were added.
Of course, magicians do not execute complex calculations every time.
As mentioned above, they perform magic many times, and each one is merely performed intuitively.
In short, they repeat the calculation cards over and over again, and store the formulas and answers in their mind.
With this strength of a fireball, the amount of magical power used is just this much.
This is the reason why it is said that you can cast magic with 'images and magical power.'
However, when it comes to multiple chanting, the situation changes.
'I'll say it again, but multiple chanting does not mean you need to layer magic formulas on top of each other.'
Even if you remember it by feeling, when it comes to chanting them again, the calculations become a lot more complicated.
The higher the mass and temperature, the more energy increases.
If the energy goes up, you also need energy to maintain it... If you mess up the calculations for the force field, the fireball could instantly explode.
It is an incredibly dangerous technique, but Ellie, grinning, teased Liz by saying, 'By the way, as long as I have magical power, I can cumulatively chant as much as I want.'
'──Please tell me one thing.'
With a serious look, Liz turned the breath that Ellie was about to blow from her fingertips into words, asking, 'What is it?'
'I understand the difficulty of multiple chanting, but wouldn't it be more efficient to build a new formula with the energy included?'
Prepare a magic spell with double the power of usual.
In response to Liz's seemingly reasonable question, Ellie laughed lightly, saying, 'Usually, that's...' and blew out the fireball from her fingertips again.
'Well, think of it as a test. If it's you, you should be able to see the usefulness of the multiple chanting technique.'
Liz reluctantly nodded to Ellie's words and slowly closed her eyes....Liz, who had returned from the spiritual world, slowly opened her eyes this time.
The sun is already setting outside, and the street where they plan to stay for the night is visible in the distance.
"Randy is working hard too. I have to work hard too..."
As Liz muttered, the royal capital, which should not be visible, was reflected in front of her.
* * *
"Well, tomorrow is maths..."
Even before the sun sets, Randy opens his textbooks and study guides, feeling confident about his performance on today's exam.
"...There it is. A long and thin S-shaped thing"
Randy made a bitter face, but his mind was focused not on the textbook, but on one specific point.
To avoid being noticed, he 'watched his target closely'...
While Randy kept his attention on the presence lurking on the roof across from him, he let out a quiet sigh.
"Seriously, I want to concentrate on studying for the exam."
It was bothersome, and as Randy sighed again, the presence began to fade away.
Did they realize they were being watched by Randy, or had they achieved their goal?
From this distance, Randy could not tell which it was.
"Now, I wonder who sent them... the dark side, [North Wall], or someone else? I've got some time until Liz and the others arrive, so I might as well investigate."
In Randy's eyes, gazing blankly out the window, the town slowly welcomed the night.
