Volume 2 Chapter 15-2 Stone Diviner Apprentice, Beware of Evil Beasts

"No, I'm not really trying to eat it or anything... well, uh... hmm..."

The beautiful haniwa squatted down weakly, holding its head.

I wondered what was wrong, and Rolus and I exchanged glances.

Just a moment ago, I thought about quickly getting rid of it, but if it's a wicked beast targeting Ms. Percella, wouldn't leaving it alone be a terrible move?

It's better to throw the beast into a cage than to let it run free.

"You don't intend to harm Ms. Percella, do you?"

 "Of course not."

 He shook his head vigorously.

"You don't plan to get close to Ms. Percella, play with her, and then toss her aside, do you?"

 "Of course not!"

He shook his head even more vigorously than before.

His face looked like it might fly off somewhere.

 From centrifugal force.

"Then why Ms. Percella? You seem to be in your mid-thirties, yet you're a married man, right?"

His hair got messy from shaking his head too much, and he made a face like a haniwa again.

Then, looking a bit embarrassed, he averted his gaze from me.

 "...I'm not married yet."

 So he was single.

"What! I thought for sure a married man was prowling for an affair!"

"So that's why he had such a scary face...!"

The one the haniwa referred to was definitely Rolus.

I was behind Rolus, and since he wasn't facing me, I couldn't see his expression, but apparently, he looked scary.

"What kind of face does he have?"

 "──Just the usual face."

Rolus turned around, and he really did have the usual face.

"Though he looked at me like I was a bug."

Seems like he was making a really intense face.

 "...So, what about Ms. Percella?"

"Are you going to help me!?"

Just a moment ago, he had a haniwa-like face, but now it transformed into a face like a puppy begging for help.

 Poor thing.

"I wouldn't say I'm going to help; I just want to hear the circumstances. It's terrifying to think someone untrustworthy is by Ms. Percella's side."

 "You're extremely on guard..."

Well, considering I don't even know who he is, it's no wonder he's cautious.

"First, please tell me about yourself. If I determine you're still untrustworthy, I'll promptly contact the teacher of Attack Magic to learn how to deal with harmful beasts, and I'll have you practice it."

 "Eep"

Mister Eliseo has a debt to me, so he'll come right away, eager to share information with me.

As I thought this, he opened up and shared everything.

His name, status, and the reason he was here today.

Apparently, he came here as an escort for his little sister, who wanted a fortune told by my teacher.

By the way, the valued client who brought a gift to the teacher seems to be their Mother.

My trust in him increased just a little.

"I... fell in love at first sight with Lady Percella. It's embarrassing at my age, but."

 "Love at first sight"

Their meeting was at a certain evening gathering.

Captivated by Ms. Percella, he gradually approached her until he could manage small talk.

"Noble gatherings are mostly filled with self-promotion."

 "That's true."

"Having been subjected to pointless bragging about profits or expensive purchases, she told me she had a brag of her own, which was you."

 "Me?"

"Lady Elena is my prized friend, she said, and I thought how adorable that was..."

 "That's certainly... very cute."

 Honestly, my face is hot.

 Because of embarrassment.

"It's the first time I've thought a girl was this cute, and I've fallen for her, but I'm already this old."

He seems to be 33, so there's quite an age gap.

"I understand that I should give up. But, well..."

"...I feel like Ms. Percella has someone she likes."

 "Huh..."

At my mutter, he wore a picture-perfect expression of despair.

"This is a story from when we were in the academy──though I don't know how it is now."

 "...the person was..."

"It should have been someone from the same year."

 "...right."

 He perfectly drooped his shoulders.

"If you really don't want to give up, shall I try reading the divination this time?"

When I said that, he quickly looked up.

He directed a hopeful gaze toward me.

"It's not possible today, but maybe next week."

"Please let me make a reservation...!"

This time, he sent a pleading look to Rolus.

Though Rolus appeared somewhat displeased, he seemed to accept it, as if it couldn't be helped for work.

"Then, I look forward to it next week."

As he said that and bowed his head, his younger sister came out from the mansion.

She looked at her brother bowing toward me, her face filled with curiosity.

 "Well then, I'll be waiting."

With that, he left with his younger sister, smiling brightly.

"Huh, Elder Brother does divination too?"

 "Ah."

"It's rare to see that, isn't it?"

 They chatted like that.
