Chapter 261 The Disappeared Celestial Race
We were led by Berberi-san to the basement of the large mansion where the lord of the Celestial Race was supposed to reside.
The place was a square space that seemed to be over 50 meters (164 feet) on each side.
The first thing that caught our eyes was a circular scorched mark, and a part of the Celestial Race's wing, along with a corpse-like object that only had its waist and lower body remaining, left behind as if to block the scorched mark.
"Brother, doesn't this situation look familiar?"
"Yeah, I guess it does."
"Doesn't it look like the place Maya and the others were taken to?"
"Yeah, it does."
At first glance, it definitely looks similar.
The only difference is the size and scale of the room.
The size here is incomparable to the other one.
"Anyway, let's wake this one up and ask what happened."
I touch the corpse that only has its waist and lower body remaining and use magic (as usual).
"'Resurrect (Resurrection Spell)'"
However, I don't feel like my mana has decreased.
It's likely that the magic failed to activate.
"What's going on? Why won't the 'Resurrect' spell work? It should be possible to resurrect even from ashes or dust, right?"
"Brother, this, could it be...?"
"Yeah?"
"Maybe it's because half of it is over there?"
Indeed, if the magic activated in both places, separated as they are, one person could become 2.
In that sense, it might have failed.
"I see. Can't be helped. Let's put the body away, and... ah."
"Ah?"
In the spot where the corpse was moved, there was a familiar-looking pattern engraved.
I don't know what it is, but it was clearly a magic circle.
"Umm... well, this is no good."
"What's wrong?"
"Even when Maya appraises it, it only comes up as a part of a magic circle. The effect and everything else is completely unknown."
"I see, that can't be helped."
"Yeah..."
"Maya-chan, then"
"Yeah, I'll take some photos."
"Thanks."
Maya-chan took out her phone and started snapping multiple shots.
These will be compared later with the documents we have from the old Daioraden era.
"Mother (Privia)..."
"Ah, I never expected this turn of events, not even I..."
At least, almost everyone managed to escape, leaving behind half their bodies.
This basement was probably prepared for that very purpose.
Mother crossed her arms, her expression filled with regret.
""Mother...""
"You see..."
""Yes...""
"The method they used to abduct Tatsuma-kun was direct and didn't involve magic..."
"Yeah, Maya thought so too. Probably, the magic circle they used to bring us here is different."
"That's right. If they could do that, there would be no need to come all the way to our place and take Tatsuma-kun."
"Yes, their magic was probably a limited teleportation spell that connected this place to somewhere."
"Yeah, Maya thinks so too."
"That's right. So, they intended to erase the magic circle after escaping."
But they couldn't erase it completely because of the half-remaining corpses.
That's what must have happened.
"But at least, it's similar to the method they used to bring us to this world, right?"
"Yeah. That means the Celestial Race might have had it, right, Big Brother?"
"Yeah, that's what I think too."
"Celestial Race, I'll kill you next time I find you..."
For the days we thought it was a siege, the Celestial Race must have been desperately thinking only of escape.
If they weren't so panicked, they wouldn't have left such traces behind.
So, they probably didn't think they'd lose even a bit.
"Then, let's search every inch of this place."
"Yes."
"Yes."
* * *
With this much space, when it comes to a place this big, just the 5 of us: me, Maya-chan, Mother, Berberi-san, and Neta-san, can't possibly cover it all.
So, we asked the Dragonkin for help.
We started searching every nook and cranny of the mansion the Celestial Race left behind, with the help of the Dragonkin.
Just as Mother said.
We searched every corner until the sun went down, just as Mother instructed.
But, as I thought, it ended up being fruitless.
There were no documents, books, or any materials left behind.
There was some food left, but no furniture or clothing.
And of course, not a single Magic Tool was left untouched.
It was as if they had taken everything with them, leaving nothing behind.
"Well, Maya-chan, the fact that they escaped so thoroughly..."
It's like they packed up and moved, leaving only useless stuff behind.
"Yeah, brother, I bet they don't plan on coming back here, right?"
"Even though they died, they left their own kind and ran away. Can Tatsuma-kun and Maya-kun they doing that?"
"Yeah, Mother, it's like they treated them as disposable tools. Maya might not like that. You think so too, right, brother?"
"Yeah, I think so too."
"Well, some of the nobility and lords, they tend to be like that. Remember I told you about them before, Tatsuma-kun?"
"Yes, Mother (Privia)."
The nobility and the former king of Daioraden were like that.
The former king didn't consider the people in the castle town as human.
Those in power can sometimes lose their sanity.
That's what Mother taught me.
"In a way, the fight to free the Dragonkin from the Celestial Race's rule..."
"Yes..."
"The fight to make them pay for kidnapping you two..."
"Yes..."
"Well, to be honest, Maya-kun and I might have been like 2 peas in a pod, but when our family was taken away, we felt the same as you Dragonkin. So, I couldn't just sit around, and I came here with Alesion."
"Maya felt the same as you, mother"
"Yeah. Mother, Maya-chan, thank you."
"Yeah."
"Hehe."
"Well, there's no use regretting it now. Let's get on with the post-war processing, shall we? Hmm?"
"Yes, Mother."
"Yeah, yeah, Mother is right."
Although we won, we also feel like we lost.
So, we decided to change our mindset and do what needs to be done.
