Volume 2 Chapter 19 Role

Volume 2 Chapter 19 Role

To grow a job class, you need a nutrient called 'divine growth point.'

Divine growth points are given by the gods when they see the results of defeating monsters.

However, in Ms. Nemophila's case, she couldn't gain any divine growth points even after defeating monsters.

 Instead...

"Wait, you get divine growth points by taking damage?"

"Yeah, I think that's just how her body works."

After hearing that explanation, Hollis frowned, looking a bit grumpy.

It seemed like the explanation was a bit too brief for him to fully understand.

Not wanting to deal with any more complaints, I decided to start from scratch.

"Did you know there are '2 types' of ways to grow a job class?"

 "...?"

"Basically, a job class can only grow by defeating monsters. However, depending on the job class, there are other ways to obtain divine growth points."

At that explanation, Hollis's youthful face twisted in confusion, as if he didn't know that either.

So, I figured I should start from the very beginning.

"'Divine growth points' are given by the gods based on the results of monster defeats. Also, the amount you can obtain can vary depending on 'special ways of defeating' or 'fighting methods suited to the job class'."

"That's what they call 'first defeat divine growth points' or 'one-hit defeat divine growth points,' right?"

Lady Clematis chimed in next to me, and I nodded in response before continuing.

"The secret to Ms. Nemophila's late bloom was hidden in this 'fighting method suited to the job class'."

 "...What do you mean?"

"Each job class has its own 'role,' and the more you fight in a way that fits that role, the more divine growth points you can earn. For example, if you're in the 'warrior' class, you'd fight with swords or spears, and if you're in the 'magician' class, you'd use magic to battle. That way, you grow faster, you know?"

One of the lesser-known aspects of divine growth points is this 'role' thing.

Each job class has a 'suitable fighting style,' and the more you stick to that style, the easier it is to earn divine growth points.

So, if you're a warrior, you'd engage in close combat with swords or spears, and if you're a magician, you'd do long-range combat with magic.

Well, the job class is something that the gods decide and bestow upon you.

It's like they're saying, 'This fighting style suits you,' so if you fight accordingly, the gods will praise you, and it makes sense that you'd earn a lot of divine growth points.

"Hmm, so if a magician fights with a sword to take down monsters, they won't get much divine growth points, huh?"

"Not that you wouldn't get any at all, but it would definitely be less than if you took them down with magic."

I catch a glimpse of Lady Clematis nodding in understanding, so I continue.

"There are slight differences in how you earn divine growth points based on your role. Now, here's the main point: some job classes are given 'non-combat' roles, which means you can earn divine growth points without having to defeat monsters."

 "Non-combat roles?"

"The easiest example would be a 'healer.' The healer's role is to 'treat those injured by monsters,' so by healing wounds caused by monsters, you can earn divine growth points."

Even if they don't defeat the monsters themselves, they can still earn divine growth points just by treating the injuries caused by them.

So, it means you can level up without defeating monsters.

"...That said, you still get way more divine growth points from taking down monsters, ya know? Maybe that's why not many people know about this way of getting divine growth points, and nobody really practices it."

"...So what? How does that relate to Nemophila?"

I continued explaining to Hollis, who looked pretty grumpy.

"Ms. Nemophila's 'Princess Knight' is a special job class given a non-combat role. And that role is probably to 'protect people from monsters'."

 "Protect people from monsters?"

"Yeah, the Princess Knight, as I mentioned earlier, can earn divine growth points by taking hits from monsters."

Right after that, I quietly smiled, recalling the moment I realized Ms. Nemophila's hidden talent.

"And for the Princess Knight, the ratio of divine growth points earned when 'defeating monsters' versus when 'fulfilling her role' is just way too 'extreme'."

 "Huh?"

"When Ms. Nemophila 'defeats a monster,' she gets a total of '0' divine growth points. But instead, when she 'fulfills her role'... meaning when she takes hits from monsters, she can earn 'a ton of divine growth points'."

 "..."

Basically, for non-combat job classes, the divine growth points earned for fulfilling their role are pretty minimal.

No matter what, defeating monsters is way more efficient for growth.

But for Ms. Nemophila, that ratio is extreme; she gets no divine growth points from defeating monsters, but instead, she gets a lot when she fulfills her role.

So, Ms. Nemophila couldn't level up no matter how many monsters she took down.

Plus, I was trying too hard to protect her, which meant she couldn't even fulfill her role as the Princess Knight.

That's why I felt like I had to apologize to Ms. Nemophila.

"I thought, 'She's sickly, she's timid, she's a princess, I can't let her get hurt.' So, while I was protecting Ms. Nemophila, I was out there hunting monsters. But the truth is, it was the opposite; she needed to be able to protect herself and even protect someone else as part of her job class. It was none other than Sir Hollis who made me realize that."

"...It was because I pushed Sand Knight on her back then..."

Hollis bit his lip, filled with regret.

At that time, when Ms. Nemophila was attacked by the Sand Knight, she was actually leveling up.

Realizing this, I remembered the very first time she leveled up and came to a possibility.

When we were ambushed by Pin Rabbit, my help didn't arrive in time, and Ms. Nemophila got hit.

Luckily, she blocked it with her shield, so it wasn't a big deal, and afterward, she took down Pin Rabbit and leveled up from level one to level 2.

I thought it was just a coincidence that she leveled up to 2 at that moment, but in reality, she gained a ton of divine growth points from taking that hit from Pin Rabbit.

"Hmm, I get that the way to acquire divine growth points is special. But that alone doesn't explain why Nemophila grew so fast, right? It's just that the method of growth is special; the amount of divine growth points she gets isn't different from other job classes, is it?"

"Yeah, Lady Clematis, you got it right. Basically, Ms. Nemophila just gets the divine growth points that others earn from monster hunting by taking hits from the monsters herself."

At that, LadyClematis smiled, looking quite pleased.

"So, that means you've either boosted her power or found some way to increase the amount of divine growth points she get, huh?"

 "Uh, y-yeah, both are correct."

Lady Clematis is sharp, no doubt about it.

Just saying that the way to get divine growth points is special doesn't really explain how I've grown this fast.

Even if you notice the way to grow, that's just where Ms. Nemophila starts.

It could be summed up simply as, "Thanks to the Trainer's 'support' skill!" but there's another factor that was even more effective.

"I'll talk about the first one, 'my power,' later. What's really important is the other method, a 'special way' that only the Princess Knight can use to train."

 "A special way?"

I'm not Ms. Nemophila herself, but I answered with a bit of pride.

 "It's training using 'Barrier magic'!"
