Volume 6 Chapter 50 The Clumsy And Warrior-Like Older Brother
From the recent duel, it became clear that Getsuya seems calm on the outside, but inside, he has a lot of strong feelings. He's a lot like his sister, Mikage. Usually, he stays cool, but if something happens to his lord, Rouza, he can lose his temper pretty easily.
"When he meets new people or doesn't know them well, he can be easily fooled, but my brother is just as much of a troublemaker as Rouza-sama. Well, it seems that many people from the Shiraha family have strong emotions like this."
Shiraha means "drawn sword."
It's said that by being in the sheath of a "lord," one is allowed to exist as a person.
Before serving the Egawa family, he was known for cutting down people on the battlefield.
"In chaotic times, it's the lord's job to decide where to point the Shiraha sword, and in peaceful times, to be the sheath that welcomes others. Even though I went into the duel planning to win, I didn't properly prepare for what to do if I lost. That's my fault."
"Stopping him during those times was my job when I was at Sanmoto. Honestly, you really haven't changed at all."
Getsuya stayed silent, looking serious while listening to Rouza's apology and Mikage's scolding, but his ears and tail drooped weakly. As always, beastmen──especially Shiraha sibling──are easy to read. It was a bit out of place, but it made me feel warm inside.
But I couldn't just relax like that.
Rouza continued.
"I also feel sorry for you, Mikage. You must have found this guy's clumsy and vague way of speaking annoying. And in the end, he even cut off your arm. Everything is because I didn't take enough care."
"...I'm fine about my arm being cut off. Kyunei has fixed it for me. In the end, I managed to win against my brother, so I've settled my personal feelings. However, it's true that he broke our agreement, so he should face some kind of punishment."
Normally, I would think that Getsuya should also get some kind of punishment for trying to protect the agreement between lords, but since it helped Mikage overcome her worries, I don't feel like he should lose his life over it. Still, if we just brush this off, neither of us will feel satisfied. I hope he can repay me in some way someday.
"I know this might not be an excuse, but I want to clear up any misunderstandings as a lord."
"Misunderstanding?"
Nodding, Rouza glanced at Getsuya before turning back to Mikage.
"Even though he seems clumsy and unfriendly, he really cares about you, his sister. He has cared for you even more since before he left Sanmoto."
"R-Rouza-sama!?"
"You're not good at expressing yourself, so I'm saying this for you. Don't interrupt me right now."
Getsuya looked really shocked, but Rouza silenced him firmly.
"Let me make this clear. The reason Getsuya doesn't like you walking the path of the sword isn't because you're a girl. He simply doesn't want you to get hurt."
"""Eh?"""
The rest of us, except for Mikage, made confused sounds. We thought it was because of Sanmoto's customs.
"...I understood that from the duel without Rouza-sama having to tell me. He really is bad with words."
Mikage, the one being talked about, seemed to agree with this. But hey, you just had your arm chopped off by that brother!
"He has always found you adorable and couldn't help but care for you. That's why he wanted to keep you away from the sword. He wanted to prevent something irreversible from happening. Even if you were a boy──his brother──it wouldn't have changed. In that case, he would have probably taken your sword away by force much earlier. He might have even taken an arm or 2."
"You're not saying that if I don't have an arm to hold a sword, I can't go to battle, right?"
"This might be hard for people in this country──especially someone like Kyunei-sensei to accept──but it's not an unusual thought for warriors from Sanmoto."
Kyunei looked pale and nervous as she asked her question, and Rouza quickly agreed.
"Isn't Sanmoto being a bit too serious about this?"
Aina suddenly realized something.
"Wait, are you saying that Yukina-san, whom he barely know, was treated like an enemy?"
"You're right, Aina-jou. The reason he was so hostile towards Black Blade is because he was worried about his sister getting involved with bad people. Honestly, he just can't let go of his little sister."
The more I hear, the more the image of a strict older brother falls apart. This is just a story about a clumsy 'big brother who loves his sister.'
Getsuya couldn't take it anymore and looked down, but it was clear to everyone that his cheeks were turning red from embarrassment.
"After all, I lost in a one-on-one duel, and now my subordinate has made things worse. I have no intention of asking Getsuya to follow Sanmoto now. I won't forgive his past behavior either."
After finishing his speech, Rouza straightened up and looked directly at Mikage.
"But I want you to remember that Getsuya did care about you in his own way."
