Volume 3 Chapter 43 It's Common Not To Understand What Is Written In Japanese
An oval device shines, and words appear in the center...
"I can't read any of this."
"It's ancient language."
According to Ellie, the [Tower of Time] is like a living thing, so all the information and data are stored inside it. And everything is written in the language from that time. So, the 'Japanese' they see now is actually an ancient language...
(I can read it... but──)
Next to Randy, Ellie is smoothly reading the ancient Japanese. Honestly, Randy could jump in and say, "This means this──" but he doesn't feel like he can.
Even though the writing is in Japanese, he doesn't understand the vocabulary at all. While he's thinking about this, Ellie clicks on a cursor that says 'Time-Space Magic'──that much he understands.
With a frown, Ellie looks at the text in front of them, and Randy glances down at it.
(This is also Japanese... I can read it... but I have no idea what it says.)
Exactly. Just like Randy thinks, the writing is in Japanese, but the content is completely confusing for him, who used to be an ordinary person. It's not just that he can't translate it; even though it's his native language, it feels more foreign than a different language.
For example...
"Creating a pseudo Kerr black hole by humans and expanding the regions of the 'realm of existence' and 'ergosphere' through frame dragging──."
Or...
"Through experiments passing through the 'singularity' of a Kerr black hole, access to another spacetime has been proven. This proves the existence of closed timelike curves in spacetime──."
And even more...
"It means that observers can circulate through spacetime and return to different time coordinates. In other words, we have created a theoretical framework that allows time travel."
Then there's talk about the stability of singularities, quantum effects, and violations of energy conditions... but those will be solved soon.
They keep explaining things that make no sense and act like they have it all 'figured out'.
Randy finds it way too hard to claim he can read this! He can read it, but the content is completely meaningless to him, so he quietly looks away, thinking, "I don't get it at all."
"That's understandable. It's ancient language, and it needs specialized knowledge."
With a frown, Ellie says it will take her some time to figure it out, so Randy and the others decide to wait in the room.
"Time travel... huh?"
Next to Luke, who mutters that, Cecilia, sitting in a chair, says, "Speaking of which..."
"You seemed like you wanted to go back to the past, Luke."
"Do I want to go back...? I'm not sure."
Luke scratches his head awkwardly, and Cecilia tilts her head in confusion.
Randy, leaning against the wall a little away from them, listens to their conversation. If Luke wants to go back to the past, Randy has one idea about why.
But it would be rude for Randy to say it out loud.
If he could go back... whether to go back or not, and what to do in the past, is up to Luke. Of course, interfering with the past is too dangerous and not recommended. But Randy doesn't think what Luke wants to do would have a huge impact.
He knows that even small events can greatly change the future.
Anyway, whether Luke decides to go back or not, Randy can't interfere with his life choices.
As he watches the two of them have a light conversation, Randy walks over to Ellie, who is struggling.
"Looks like you're having a hard time."
"Don't be silly. I've already decoded most of it."
With a smile, Ellie asks Randy to show her the photos he brought.
"You, maybe──."
Excited, Randy pulls out several photos from his magic bag. All of them are pictures of Liz, and Ellie looks at Randy with narrowed eyes.
"What's with that look?"
"Nothing at all."
With her cheeks puffed out, Ellie responds,
"Why are you mad?"
"You're the one who's mad!"
It seems like a pointless argument is about to start, but with one comment from Randy, the whole situation changes.
"Don't get mad just because the photo doesn't look good."
Randy pouted and handed Ellie a picture, saying, "This one turned out pretty well." It looked like Liz, but...
"Is this maybe me?"
"There's no way that's you. Your eyes and mouth look totally different."
He placed Liz's photo next to Ellie's, but Ellie couldn't see the difference. It made sense; lately, Liz's body had been completely taken over, and she looked just like Liz.
Still, Randy could tell just from a photo, which was kind of creepy.
"This one looks a bit angry, though──."
Randy showed a photo that he remembered being taken.
"Okay, okay, I get it!"
Ellie blushed and pushed the photo away. Randy chuckled, saying, "You're busy being mad and embarrassed."
"Just put the photo down already!"
Ellie's voice was high-pitched, and Randy replied, "Sure, sure," as he placed the photo on a nearby table.
"Alright, here we go."
Ellie held her hand over the photo. A soft light covered it, and the edges slowly turned yellow. The photo started to fade, with some parts turning completely white.
But as Ellie kept using her magical power, 2 photos remained. One was the slightly angry photo of Ellie, and the other was a smiling photo of Liz.
"Looks like this will take about 50 years... Should we test it a bit more?"
"No, we can do the tests when we get back."
Randy carefully picked up the old photo and nodded, "Yeah," as he tucked it away safely.
"Still, that's some amazing magic."
"It's magic that speeds up the aging of wine, apparently."
It seemed like a pretty ordinary kind of magic, but thanks to it, they could test how photos age. Maybe they should be thankful for the ordinary magic of ancient people.
By the way, Ellie was still explaining how this magic worked, but Randy didn't understand any of it.
Apparently, it involves taking something into a small fake dimension and speeding up time inside it.
Anyway, Randy's main goal of testing how photos age was done. He wanted to explore more, but the stuff written down was all confusing to him. Reading it would just make his eyes glaze over and waste time.
So, while waiting for Ellie to figure it out, Randy decided to take pictures of the surroundings. He planned to show them to Annabelle and Cory when he got back.
As he started taking pictures, Randy's eyes caught the console in front of him. It was just a random impulse that made him touch the keyboard, but the words on the screen really grabbed his attention.
'Verification of memories left in dragon's blood.'
Some words didn't make sense, but overall, it seemed to be about how dragon's blood is a kind of memory medium. They were researching if they could scan the blood to see the past experiences of dragons.
It looked like this research had been going on for a long time as a way to observe past events alongside time travel magic research.
But it seemed that this research hit a snag due to an accident.
One researcher had summoned a dragon using a lot of dragon's blood and offerings. Maybe they thought it would be faster to ask the dragon directly instead of tracing the blood's memories. Anyway, they managed to defeat the summoned dragon, but it came with a lot of sacrifices.
To prevent something like that from happening again, they...
"Wait, did they really hide it by mixing it into that Guardian?"
...Randy muttered with a wry smile. They had hidden a tiny amount of dragon's blood in the Guardian to make sure no mistakes would happen again. But because of this incident, it seemed that faction disputes within the Tower of Time had intensified.
It looked like even in the grand research institution called the Tower of Time, they couldn't predict the 'foolish future woven by humans.' It seemed like a ridiculous ending, but for Randy, the fact that dragons could be summoned was even more important.
(So, if we have all those dead bodies, can we theoretically summon the dragon inside me? But wait, does that mean the guardian's blood is stronger?)
Randy thought about it but couldn't find an answer. He figured it was worth a try once Ellie was done with her business, so he looked up from the console.
Just then, Ellie's voice echoed through the room, saying, "No way!"
"No way? What do you mean?"
"It means exactly that. The time travel magic isn't perfect."
Ellie explained that the [Tower of Time] is a higher-dimensional being, which means it can move through the 4th dimension. So, the tower itself can travel through time. However, if a living person tries to do it, their body would definitely fall apart.
It's like trying to pass through a black hole in real life, so it's not surprising.
"But it said it was solved... didn't it?"
Randy blurted out, and everyone turned to him, asking, "Can you read it?"
"Uh... well, I can read it, but I don't understand it."
Randy shook his head with a wry smile and explained, "Is it like memories from a past life?"
"It means the memories that come from dragon blood."
It seemed like they were blaming the somewhat useful dragon blood for this.
"I've never heard of that before..."
Ellie frowned, but for now, the only thing that could explain such a strange phenomenon was the dragon blood and its ancient memories──he was simply a reincarnated person.
That said, they didn't have time to waste on that right now. Even if he was a reincarnated person, he didn't have the knowledge of this world like other reincarnators, nor was he a god's messenger with cheat powers.
If the only advantage of being a reincarnator was a long life experience, it didn't matter whether it was memories from dragon blood or his past life.
With all that in mind, Randy's comment about the dragon blood was taken over by Ellie, who said, "It's true that theoretically, it's been solved," and the topic rolled back into motion.
"To travel through time, you need a tool called the [Coat of Time]."
"Oh, another tempting item..."
Randy's eyes sparkled, and Ellie sighed, saying, "You really are something."
"It even has the creation method written down, and most of the materials are stored in the tower... but there's one important thing missing."
Everyone fell silent, waiting for her to continue.
"It's dragon skin."
Ellie opened her mouth with a bitter expression, and Randy thought that it seemed like they might actually get to battle sooner than he expected, secretly smiling to himself.
