Chapter 39 The Miscalculation Of A Small-time Villain
Shouk Shateiya thought that to feel happier than others, you need to be a bit sneaky and clever.
Isn't that true for everyone? You flatter those who are stronger or more important than you, and you pick on the weak.
People say it's bad to look down on others, but humans often find peace by doing just that.
Even if you feel angry when someone else does it, when it's your turn to be the bully, you label the victim as the bad one.
Living life often requires this kind of cold-heartedness.
But people who turn a blind eye to their own ugliness and stay unaware aren't really evil. They're just "normal."
Being aware and still acting like a jerk is what makes someone "bad," and Shouk knew he was a villain.
In that sense, Shouk understood his own place and knew how to behave.
Little villains are cowardly. They know they can't do anything alone.
That's why when he entered Valkyrie Academy, he first sought out someone powerful to back him up.
Having power is great. But too much can lead to disaster. It's best to have just enough to be noticed but not so much that it becomes overwhelming.
The clever little fox wanted this and found it in Ruzure Senegal. He was a noble with some power left in the knight society of Asgardam, but he was also a proud and clueless rich kid.
Even though he had some flaws, his generous money was a perfect target.
Wealthy people flocked to him just by flattering him. For Shouk, this was ideal.
But Ruzure wasn't the only one who helped Shouk live a rich life.
Before he knew it, Ruzure brought along a shady-looking guy named Hiiro Merifar. They seemed to have some old connection.
Hiiro was big but clumsy and bad at talking, making him a miserable outcast in class. When Shouk heard about his background, he couldn't help but smirk.
Hiiro was the kind of person Shouk could easily look down on. He was a small man who was perfect for Shouk to vent his stress on while dealing with Ruzure's arrogance. Hiiro's presence was like a tailwind for Shouk.
Or at least it was supposed to be.
"Break me? Cough... bring it on. I’m ready."
One day, Hiiro's dull eyes suddenly sparkled with a strong light.
What was once a tailwind had turned into a headwind.
"Then I'll break you too."
"Huh? What are you going to break with that sorry state of yours, Hiiro?"
"Your big, ugly nose."
"Is being stupid something you can't fix, Hiiro?"
Shouk didn't like it.
He hated the strong will shining in Hiiro's eyes.
It made his skin crawl.
Facing someone he shouldn't be able to beat (Instructor Shidou), Hiiro stood his ground without backing down.
It was frustrating. After their big fallout, Ruzure made things harder than they needed to be, and for some reason, the sweetness of other people's misfortunes faded. Every time he saw Hiiro working hard and starting to stand out, it made Shouk boil with irritation.
He even felt like he wanted to scratch his chest raw.
He didn't know why. He didn't want to know. Of course, he couldn't accept it.
Then the opportunity came, and for the first time in his life, Shouk put everything he had into this selection test... and he cornered Hiiro.
He planned it all out.
He made Hiiro crawl.
He went all out.
Yet, this guy didn't ask for forgiveness.
He didn't realize his place.
He was still trying to fight back.
With those annoying eyes shining with determination, he stood up and spat out that he was different now.
"Wake up, you wannabe hero."
The red spores he spread and the anger burning in his brain── it was hard to tell which was redder.
But seeing Hiiro, who could only cover his nose and mouth to avoid the falling red, made Shouk smile.
He chose the same way to deal with it as he did with Bilibimos's powder, which was the right choice.
But it didn't mean anything. The clueless loudmouth probably didn't understand that.
"Cough, ugh, ugh...!"
"Ha!"
Why did they make Hiiro sick when he can't even use much magic?
It's all to mess up his breathing and stop him from defending against the red mushroom spores.
Just as planned, Hiiro inhaled. He really inhaled a lot.
"Ha ha ha! Too bad for you, sickie! You inhaled a ton of those mushroom spores!"
"Damn it... so this was your game..."
"Ha ha ha! You're too late! Soon, you'll have such a bad headache that you won't even be able to attack! The useless loser has finally become a useless doll!"
"...Shouk!"
Seeing Hiiro struggle to breathe is just too satisfying.
He can't describe how great it feels.
No matter what he does, Hiiro is below him.
He made him realize the power difference, just like he wanted.
Now, he can just enjoy tormenting him.
"Alright, it's time for some fun... bullying the weak!"
He can show him.
He can make him understand.
In the end, it was Hiiro who was wrong.
"Regret it a lot! Your own arrogance!"
Shouk rushed at Hiiro, who was hunched over like he had given up, gripping a knife.
The look of pure pleasure on his face was ugly.
"Ha ha ha──Oof!?"
Hiiro's fist hit hard, breaking Shouk's nose sideways.
His face was so ugly it was hard to look at.
"Wh-why...?"
The question barely made it out of his mouth.
But the pain from the mushroom spores was nothing compared to the intense pain he felt now.
With just one punch, the little villain's will was easily crushed.
