Chapter 28 Lyam Neshana
No way, no way, this is a clue!
Is this just luck for the protagonist? Or is it just convenient? Anyway, it looks like all my hard work might finally pay off.
I leaned forward without thinking.
"Seriously!?"
"Eek!?"
"Ah, crap, sorry!"
"Ah, um, it's okay, really."
Oh no. I got so excited that I grabbed her shoulder tightly. The scene looked like a scared girl turning red and a thug getting closer. In today's world, that would be a big deal.
I quickly apologized, and even though she was a bit shy, she forgave me.
Wow. She really is like a goddess. If I get to meet Goddess Norn again, I'll recommend this girl to be her assistant.
"Um, so, I have a friend named Murdoch who is an old medicine man. He collects rare books as a hobby."
"Wait, are you saying he might have The Pleiades Star Crown Beast Catalog?"
"Yes, but Murdoch can be a bit grumpy, so I'm not sure if he'll share it... and there's a chance he might not even have it."
"I don't care. Even a slim chance is good enough."
I was ready to search all over the country for it.
Even if it's a long shot, I'm okay with that.
"And if that doesn't work out, I'll figure out something else."
"...You really won't give up, huh?"
"Of course not. As long as you're 'unharmed,' my resolve is 'unbreakable.' Ive come this far. Not giving up, even if the world flips upside down."
"...Invincible, huh?"
"Yep."
"...I see. Well, if that's the case, I'm sure it'll be okay."
I can't give up. I need to show Quollio that I'm serious.
And I don't want to waste the kindness of this girl who has been so helpful. I didn't want to let her smile at my silly bravado go to waste.
* * *
"I'm sorry. I wish I could take you to Murdoch's place, but I have a meeting today."
The girl thought it was a strange connection.
She knew she was shy and not the type to take care of someone she just met.
If someone who knows her well saw her like this, they would be surprised. At least Murdoch would be shocked. A girl who usually struggles to connect with others is now helping a stranger by giving him a "letter of introduction."
She hoped he would be able to help.
It was just a simple note, but the guy was already putting it away carefully.
"This is more than enough."
"Really?"
More than enough. That's true.
But instead of feeling satisfied, she was more worried, wondering if everything would be okay. She was surprised at herself for feeling that way.
"As I said before, Murdoch is a difficult person, but... good luck!"
"Yeah, yeah, I got it. I don't need a pep talk."
She felt relieved that he didn't ask why she was being so nice. After all, she didn't even know why she was being so helpful.
If he had asked, she would have just made a confused face and avoided the question.
(He's a strange person.)
If she had to say anything, it was that when she reached out to him, she caught a faint "scent."
A gentle smell of sweat. The scent of someone who is working hard for something.
And when she saw him stop, looking completely lost, she unconsciously called out to him.
"...I hope you find the book."
"Yeah."
He gave a somewhat awkward bow and ran off. This time, he wouldn't suddenly stop again.
As he walked away, she squinted her eyes and pulled her hood down deeper. It was like she was trying to shield herself from something bright.
She didn't know the full story, but he was definitely someone who was working hard for someone else, just like her intuition said.
"..."
He didn't feel that much older than her.
Even though he spoke roughly, he showed his feelings by holding his head in frustration and stomping his feet, which made him seem a bit childish.
He was a strange person. But he didn't seem like a bad guy.
The kind warmth hidden behind his tough appearance made her sniffle a little at that moment.
'Lyam! Hey!'
A bright voice rang out.
'Hey! Lyam! Lyam!? It's me, the unbeatable Big Sister Sham! Respond, respond!'
Just the tone of her voice was cheerful.
Her voice was so clear that it could stop anyone in
But nobody around seemed to notice, and the busy afternoon continued on.
Of course, that made sense. After all, the voice was echoing in the girl's "head."
'...I can hear you, big sister.'
'Oh, finally! I was so worried! You didn't respond and just showed up for our meeting, and I was really worried about you!'
'Sorry, big sister. I met someone... um, yeah. I met someone interesting.'
'Interesting person, huh? Wow, it's rare for you to say that, Lyam. Can you introduce me to them?'
'...I can't. We already said goodbye, and I forgot to ask his name.'
'What!?'
Did she forget to ask, or just didn't?
Lyam's bright eyes sparkled with mixed feelings.
'But maybe...?'
'Huh? Maybe what?'
'...Never mind. It's nothing.'
Maybe she could meet him again.
Keeping it to herself, the spring-colored girl, Lyam Neshana, headed to where her caring sister was waiting.
The warm spring breeze tickled her earlobes.
Her crescent moon earrings swayed gently, looking like they were enjoying the moment.
