Volume 17 Chapter 8 Barbarians Settlement
Michael moved forward with a slightly tense expression, clenching his jaw, while Al followed closely behind, keeping an eye on their surroundings.
As they approached the edge of the forest surrounding the Barbarians' village, they saw a goblin mage appear from a tent, trying to get closer to an orc.
They were within the effective range of detection spells, about 40 meters (131ft) away. Al must have noticed the reaction from the enhancement spell he cast on them. The two quickened their pace.
The orc noticed Michael getting closer and stood up, gripping a club. Two goblin mages pointed at Al and Michael.
However, the Barbarians realized that there were only two of them and started to snicker.
"Hey, you orcs! You won't get to do as you please here!"
"Gigigigigi!"
Michael opened his eyes wide and, despite trembling a bit, shouted as loudly as he could. The orc responded, looking relaxed, as if 2 humans were no big deal.
The orc and goblin mages didn't pay much attention to Al. Behind Michael, Al extended his palm toward the orc.
"Magic Sparks"──Exclusion Target (the two fallen, Michael)
A large, pale blue orb appeared in Al's outstretched palm. The orb flew straight past the orc and went behind it.
The orc looked puzzled for a moment, while the goblin mage noticed the spell and widened its eyes, trying to escape.
But in that instant, the large pale blue orb burst with a loud pop, scattering countless smaller orbs around.
Poof, poof, poof──
"Ugya gyagya!" "Gyagya gyagyaaa!"
The scattered small orbs made loud popping sounds when they hit something.
Colorful lights burst from the orbs, and the goblins and goblin mages nearby trembled before collapsing to the ground. The orc also let out a pained scream.
"We did it! Al! Awesome!"
Michael couldn't help but shout in joy at the spell's effect. However, the two orcs, who were about to kneel, opened their eyes wide and steadied themselves, glaring at Al.
But Al didn't flinch at their gaze; he just smiled.
"Michael, the orcs are coming. Be careful."
"O-Okay."
Michael readied his sword and looked at the orc. The orc's skin was scorched in places, but it didn't seem to have taken major damage.
With a loud roar, the orc charged toward Michael and Al.
"Over here, you pig!"
Michael waited until the last moment, his voice shaky but firm, and ran to the right. The orcs swung their clubs at him as he moved while shouting.
Michael barely dodged one, but couldn't avoid the other. However, it was deflected by a shield-shaped light. It was the effect of the 'Shield' spell.
"Whoa, that was fast. This is bad."
While Michael panicked, Al nodded lightly. He had bought enough time to cast his next spell.
'Piercing Spear.'
Four glowing spears appeared in Al's hands. The moment they appeared, they flew forward, leaving trails of light, and struck 2 orcs, 2 spears each, right in their stomachs.
"Bu-gya...!"
Letting out a small scream, the orc knelt down and fell over.
"Wha... what?"
"Good. Somehow...'
Michael was so surprised by the spell's effect that he lost his voice and stood there with his mouth open. Al calmly approached the fallen orcs to check their condition.
"Ally, behind you!"
A red-skinned goblin, a Goblin Mage, was sneaking up from behind, aiming for Al's blind spot. However, Al had been using 'Floating Eye' from the start to keep an eye on everything around him.
The Goblin Mage had gotten within 30 meters and was about to cast a spell at Al and the others.
'Magic Shock! Spasm!'
As Al turned around and cast his spell, the Goblin Mage's body shook in surprise. The spell it was trying to cast stopped.
"Michael! Take it down!"
At Al's command, Michael snapped back to reality, gripped his sword tightly, and ran toward the Goblin Mage.
Realizing its spell had been interrupted, the Goblin Mage tried to escape, but Michael, still under the effect of the 'Haste' spell, was much faster.
"Uryaaaah!!!"
With a loud shout, Michael raised his sword with both hands and swung down hard on the Goblin Mage's shoulder.
The Goblin Mage let out a desperate scream, "Gya gya gya!" as green blood sprayed out, and it fell to the ground.
"Phew, we did it, Michael!"
"Yeah! We did it! Thank you, thank you. Wait, what about the two?"
Michael rushed over to the two who were down. But Al raised the 'Floating Eye' to keep watch over their surroundings.
It seemed there were 4 or 5 goblins that had escaped the range of the 'Magic Sparks' spell, but aside from the attacking Goblin Mage, the others were just regular goblins that had run away.
For now, it seemed safe.
"Yes! They're both alive!"
Michael's happy voice echoed. Al couldn't help but smile. It was quite lucky that both of them were still alive.
"Michael, I'm glad. You were amazing. You did your job well, and thanks to you, I could cast the spell to take down the orc."
"Your magic is incredible. You really helped me. I'm so glad..."
Tears started to flow from Michael's eyes. He had the ability to do what was asked of him well.
The way he quickly took down the Goblin Mage at Al's command showed he had considerable potential as a warrior. However, he seemed to be quite emotional.
"Michael, I think it's safe now, but there might still be other barbarians around. I'll keep watch while I tend to the two of them. Can you head back to the village first, report the situation, and bring back some help?"
"Just me? Wouldn't it be faster for you to fly back?"
Al sighed.
"If there's even one more orc left and you come back, what will you do, Michael? Right now, the effects of 'Haste' and 'Shield' spells are still active, but..."
"Y-Yeah, I got it. I'm going."
Michael started running. The village was probably about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) away. It was out of 'Telepathy' range, but it wasn't too far to run. It would be easier for both the Levy merchant guild and the village if Michael took the lead.
Now, Michael said he was okay, but what about the other 2? Al had trained as a hunter since he was young, so he could at least do some first aid.
"Glee, please keep watching the surroundings.'
"Got it. Leave it to me."
Al murmured that and hurried to join the two.
