Volume 14 Chapter 7 'Piercing Spear' Spell Test
When Al arrived at Nora Village, many people had already gathered.
Not just Naresh, Lord Radyard, and Sigmund, but also their attendants, and familiar mercenaries from the Levy merchant guild like Desmond. There were also men who seemed to be from Baron Sanford, who had previously served Count Senet, and others wearing unknown black robes.
They might be magicians.
With so many people here, there must have been something planned from the start.
As Al walked toward the training ground, he noticed Desmond looking at him and calling out.
"Hey! Al, you made it!"
"There are so many people. What's happening today?"
When Al replied, Desmond looked puzzled.
"Everyone came because you said you would show us some magic."
"Huh?"
The 'Piercing Spear' spell was a secret spell of the Tempest Kingdom.
Was it really okay for someone to lend Al the spellbook?
"Don't look so confused. Oh, right. Everyone here knows that what spells you can use is a secret, so don't worry. I narrowed it down quite a bit. But still, this many people showed up. They all want to know what you can do since they might have to deal with Tempest magicians in the future. It could be a matter of life and death."
I see, the 'Piercing Spear' spell is a secret spell of the Tempest Kingdom.
So, they want to see its real power.
But, Baron Sanford was also there.
He belonged to the Tempest Kingdom.
Shouldn't he have seen it before? Next to him was a man in a black robe.
"Ah, Lord Sanford and Lord Zora, right? They were called by Sir Naresh. If no one knows the original spell's power, there's no way to evaluate it. Also, Lord Zora said that the magician from Sylvester Kingdom probably can't use a high-level spell like 'Piercing Spear,' so Sir Naresh seems a bit annoyed about that. Show them you can use it well."
"Are the two of them with Sir Naresh?"
"Yeah, he was a Baron in the Tempest Kingdom, but this time, he's serving as a knight. Of course, Sir Naresh will be officially knighted at the beginning of the year, so he will also be official from then."
Lord Sanford and Lord Zora... Is the one in the black robe Baron Zora?
He wants to ask a lot of things, but it feels like he can't talk to Desmond much since he is being watched.
Al hurried over to Naresh.
"Sir Naresh, sorry to keep you waiting."
"Thank you, Al. Everyone is looking forward to it."
"Seems like it."
It feels a bit like a show, but it can't be helped.
A man in a black robe approached Naresh.
He looked to be around 30 years old.
The hair was blonde and neatly styled, and the skin was very pale.
He had a handsome face and was about 180 centimeters (5'11") tall, quite thin.
Behind him were 2 men in robes following closely.
"Al, this is Lord Zora. He used to be the captain of the magician corps for the Count Senet family, but now, since I'm taking on the title of Baron Senet, he has offered to serve me. In the Sylvester Kingdom, there are knights, but no Magician Corps, and there's no title of magician noble, so he will be knighted instead."
When Naresh introduced Zora to Al, Zora lightly adjusted his hair with his slender fingers, bowed politely, and stared at Al for a moment before giving a slight smile.
It was unclear what he was thinking, but perhaps he was trying to see if Al was truly capable.
"Well then, Sir Naresh, shall we start with a test? Do you have a target in mind?"
"Yes, I dressed a wooden doll in armor."
Naresh said this and pointed to the middle of the training ground.
Indeed, there stood a doll made of straw with arms and legs attached to a wooden post, wearing metal armor.
It was the kind of metal armor that knights wear.
"Just to be sure, could Lord Sanford and Lord Zora check if the armor is not damaged or weakened? Also, I'd like to set up a few more targets next to it."
It would be annoying if later someone said that the armor was old and worn out.
Let's make sure to have it checked properly.
"Alright. Lord Sanford, Lord Zora, could you help with that? And if anyone else wants to check..."
Naresh's words made the two nod as they checked their armor.
Others, like Lord Radyard, also raised their hands.
While they were checking, Al set up several wooden sticks next to him and fixed round metal plates of different thicknesses, about 20 centimeters (8in) in diameter, onto them.
"The strength seems fine."
Waiting for Lord Sanford to report to Naresh on their behalf, Al stood 30 meters (98ft) away from the target.
"Alright, here I go. First, I'll cast the 'Magic Missile' spell for comparison."
Al stretched out his hand straight, palm open, aiming at the armor.
'Magic Missile'
Ten glowing arrows appeared in Al's hand and shot towards the target with great force.
A high-pitched sound rang out as they bounced off the metal armor and the metal target.
Lord Zora looked a bit surprised and was talking to the two robed men standing behind him.
It was good if he was impressed by the number ten.
"Next, I'll use the 'Piercing Spear' spell."
Al again stretched out his hand straight, palm open, aiming at the armor.
'Piercing Spear'
This time, 4 glowing lights, about the size of hand spears, appeared in Al's hand and flew towards the target with great speed.
A lower sound than the 'Magic Missile' echoed as one of the metal armors and one of the metal targets were pierced, while another target was stuck but stopped there, and the last target was not penetrated.
"Ohhh!"
Those watching around gasped in surprise.
"From what I've checked, if you use a normal spell, you can penetrate a 10mm (0.4in) iron plate. A 15mm (0.6in) plate will only get a small hole, and at 20mm (0.8in), you definitely can't penetrate it; it will just get a big dent. The thickness of metal armor is only about 5mm (0.2in), so it can be easily penetrated. Please confirm."
Al added this information. The metal plates they prepared were made from rusty iron scraps using the 'Soften Metal' spell, along with the 'Refine' and 'Extract' spells.
In the substance index, it was registered as "iron," with 3 types: "pure iron," "steel," and "cast iron."
Since there were no explanations in the index, they didn't know the differences or details, but after consulting with Glee and Malachi, he prepared several types made of "steel" with different thicknesses to measure the power.
Probably, a blacksmith would be able to judge this iron plate to some extent.
The people watching around were cautiously touching the armor and the metal targets Al had prepared, nodding their heads in understanding.
"I see, that's a terrifying spell. Normal armor is useless against it. However, making it that thick would be tough considering the overall weight. Maybe we can work on the curves of the armor or find a good way to use shields..."
Lord Radyard was deep in thought.
"Impressive, Al. You've already mastered it this much. With this, you might be able to fight against knights."
"I don't want to fight, though,"
Al shrugged at Naresh's words.
Next to them, Lord Zora was wide-eyed, frozen in surprise.
Seeing this, Naresh seemed a bit relieved and smiled lightly.
As the two were having their conversation, a commotion broke out in the direction of the village entrance.
Looking over, they saw a magnificent carriage stopped at the village entrance.
Seeing the emblem on the carriage, Naresh, Lord Radyard, and Lord Sanford exchanged glances.
"That's the emblem of the Tempest Kingdom, the Taggart family. Could it be Lady Nora? Lord Radyard, could you go take a look?"
