Volume 6 Chapter 11 Kilolizardman
The rocky riverbed was softly lit by the faint moonlight. On that riverbed, a large group of lizardmen was idly flipping over stones. Occasionally, they brought their hands to their mouths. They were probably finding and eating small bugs. In the center, there were 2 Kilolizardmen, taller than the others, with flashy spikes on their backs and shoulders, chatting loudly with the surrounding lizardmen.
And about 656 feet away ( 200 meters), on a slightly higher rocky area, 3 knights were hiding while holding the reins of their beloved horses, along with about ten attendants. They were Naresh, Lord Radyard, and Sigmund, along with their subordinates.
"Wow, there are so many of them..."
Lord Radyard whispered quietly, surprised. According to Al, there were supposed to be about 300, but seeing them in person, it looked like there were even more.
"Yeah, it seems like there are still some in the river too."
"I shudder to think we might have to charge in here without a plan. Is Al okay?"
Sigmund murmured with concern. Al was supposed to cast the 'Magic Tornado' spell from another location to confuse the barbarians, while the 3 knights, Naresh and the others, would assess the situation and charge in to defeat the two higher-ranked Kilolizardmen.
"He said he found a good spot. He mentioned he found a big crack between the rocks on the hillside over there. He was proud to say he would use the 'Illusion' spell to make it look like there was solid ground, turning it into a makeshift pitfall."
As Naresh pointed towards the gentle hills in the north, Lord Radyard smirked.
"Traps like that are just like a hunter's tricks. Well, either way, it will slow them down, and if they get distracted, that gives us a big chance."
While they were talking, a bluish light suddenly zipped through the air from the opposite direction, between where Naresh and the others were hiding and the lizardmen. The light flew straight towards 2 Kilolizardmen. The moment it hit the ground, a loud roaring sound like wind filled the air, and white light swirled out like a blooming flower.
The lizardmen were knocked down by the light's whirlwind, and stones from the riverbank flew around. Naresh and the others instinctively ducked their heads and covered their faces with their arms, staring at the scene. The white light's whirlwind raged for just a few seconds.
"Oh, 'Magic Tornado,' it looks intense at night."
Naresh muttered. He had seen it before, but seeing this spell in the dark made it even scarier. After the light settled, the two Kilolizardmen in the center were bloodied and staggering, while the other lizardmen around them were all blown away and lying on the ground. Many of the lizardmen caught a bit farther away were also injured and bleeding.
"Aaaaargh!!"
The Kilolizardman strained to shout and pointed towards the direction where the pale blue light had first appeared. It seemed that even among barbarians, there was some kind of language, but its meaning was not clear. However, upon hearing the Kilolizardman's shout, the nearby Lizardmen who could move all started running in that direction at once.
"We've taken down quite a few, more than expected. Al, just make sure to escape well..."
Naresh's words made Lord Radyard and Sigmund nod in agreement. The Lizardmen ran away, screaming loudly. Soon after, there were sounds like "Thud!" and "Crash!" along with their screams, suggesting something heavy had fallen. They must have fallen into the pit Al had mentioned. The three of them looked at each other and smiled.
Then, another pale blue light shot out, swirling towards the group of Lizardmen that were likely chasing Al.
"Alright, old man, Sigmund, let's go. Send 2 of the attendants to report to His Excellency Baron Oliver. We found a group of Lizardmen while scouting. The rest of the attendants will stay here."
Naresh and the others had not yet reported the discovery of the Barbarian group that Al found to Baron Oliver. Naresh himself had wanted to report it first, but Lord Radyard stopped him. The ones scouting with magic, like Wald, would not easily admit it, and that would just take more time. It was better to report after actually finding them, he convinced him. The ordered attendants hurriedly turned back the way they came.
Naresh watched them leave and stood up to mount his horse. After giving instructions, Lord Radyard and Sigmund also got on their horses. The 3 knights readied their spears and stared intently at the still-screaming Kilorizardmen.
"Charge!"
Naresh's voice rang out sharply.
* * *
Meanwhile, Al successfully cast the 'Magic Tornado' spell on the Lizardmen for the second time. He used 'Physical Boost' on himself and ran away with all his strength. The first time, he caught them off guard when they were gathered together, and the second time, he hit them while they were trying to take him down. He probably caught about 50 of them in total. Now, he wanted to shake off the Barbarians chasing him and hopefully join up with Naresh and the others.
The Lizardmen seemed to be more cautious this time, not gathering together as much after the second 'Magic Tornado' spell. Maybe they were scared, as they weren't chasing him as fast. Seeing this, Al grinned and quickly hid behind some cover.
'Conceal.'
Al quickly vanished from sight. He decided to retrace his steps, hoping to slip past the lizardmen after him to reach Naresh. It was risky, but he had just practiced a spell called 'Physical Boost' and wanted to impress everyone with his skills. However, he faced a challenge with the 'Conceal' spell. If he wasn't careful with his feet, he couldn't even push off the ground. As a result, he could only move at a fast walk. Plus, while using 'Conceal,' he couldn't cast any other spells without losing its effect.
As he glanced at the lizardmen running and shouting, Al headed toward the direction where the kilolizardmen were. Out of about 300 lizardmen, many were injured by the 'Magic Tornado' spell, caught in traps, and searching for Al in places where he wasn't. Things were going too well; he might soon hear cries of victory from those who had defeated the kilolizardmen. He couldn't help but feel hopeful.
'Ally, up!'
Suddenly, he heard Glee's voice. He instinctively looked up. There was a red-skinned goblin, a goblin mage, staring at him. He immediately sensed that they had noticed his 'Conceal.'
'Dispel Magic!'
'Magic Missile!'
The Goblin Mage tried to cancel Al's 'Conceal' spell at the same time Al launched a 'Magic Missile' at the Goblin Mage. From Al's palm, 9 arrows of pale blue light shot out in quick succession. There was no time to aim properly. Hoping to hit, Al crouched down close to a large rock at his feet. It was pretty dark around him, and the only one watching Al was probably the Goblin Mage. The Lizardmen nearby shouldn't be able to see well in the dark. If things went well, he might not be found.
Suddenly, there was a loud thud as something fell nearby. Al wanted to look, but he held back and recited the 'Conceal' spell again. He had practiced a lot, but if he panicked, he might mess up the spell.
'Conceal!'
...
His figure started to disappear. It seemed like he made it just in time. The nearby Lizardmen were shouting and looking around. Al let out a sigh of relief.
'Good job, Ally.'
Hearing Glee's voice, Al smiled and nodded. That was really close. If he had suddenly been discovered in the middle of enemies, he wouldn't have been able to escape.
Al slowly stood up. The Goblin Mage was lying on the ground nearby. That thud sound must have been the Goblin Mage falling. It was clear it was dead. At that moment, Al noticed the collar the Goblin Mage was wearing was shining, and there was something that looked like a crystal embedded in it. It looked a lot like the crystals that Glee and Malachi had.
Is it a crystal that holds an assistant? When Al reached out to touch it, his hand passed right through. While in 'Conceal' mode, no one can touch Al, but he also can't touch anyone. He wanted to confirm it by touching, but it was too risky to cancel and reactivate the spell. He thought he might have to collect the corpse of this goblin mage later when he heard a loud voice in the distance.
"I, Naresh, have defeated the Kilorizardman!"
It seemed he was too late. He also heard Sigmund's shout that he had taken down another Kilorizardman. Whether the lizardmen understood those words or not, they were excitedly shouting and many of them started running toward the river.
I have to join them quickly... Al felt a bit anxious and hurried toward the direction of the two voices.
