Volume 13 Chapter 4 Baroness Tabasa and Glee's New Feature

Volume 13 Chapter 4 Baroness Tabasa And Glee's New Feature

After the two returned, Al hurried back to his room and contacted Patricia through 'Telepathy' using the Ring of Pact.

They talked almost every night through 'Telepathy' and never ran out of things to say. Just yesterday, Patricia shared that her bean plants had sprouted, while Al told her about the people he met in the border city of Parker. Time flew by, and although they wanted to keep chatting, it made it hard to do other things, so they decided to talk at set times. But this time was an emergency. They had no choice.

Normally, the 'Telepathy' spell has a limited range. You can only talk to someone unknown if you can see them, and with someone you know, it's only about a kilometer apart. But with this magic tool, they had never had trouble connecting. It was amazing! Al wanted to figure out how it worked, but he didn't know how right now.

'Sorry for suddenly contacting you. I have something I want to ask...'

'Yeah, but it's rare for you to call during the day. What's up?'

 'Do you know Baroness Tabasa?'

As soon as Al mentioned Baroness Tabasa' name, Patricia's mood changed suddenly.

'Of course, I know her. She's like my mother. Is she still alive?'

Her voice was a bit shaky. She might be crying. It seemed like she was really happy to hear that she was alive.

'After the castle fell, she escaped to the border city of Parker and is now under Naresh's protection. She got seriously hurt while escaping and has been recovering here. She also heard that Patricia died in the borderlands, and now she's so weak she can hardly eat. To make things worse, her husband, His Excellency Baron, has passed away, leaving her all alone with no one to help her.'"

'Is that so? Her husband was with my grandfather and uncle... But it's good that she managed to survive alone. I really want to meet her. If she's by herself, can we bring her here?'

As Al, he wants to meet her and see what she's like, but since it's Patricia, it might be okay if they don't have a close relationship.

'I'll talk to Naresh in the evening, and depending on that, I'll mention it. I heard there's a ten-year-old child taking care of her, so she might come along too.'

'Please do. I'll also discuss it with Joanna and Malachi.'

For now, that's enough about Baroness Tabasa. As for the situation with Baron Sanford's father, it is too big for Al to handle. There's still time until evening, and he wants to keep talking a bit more. He wonder what kind of person Baroness Tabasa is.

'Al, I'm sorry. We're going to butcher a pig soon...'

Speaking of which, Patricia mentioned feeling nervous about that last night.

'That's right. Well then, see you tonight. I'll be having dinner with Naresh, so I might be a little late.'

 'Got it.'

Al cut off the 'Telepathy' with Patricia.

 'Did Patricia know Mrs. Tabasa?'

As soon as the 'Telepathy' ended, Glee asked. She shares senses with Al, but she can't hear 'Telepathy,' so she's curious.

"Yeah, she said she's like a mother to her. She wanted to take her in if possible. She was so happy that she cried a little."

'I see. That's good to hear.'

Taking a breath, Al decided to look at the spellbook he just got until evening. He cleaned his bed and spread out the three volumes he bought at the open-air market. Volume 2 had the 'Sleep' spell, and Volume 1 had the telekinesis spell--both spells he had wanted for a long time. If he could learn them, they would be really useful. Just looking at the spellbook made him smile.

However, he noticed the cover was pretty damaged, and some symbols inside were peeling off, making it hard to learn from them. But in some places, he thought he could still figure them out. It seemed possible to interpret them in case he found a better-preserved one later.

"If I combine the 'Sleep' spell... it might work? But I might be missing symbols for the telekinesis spell."

As Al was thinking about how to do the Interpretation (Decipher) task, Glee suddenly said, 'What if we combine them?' What could that mean? Al instinctively gripped the blue crystal pendant around his neck.

 "What do you mean?"

'Well, the 'Sleep' spell has 2 volumes, right? If we compare both, we might be able to fill in the missing parts...'

I see. But can he really learn from a patched-up spellbook like that?

'I added various functions (modules) at the research tower. There were also useful functions (modules) for deciphering spellbooks. If Ally allows it, I can try using them...'

At that, Glee hesitated a bit before continuing.

'But, you know, that function (module) includes some experimental support functions (sub-modules) that aren't guaranteed to be completely safe. Of course, they have different levels of risk, and for Interpretation (Decipher), the risk is considered low, but it's not 0.'

"What do you mean by that?"

Is something scary going to happen? Like summoning a magic beast...? Al asked anxiously.

'According to the explanation of the support function (sub-module), it directly affects the user's eyes and nerves, influencing not just sight but also touch and smell, creating an "Illusion" that only that person can perceive.'

"Is it like a window that appears in the view only the caster can see when using the 'Floating Eye' spell?"

 'Maybe.'

Al usually use the 'Floating Eye' spell, but he has never felt any danger from it. If he had to say, sometimes the window blocks his view while he's using it.

"I don't know what the danger is, but it seems mostly safe. So, if using it helps me learn this 'Sleep' spell, my conclusion is clear. Glee, let's try it."

'Okay, got it. Can you spread the second volume of the spellbook out for me?'

Al did as told and spread the second volume of the spellbook on the bed so that it was parallel. The bed was too small to fit both completely, but he aligned them as best as he could. After waiting for a bit, the surface of the two spellbooks blurred for a moment, and then both spellbooks looked clear.

 "Huh? What is this?"

'I'm showing you only the good parts combined. You see both spellbooks because they both exist there. If it's too complicated, I can use the memory of the image before you placed them there or the wrinkles in the sheets to make it look like only one is there. What do you want to do?'

Al was confused by Glee's explanation and asked several questions, but he still didnt fully understand. However, he did get that with Glee's function, even if a spellbook was damaged, he could combine usable parts from multiple copies to learn from them.

"Anyway, this means I might be able to learn the 'Sleep' spell, right? So, I can put off the details for now. Let's get started on interpreting the symbol..."

Saying this, Al tried to take out the bundle of parchment where he always kept the important symbols from his backpack.

'That's enough! I'll display what I know on the spellbook below.'

As soon as Glee said that, a large part of the spellbook at the bottom turned light green, and the explanations on the parchment appeared in the same font. Usually, Al and Glee would compare the parchment with the spellbook using the 'Illusion' spell, and Glee quickly did that too. Only six symbols were left uncolored.

"I see, so even without using the 'Illusion' spell, Glee can show what I remembers from what I can see."

'That's right. If we use the support function, we can do that. I didn't use it before because it wasn't completely safe, but since I got Ally's permission, I decided to try it.'

A little danger wouldn't stop Al from learning a new spell. He nodded in agreement.

"Hey, is there maybe another new function or module?"

He wondered if there were other things that could help with learning spells or adventures.

'Is there anything else useful for learning spells? Most of the features are just for my own convenience. I've been able to remember what I've seen and felt through Al, and now I can use that information better than before. I also added some features while consulting with Mr. Malachi, but there are many functions I can use that he cannot. Especially, there are a lot of new features that came after Sir Tempest passed away, but it seems only I can use them.'

By the way, Al thinks Glee was made after Malachi as an assistant device. He wonders if there's a big difference.

"What can that new big one do?"

'Well, it said that downloading it would take a whole day, so I haven't tried it yet. Plus, the description mentioned something about gaining a groundbreaking new personality, which is scary... But if I do that, I might be able to use spells...'

Al stills think Glee feels pretty human. But if Glee can use spells, that would be amazing. If both Al and Glee can use attack magic, their power would simply double.

"Being able to use spells is awesome!"

'But it's scary. What does a new personality mean?'

Now that she mentions it, that is true. It might be better to think about it a bit more. It might be wise to be careful with things that Malachi can't use. Glee is already an essential part of Al's life. Changing that is frightening.

"Got it. For now, I think the new feature we added (download) is really cool. If you notice anything, you can whisper it to me like before, or just show it to me directly. Thanks!"

'Yeah, I understand. I feel like if we get creative, we can do even more things. If I think of something, I'll ask you again.'

Al wonders what new things they can do with Glee. Al felt a bit excited as he started learning the 'Sleep' spell from the spellbook that Glee showed him.
