Volume 10 Chapter 3 Escape Or Fight
Al was scared of being found, so he quickly canceled the 'Floating Eye' spell and made his eyes disappear. He turned to the two of them.
"A magician is coming here with the 'Floating Eye.' They should arrive in a few minutes. We need to escape quickly!"
Joanna looked surprised at Al's words.
"If it's just one person, can't we fight back? The 'Floating Eye' can only see; it can't use magic from there, right? Even if the princess can't fight, if you and I work together, we can handle one magician..."
"Uh? But..."
Al wanted to argue that he was still a beginner, but he stopped. He had learned the 'Fly' spell, 'Magic Missile,' 'Illusion,' and of course, 'Light.' He had mastered the magic he admired from his grandfather, who was also his mentor. If he called himself a beginner now, his grandfather would laugh at him.
"Okay, I get it. You're right."
Al said this while tightly gripping the Glee assistant device hanging from his chest. If he thought creatively, he could fight. Of course, he didn't want to fight a human, but the one chasing them was an assassin targeting Patricia's life. Joanna was right. They should try to defeat the enemy and reduce their numbers.
'Floating Eye'
Al used the spell again and floated it above himself. I wonder how far the magician who just 'Fly' went. Al stared at the direction where the Tempest Kingdom's spies were likely riding in their carriage with his 'Floating Eye.' The magician was flying slowly about 2m away. Maybe he was checking the terrain.
"There are too many obstacles, so searching from the sky has its limits. They must be using 'Detect Magic.' Our magic tools are probably good targets for them."
Joanna and Patricia nodded. Al picked up a stick and drew a little distance between the enemy magician and Patricia on the ground.
"If the range of that is the same as the magic tool, it's 50m (� 164 ft). The effective range of 'Magic Missile' and 'Dispel Magic' is 30m (� 98.4 ft). Since we know the direction they're coming from, you two should hide nearby with the magic tools, and I'll wait 30m ahead to ambush them."
Al drew a circle to mark himself between the enemy magician and Patricia, adding the distance.
"Detect Magic" is important. If the enemy magician misses where Al is hiding, they will be only 20 meters (� 65.62 ft) away from him, which is within the effective range of magic. Al can't measure the distance perfectly, but knowing the distance is basic for a magician, and a 10m (� 32.8 ft) error is acceptable.
In Al's case, if he uses spells like "Magic Missile" or "Dispel Magic," he can cast them from over 50 meters (� 164 ft) away. However, extending that range is like knowing the "Fly" spell, which the enemy magician shouldn�t discover yet. Battles between magicians are all about tricking each other, so it�s best to keep your secrets hidden.
'What should I do? "Detect Magic" will react!'
Glee asked. Al talked about Malachi, but he hasn't mentioned Glee to Patricia. He hesitated a bit, but he didn't have time to think. he had to tell her anyway.
"Let's have Patricia hold onto you."
'Is it okay to talk about me?'
"Yeah."
Saying that, Al took off the pendant from his chest, which was Glee's assistant device. Patricia and Joanna looked at him with puzzled expressions. Next, he removed the magic bag from his waist and handed both items to Patricia.
"Patricia, these two will react to 'Detect Magic,' so please hold onto them. The magic bag and this are my assistant device. Inside might be my sister, Glee, and it's also a keepsake from my grandpa."
"Is this a keepsake from your sister and grandfather?"
"I'm sorry. I don't have time to explain properly. Can we talk later?"
Al said this and forcefully handed 2 items to Patricia. Patricia nodded and carefully accepted them. Al then canceled his 'Magic Sense' and 'Sensory Boost' spells. The 'Floating Eye' reacted, but since he confirmed that the caster wasn't responding, he decided not to cancel it. The Ring of Pact also didn't react to 'Detect Magic', so he kept it on. For now, Al should no longer respond to 'Detect Magic'.
"Okay, hide here for a bit. I'll get closer to the enemy."
The two nodded, and Al quickly started moving. A few minutes had already passed while they talked. The ground was sloped, making it hard to position himself exactly, but Al managed to find a bush that should be hidden from the sky and slipped into it. The enemy magician was now about a kilometer away.
However, Al noticed something strange. The magician, who he thought was flying toward him, was slightly off course.
Al recalled the terrain he saw from above. The direction the magician was flying should lead to Roland Village. There were several pioneer villages, but the closest was Roland. They probably didn't know the area well, but they must have realized that the south side of the pioneer city, Lester, was dangerous. Were they trying to block their escape route by heading there?
Al let out a big sigh. Even though he had set up a good ambush, the plan unfortunately failed. However, it seemed likely that the enemy had no way to find out where Patricia was. This was good news.
After watching the magician flying for a while and confirming it was heading towards Roland Village, not here, Al returned to where Patricia and the others were.
