Volume 3 Chapter 9 Spellbook Seller
"Hello."
"Welcome!"
The vendor Al spoke to was a plump woman who looked to be in her 40s. Previously, he had learned about a suspicious woman named Carmilla, but this was a different person, not the old lady he had heard about.
"Um, what is this?"
Al pointed at a black sphere that glowed pale blue due to the effect of Magic Sense, being careful not to touch it. Some magic tools could have cursed effects, and just touching them could be dangerous.
"That? Oh, that's a magic tool. Is it your first time seeing one?"
The woman vendor picked up the black sphere naturally and showed it to Al. The sphere looked perfectly round with 2 vertical cuts on its surface.
"No, I know about magic tools. I was just wondering what kind it is."
"Oh, you know about them? Are you saying you're a magician? You don't look like one..."
The vendor looked surprised and tilted her head while staring at Al's face, but she quickly nodded and smiled.
"What is this magic tool? You're lucky. This was found by my acquaintance in an underground ruin last week. We're still researching its effects, so I don't know yet, but it was discovered in a huge treasure vault. It must have some amazing effects. I can sell it to you for 10 gold coins. What do you think? You won't get another chance like this!"
Al shook his head with a wry smile at the shopkeeper's explanation. There's no way something worth 10 gold coins would be sold like this. Seeing his reaction, she shrugged her shoulders.
"Okay, okay, it's a joke. All that stuff about it being found last week is a lie. But it is a magic item, for real. If you want to find out what kind of magic item it is, how about buying it for 10 silver coins?"
Does that mean she doesn't know what kind of magic item it is? While thinking about how her story keeps changing, Al decided to continue the conversation. Maybe this woman deals with spellbooks too.
"If we can talk about the Garbage scroll, then I might consider that magic item."
When Al mentioned the Garbage scroll, the shopkeeper tilted her head slightly. Then she looked around before turning back to Al. She held out a black sphere in one hand and gestured for payment with the other.
So she wants him to buy it as a fee for information. Al thought he should have haggled a bit more, but reluctantly showed a large silver coin from his wallet. The shopkeeper snatched the coin and pushed the black sphere toward Al.
"So, what kind of Garbage scroll are you looking for?"
"Anything I don't remember yet. But it depends on the condition and price."
"Wow, that's a nice offer. Have you learned the Magic Missile spell yet?"
Al nodded in response to the shopkeeper's question. She let out an impressed "Oh."
"Since you learned the Magic Missile spell, how about the Open Lock spell?"
In places like this, it seems there are certain forbidden spells and standard ones to look for. The female shopkeeper asked, but Al shook his head again.
"I've already learned that too. Do you have the Sleep spell or the Paralysis spell, or maybe the Fly spell?"
This time, the shopkeeper lightly shook her head.
"I don't have anything in good condition that I can recommend. How about the 'Spray' spell? I can let it go for one gold coin. It's our first deal, so this should be fair for both of us."
Al had heard about the 'Spray' spell at the spellbook shop in the capital. It was a 2nd Tier spell that sprayed ink, and it wasn't very popular or expensive. He remembered thinking that if you sprayed lemon juice instead of ink, it might work as a way to blind someone. Of course, he wouldn't know if that really worked until he tried it. And it was just one gold coin. Even though that didn't sound too expensive, it definitely wasn't something he could find for just one coin. Since it was a spellbook without any guarantees, he had no idea about the market price. From her tone, it seemed like she wanted to start with a small deal.
"Alright. Make sure to give me good service."
After thinking for a moment, Al nodded big. He took out one gold coin. The shopkeeper smiled brightly and pulled out a spellbook from somewhere. He had no idea where she got it from. It suddenly appeared in her palm.
"Of course. I want to make a lot of good deals too. I'll look for the items you want, but they're all pretty popular. So don't get your hopes up too much."
She handed the spellbook to Al after receiving money from him. Al checked the first part of the spellbook right there. It was indeed a spray spell. At least it didn't seem like a complete scam.
"Ah, thanks a lot. By the way, what's your name? Do you always work here?"
"Ah, my name is Lara. I don't just work here, but if you ask about the magic tool shop Lara, someone will probably tell you. There are some who jokingly call me Auntie Lara, but don't you dare copy that."
I see. Al remembered Carmilla's seductive smile. They must know each other. They were probably just joking around, but at least it seemed like she wasn't lying. That means this spellbook might be worth it. A spray spell... Al carefully put the spellbook into his backpack.
