Volume 3 Chapter 2 Big-Mouthed Lizard Hunting Sequel
Al carefully made his way down the steep slope until he was near the water, casting his bait as far as possible into the river. He kept the bait moving on the water's surface, hoping to lure a Big-Mouthed Lizard.
The river, at this point still narrow before the heavy rains of the season, stretched about 40 meters across (131.2 feet). On the opposite bank, wetlands stretched out, with water birds scattered along the edge, their calls occasionally breaking the silence.
After a few moments, Al noticed movement--but it wasn't the lizard he had been waiting for. Instead, a school of small carnivorous fish, known as "Pira," had been attracted to the smell of blood. These fish, each about 10 to 20 cm ( 4 to 8 inches) long, darted after the bait. Concerned that they'd devour it before the lizard could arrive, Al moved the rod quickly, trying to keep the bait away from the fish. The Pira chased after it, but then, just as suddenly as they had appeared, the school vanished.
Al scanned the water's surface and soon spotted what he had been waiting for: the nose and eyes of a Big-Mouthed Lizard emerging nearby. He whistled sharply to signal Orson and began moving the bait to keep the lizard's attention. The creature reacted, following the bait, and Al slowly started retreating up the slope, drawing it closer.
A few moments later, he heard a series of short whistles--Orson's signal that he was in position. Al quickly spun the rod, wrapping the line around it while retreating faster up the slope. The Big-Mouthed Lizard followed him, its long body moving with surprising speed in the water. Just as Al reached the top, the lizard crawled onto the shore, its massive form looming behind him. It was about 4 meters ( 13.1 feet) long, even bigger than they had planned for, but there was no time to hesitate.
Al sprinted toward the goblin's corpse, thinking he'd managed to attract the lizard's full attention. The massive creature followed, bounding up the slope with frightening speed. But as Orson had predicted, it stopped suddenly, drawn to the goblin's body. The plan was working.
Cautiously, the lizard approached the corpse, its massive jaws opening slightly as it sniffed the air. Meanwhile, Orson had successfully positioned himself between the lizard and the river, quietly moving into place. Al, hiding in the shadows, watched, ready for the next move. The lizard finally took the bait, sinking its teeth into the goblin's corpse. As soon as he saw this, Orson raised his left hand, signaling Al. Hidden and steadying himself, Al stood up slowly, taking aim for what was to come next.
'Magic Missile'
The large lizard was moving its head a lot to eat the meat, and all 3 Magic Missiles missed their target, bouncing off its tough hide. The large lizard glared at Al with clear hostility. However, in being so wary of Al, the large lizard had let its guard down behind it.
'Piercing' Thrust Spear Technique--Penetration
Orson seized the opportunity, stumbling closer to the large lizard's back despite his fatigue. With both hands, he thrust his spear into the soft spot at the base of its leg, driving it deep into the creature's body. The lizard let out a loud cry in response.
"I did it!"
Orson's voice echoed as the large lizard swung its tail at him, but it was too weak to throw him off. After a brief struggle, the lizard lay still. Stepping on its body, Orson pulled out the spear, causing blood to ooze from the wound.
"Mr. Orson, you did it!"
"Yeah, Al, we did it."
The two of them bumped their fists together to celebrate each other.
"Mr. Orson's spear attack was amazing. It was my first time seeing a fighting technique."
A fighting technique is like a special move used with weapons. It seems that by repeating the same form many times, you can create a strong effect with these techniques.
"Is that so? You distracted it for me. Thanks to you, I was able to finish it off."
Orson looked pleased as well.
"It's huge..."
Al couldn't help but mutter as he looked at the dead lizard, which measured over 4 meters long (13.12 feet) and likely weighed more than 400 kilograms (882 pounds). He slowly traced the tough, hard skin that had withstood the Magic Missile.
"Yeah, I wonder if we can carry it... Let's try it for now. If we can get it to the cart, it should be big enough to fit."
Orson tried to lift the large lizard a bit to tie a rope around it, but it didn't budge at all.
"Wait a second. Can I try a strengthening spell?"
Al asked Orson.
"Yeah, go ahead."
'Physical Boost'--Enhanced Strength.
"Hey, that magic... isn't it something the knights use?"
Al touched Orson's body and tried to cast a spell, but nothing happened.
"Wait, what's wrong?"
"Well, I'm still in training. My success rate is low."

After chanting a few times, power surged through Orson's body.
"Wow, this is amazing! My body feels so light!"
"How about now?"
Orson tried to lift the corpse of a giant lizard. The massive body, which he couldn't budge before, now felt like it could be lifted.
"I think I can do it!"

Al used the same spell on himself. This time, it seemed to work on the second try.
"Okay, Mr. Orson, you grab that. Let's tie it up first. Do you think we can carry it like this?"
"Yeah, I think we can manage to get it to the cart. If we can take it to the dealer, we could make a lot of money!"
"And we have to give Lippi a nice tip too."
Al and Orson smiled happily and shook hands firmly.
