Volume 6 Chapter 30 The Sound Of The Azure Monk Staff
It was as if the main actor had made a grand entrance on stage, and I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in surprise. The subordinates were kneeling on one knee, waving their hands in a weird manner, and appealing to Rouza's arrival. I thought they were strict, but maybe they're more carefree than I thought.
"Hey, what's taking you so long!"
"Hahaha! Good job, Black Blade! I didn't think I'd be late, but I guess I was wrong!"
Rouza responded to my shout with a cheerful laugh. As he appeared, the killing intent that had been quietly lurking in the shadows suddenly surged. It was as if he didn't even notice them, and the attackers charged towards him with their swords drawn.
"This is quite a good spot. Let's do this during the introductions."
Rouza lifted the corner of his mouth, tapped the ground with the butt end of his monk staff, and the subordinates scattered to take their positions. They then charged towards the attackers.
The once-quiet alleyway had turned into a chaotic battlefield. Clashing swords echoed everywhere, and intense killing intent and sparks flew back and forth.
"Um... what's going on here?"
Kyunei looked confused, and to be honest, I was feeling the same way. But Mikage and Aina were fixedly staring at Rouza. Unlike us, they seemed to have some idea about what was going on.
"Getsuya, you should go too."
"Is that okay?"
"Well, even if they're from another country, there's no need to disturb the innocent civilians. Let's end this quickly before it gets too noisy at night."
"According to Your Will."
Rouza bowed to acknowledge the order, and Getsuya returned the bow with his left hand resting on the hilt at his waist. He sprinted forward, accelerating rapidly, and even from a distance, it was as if he might disappear from sight.
One of the attackers, who had been fighting the guards, noticed Getsuya's approach. He tried to retreat, but the White Fox increased his speed and closed in on the attacker. In the next instant, he struck, and the attacker fell behind him, spewing blood. This was truly the epitome of drawing one's sword.
Next, 3 more attackers charged from different directions. It seemed they had judged that they couldn't win one-on-one. Even to an amateur's eyes, their movements seemed coordinated as they targeted Getsuya.
"Inexperienced."
Getsuya stopped, and a flash of silver light illuminated the area. The 3 attackers fell to the ground simultaneously.
From then on, it was almost as if Getsuya was the only one on the battlefield. He launched a furious assault, and anyone who dared to approach was easily cut down by his incredible sword speed.
As Mikage had said, the attackers were by no means weak. Their movements, which assumed a group battle, were something even an outsider like me could recognize. However, no matter how skillful their teamwork was, they couldn't reach Getsuya. Everything was simply cut down by the shimmering silver light.
"Brother, it seems you're not holding back this time either."
Mikage's grip on the hilt tightened, filled with power. Compared to when we had fought in the forest, hiding theor true identities, Getsuya now showed no mercy.
The attackers fell one after another, starting from Rouza's appearance. While we maintained a minimum level of caution, we simply watched as they fell.
'Whoa, it's over!'
"Huh? Ah, Rouzaaa!"
Gram's stunned exclamation prompted my shout.
As one of the people Getsuya had cut down was about to get back up, they suddenly sprang towards Rouza. Getsuya noticed right away, but even if he gave chase now, the attacker would reach Rouza first.
"Heh, looks like you've outsmarted Getsuya. That's quite a feat for a worthless bunch like you."
Rouza was still calm, even though the blade was closing in on him. He stroked his chin, looking at the attacker with a mixture of interest and admiration.
"Damn it, Gram!"
'Just wait, I'm sure it'll be fine.'
"What are you talking about--."
I held the black spear (Gram) upside down, ready to throw it, but Gram was being really laid-back. Its nonchalant tone was so unexpected that I stopped moving too.
In the meantime, the attacker's blade finally reached Rouza and was about to strike.
"Enchant: Freeze!"
--The azure monk staff rang out with a clear, crisp sound.
"--What the...?!"
The sword's tip was about to pierce Rouza, but it suddenly stopped just short, as if someone had given it a slight push. It was clear to everyone that this was not what the attacker had intended.
"My neck is not something I'd give away so easily to assassins like you. Give up."
The attacker Rouza was talking to was trapped, with most of their body encased in a semi-transparent object that restricted their movements completely. But that wasn't all--all the attackers in the room, whether they were standing or fallen, were trapped in the same way.
"Ice magic?! But the scale is way too large for a chantless incantation--!"
Aina's eyes widened in surprise. She had used magic to seal the room's door, but this was clearly a different story.
However, Aina's reaction was irrelevant to me, as I had already reached a different conclusion.
This isn't a type of magic.
'Ah, that's right. It's the power of that azure monk staff (Touga).'
I've got my black spear (Gram).
Reed's got her snake belly sword (Slay).
Our weapons, imbued with a will, possess abilities that are similar yet different from magic. In other words, Gram, which recognizes the azure monk staff (Touga) as a kin, must also have some kind of ability.
That's this... the "Freeze" that affects a wide area.
