Volume 11 Chapter 24 Kyrie Talks About Her Father
We were led by the Ice Bird to the rooftop, and Kyrie, who was also led by the Ice Bird, was walking towards us from the other side.
"Whoa! Wade-chan! Big welcome☆."
Kyrie ran towards us with a big smile on her face. Then, they said "Let's do a high-five for our reunion!" and held out their hand, so I high-fived them back.
"Yeah, you too! High-five☆."
"Uh, yeah... Wade, who's this?"
"This is Kyrie, my ally. Kyrie, this is Gyurvi, who just helped me out."
"Hmm? Nice to meet you, Kyrie."
"Likewise, nice to meet you, Gyurvii!"
The two of them seemed to get along pretty well. Both of them are good communicators, and I was relieved to see that.
"By the way, Kyrie? Were you also affected by the Domain Control? No, I mean, since the Circus's terrain and the Demon King's army base terrain got mixed up, that's what happened, right?"
"Yeah, that's right! And for me, as long as I know where Papa is, I can use all sorts of tricks to change the time and find him!"
I was impressed by Kyrie's explanation, going "Wow" in my mind. As expected of a family member. They seem like they can do it properly.
Then, the Ice Bird chirped and started guiding us again. Probably, there's someone from the Toxy unit waiting for us ahead.
"Let's go that way. Alright, let's move out."
With me leading the way, the 3 of us started walking on the rooftop, our footsteps light and quick. Since all 3 of us have high physical abilities, we jumped and dodged the demons fighting on the ground as we moved.
"And, Papa? Kyrie, what's going on? Are you planning to betray your father?"
So, Gyurvi raised an eyebrow there. With a dubious expression, he asked Kyrie, who they were meeting for the first time.
However, Kyrie didn't seem to care about that much.
"Hey! It's not about betraying Papa, but more like... surpassing Papa? Something like that? I want to reassure you?"
I hadn't heard that kind of talk before, so I called out to Kyrie.
"It's a long way off, so tell me about it. Dancing and eating your father without a grudge is a rare story even in this hell, isn't it?"
"Uh, yeah... I guess so. If it's Wade and the others, I can tell them..."
Kyrie started talking, as if recalling memories.
It seems that Kyrie is a quite long-lived demon.
The start of their memory was in a distant cell. There, Kyrie was with small demon friends, similar to themselves.
Kyrie didn't understand anything, but thought they were powerless and couldn't do anything. So, they escaped from the cell in their small body and became the leader of the small demons that came out.
And then they devoured them.
They ate everything and made it their own power.
That's how Kyrie recovered some knowledge and power.
They were originally caught in that place, but the reason was unknown. They divided themselves to escape from the cell. Everyone there was a split personality of mine.
However, the fundamental knowledge didn't seem to be in the split personalities they had eaten. Anyway, they thought they had to escape and survive, so Kyrie kept moving around different places.
So, after experiencing many hardships in the countryside, I finally arrived at this city, Demon King Castle, and its circus.
"The circus used to be near the bazaar, you know. Yeah, it was tough for the poor."
In this harsh environment, Kyrie managed to survive somehow. Luckily, they could fight a bit, so they were doing a bodyguard-like job for the circus.
One day, a demon with incredible charisma appeared at the circus.
He had a gentle personality, and despite being a demon, he was kind and gentle, never arousing suspicion or contempt. Kyrie heard that this demon was someone who would open his heart to others.
I want to meet him once. That was Kyrie's simple thought.
"So, I quit my job and went to see that demon. And then... what can I say? Ah, we're the same. I thought we were similar, you know?"
It seemed that demon, Chiero, was the same.
"'Want to come with me?' he asked, and I was overjoyed. I felt like I'd found a place to belong. I finally reached my goal."
Leader Chiero was kind. He always looked out for her. Chiero accepted that joyfully. Before she knew it, Kyrie and Chiero had become like family.
But a demon's happiness never lasts long. Chiero started to act strange somewhere.
"Papa said that everything had become pointless."
Everything had become pointless. That was the beginning of the demon's decline, the early stages of saltification.
So they were worried. Kyrie was worried too, of course, as was Chiero.
Kyrie put a lot of effort into Chiero's acrobatic performances in the circus.
"When I first showed Papa my act, Papa was super happy and praised me. So, I thought that if I got even better, I could cure Papa's boredom."
But boredom is a terrifying poison for demons. Eternal life is invaded by it, and loses its meaning.
That's how Chiero went crazy.
"I've come up with a great new act!" Chiero said, expanding Domain Control. He took in many demons, brainwashed them, and turned them into circus members. Because of that, he even ended up fighting against the Demon King's army.
Kyrie laughed and continued.
"'Papa, you're amazing, aren't you?!' I thought."
Kyrie spoke as if that was the end of the story.
"The ordinary acts were getting more and more intense and interesting. Papa's circus was getting more exciting, even fighting against the Demon King's army. I was totally absorbed in it."
The problem was what happened after that.
In other words, after reaching the peak of intensity, boredom came back again.
"We didn't know what to do."
Kyrie said.
"The acts were more interesting than before, but it was no good. Papa said he'd seen enough of everything. No matter what we did, it wasn't interesting."
As time went on, Chiero stopped showing up anywhere. Even Kyrie couldn't meet with him properly.
Is this how it's going to end up, Kyrie thought. Is this how it's going to be, never able to meet again? If things continue like this, Chiero will turn into salt, won't it?
"I don't like that kind of thing."
Kyrie thought. So, Kyrie decided to eat Chiero.
"I'll surpass Papa. I'll make the circus even more amazing, and I'll become even more amazing too. I want to show Papa the figure I've become."
Kyrie wanted to surpass their father, inherit their great legacy, and make it even bigger. To do that, Kyrie would eat the leader, Chiero. Or rather, Kyrie would eat Chiero in order to surpass their father.
"If I eat Papa, the boredom will definitely recede, and the time until we turn into salt will stretch out. I'm sure――I'm sure I'm a part of Papa. That's why it'll be a repayment of kindness."
When you trace it back, we're the same demon. Even if our paths, abilities, and knowledge are different, we should still have the same core.
So, I'm sure this method will make Chiero and Papa happy.
Kyrie said so.
"That's why I'll eat Papa. I'll repay the kindness of giving me a place to belong. I'll live together with Papa from now on. That's how I'll make the circus bigger... That's what I want."
Kyrie is a demon. That's why their common sense is different from humans. Their moral sense is different too. They might not even blink at the weak, and their cruelty is chilling.
But on the other hand, Kyrie certainly has a sense of family affection. I respect that one point.
"Yeah, that's in line with our goal too. Let's take down Leader Chiero together."
"...There are a lot of things to consider, but you're a dutiful kid. We can't just leave you hanging."
"Alrighty☆, good luck, you two!"
Kyrie asked for a high-five again. I responded, and we moved forward to gather information about Chiero.
