Volume 11 Chapter 22 Broken Sur
Sur had endured the training halfway because he wanted to be praised like an older brother or sister.
'Sur! You're really useless! Slow! You can't even bring out a fraction of your sorcery power!'
Father scolded Sur, beating him mercilessly, and pushing him to his limits during the training.
Sur was killed instantly, but since he was ordered to set the training area as his revival point, he revived immediately and was blown away again by the massive fist.
'You piece of trash! When will you ever...'
'Aaaaahhh!'
Sur countered the fist with his sword in an instant, then counterattacked his father. Father showed a momentary disturbance, but took advantage of the physical difference and experience to seal Sur's movements.
The so-called training Sur received was like that. In this Nilfheim, it was a direct fight against Rutgal, the strongest Demon King army Commander-in-chief, aside from the Demon King himself.
He died numerous times. There was no day he didn't die. All other training was prohibited, and he spent his days getting beaten by his father.
'Sur's still the same. So incompetent. Why don't you learn from your brother?'
'Sur, try a bit harder. Then you can train with us.'
His brother and sister would say such things. So Sur would reply, "Yes... I'll work harder, brother, sister."
The truth was, the two were just spoiling him.
Or perhaps―――Sur was just placed in a harsh environment that was unbearable during the training.
His mother, the witch who believed in him, wasn't so sweet to him, Sur. She didn't starve him to death, but that's all. He wasn't someone she spoiled.
As he reflect on my past, he thinks...
There was never a chance for him to be loved as a family member from the start.
Considering others' feelings, hesitating, and all that meant nothing...
A strong wind blew on the Rainbow Bridge, Bifrost.
He thinks about it. Domain Control. Specifically, about the one used by Commander-in-Chief Chiero, who messed up this place.
Commander-in-Chief Chiero's Domain Control was powerful, but aside from having a wide-range recognition obstruction effect and terrain recognition obstruction effect, it might be a weak Domain Control in terms of dominance.
That's why his Bifrost almost completely dominated the surrounding space. It's almost like a Domain Control without any opposition.
So, he gazes at the enemy in front of him, Commander-in-Chief Rutgal. An opponent he can no longer think of as his father.
"You...! You're...Sur...?! Is that really Sur...?!"
Rutgal's eyes widened, and he looked like he was at a loss, his teeth clenched in frustration. He pointed his sword at him.
"You've got giants coming at you from behind. The bridge will collapse once they reach the spot where they're heading. That's your time limit."
But Rutgal didn't understand, having lost his sense of recognition. He didn't need to understand. He just didn't want to lose his usual composure.
He readied his sword. Rutgal let out a fierce, intense roar, "Ku, guu, guuuuuuuuuuu! "
"Then, then it's fine! No matter what kind of past we've been through, if you're going to be my opponent, I'll crush you like I used to!"
From Rutgal's hand, a massive Sword of Fire appeared. It was several meters long, a sword that a human couldn't possibly wield.
"Die! Sur! You're going to dance and get eaten here, and that's the end of it!"
That was swung down towards Sur's head. Sur gazed at it calmly. Above his head, the sword was approaching, a fatal blow that would kill him instantly if it touched him.
Sur muttered, "You're not even trying."
Sur closed in on Rutgal's face. Rutgal was shocked and tried to swing the Sword of Fire wildly.
"You're not even trying."
Sur used his feet to climb up Rutgal's body, a technique he learned from training with Rutgal. It was a method to break through Rutgal's Domain Control.
Sur reached Rutgal's face and pointed his sword at his eyes.
"This is pathetic. Are you going easy on me because I'm your son? That's ridiculous. I'm using Domain Control, you know."
Sur's Sword of Fire pierced Rutgal's eyes.
"Aaahhhhh! Sur! Surrrr!"
Sur's sword crushed Rutgal's eyes, burned them, and made them unable to recover.
Then, he pulled out the sword. A small amount of hot blood splattered everywhere. The wound was burned and cauterized, so there was very little bleeding.
"A little more, and I'll show you my true strength. You're not like that. You, who toyed with me so much, can't be like that."
"Shut up, you annoying insect! This is ridiculous!"
Rutgal swung his sword. Sur jumped back with a cold gaze, dodging the attack.
"Dammit, dammit, dammit! Sur, you, how dare you mock me, the great Commander-in-Chief Rutgal, like this!"
"...What's with the overacting? You're not even trying to hide your intentions. I won't fall for that."
Sur readied his sword, remaining vigilant. No matter how much his father tried to provoke him, Sur wouldn't let his guard down. He still had his Domain Control.
"Hurry up, you don't have all day. There are countless giants closing in on you from behind. If you don't take me down first, you're finished."
Sur pointed to Rutgal's back. It was then that Rutgal realized the effects of Domain Control.
He looked back, growling.
"What is that...?! So that's it, that's your... Sur, you really...!"
Rutgal stabbed his sword into the rainbow bridge. Then, he said...
"Domain Control―――." "You're full of openings!"
Sur closed in again. He swung his sword, pressing in on Rutgal.
Domain Control is a sorcery that requires intense focus. One needs to concentrate their mind and immerse theirselves in the sorcery.
So, no matter what Demon, when they're about to activate Domain Control, they become defenseless. That's what Sur had planned for, having set up his Domain Control ahead of time.
There's no demon that can withstand this attack.
"Shh!"
"Gah!"
One flash. Sur's Sword of Fire sliced through Rutgal's foot, cutting it in 2. But this wasn't enough to stop him. Sur continued his momentum, charging forward with his sword, aiming for the other foot.
"Don't underestimate me, you little brat!"
Rutgal lifted his foot to dodge, but Sur was one step ahead. With a light jump and a spinning slash, Sur cut off Rutgal's other foot.
"Aaaagh!"
And so, Rutgal lost both his feet. He fell to the ground, bleeding profusely, and glared at Sur with a bloodshot gaze.
"You damn... You're going to kill me eventually, aren't you? If I'd known it would come to this, I should have killed you earlier..."
"What are you talking about? That's nonsense. Your voice, your appearance, everything about you makes my blood boil."
Sur remained cautious, readjusting his sword stance.
"Hurry up and get serious. You must have a hidden trick up your sleeve. You, the Commander-in-chief of the Demon King's army, wouldn't try to tempt me with a cheap trick, would you?"
Sur was annoyed by Rutgal's weak and pitiful act. Rutgal tried to crawl away from Sur, his face down on the ground.
"Do you think I'd let you go?"
Sur didn't let his guard down. If Rutgal thought he could escape by pretending to be weak, he was sadly mistaken.
With a swift strike, Sur dealt a finishing blow to Rutgal's back. Rutgal's movements ceased, and Sur cut off his hand. Rutgal screamed. How far would Sur's anger take him?
"I won't forget."
Sur said, cutting off Rutgal's remaining hand.
"I know how strong you were. How one-sidedly did you corner my immature me? So, you think I'd fall for that weak act? You, who were so strong, are now pretending to be a weakling? Do you think I'd buy that?"
But Rutgal didn't pull out his trump card. Not even a hint of Domain Control. Sur was getting frustrated and was about to flip Rutgal over.
"Are you waiting for me to slip up and kill you? And then attack me right after you revive? That's not something you'd do."
Because, because you...
"You're always on the side of the strong. Demon King army Commander-in-chief Rutgal. If the enemy revives and challenges you, you'd crush them immediately. You'd never let your guard down, being the strongest sword in the Demon King army."
Sur pressed the Sword of Fire against Rutgal's neck.
"That's who you were supposed to be. A strong and terrifying winner. That's Commander-in-chief Rutgal."
Rutgal didn't say a word. Sur gritted his teeth, and the sword tip trembled with rage.
"Why? Why won't you take me seriously? Are you testing me? Then I'll kill you at once. If I don't kill you, you won't be able to show your true strength..."
"Sur."
It was Toxy who stopped Sur. Sur glared at her with a stern face and said:
"Toxy-sama, I told you not to interfere. This time, I'm going to take care of this Commander-in-chief Rutgal myself."
"No, no, Sur. Look. At your father's face."
"Wha...? What's..."
As he said that, Sur flipped Rutgal's massive body over, climbed on top of it, and looked at his face.
And then, he was speechless.
"Forgive me, forgive me, Sur.... I was wrong, I was so wrong...! So please, don't torment this pitiful father anymore...! I have no more hands to beg for mercy...!"
There was only a giant with a dirty face, its face twisted in tears and desperation, begging for its life. Sur saw that and was left stunned.
Toxy said,
"Sur, you're probably stronger than you think. I too, after seeing this battle, realize I underestimated your strength. I hardly fought at all, didn't you? It's unbelievable."
"What are you saying, Toxy-sama...?"
"You moved so fast, even I couldn't keep up. You cut down your father without him being able to react at all, one-sidedly."
Sur's eyes widened in disbelief at Toxy's explanation. It was like being told a lie.
"I'm surprised. You're that strong, Sur. In terms of speed, you might even be on par with Sandra, or maybe even Wade."
"N, no. That can't be. Wade-sama and Sandra-sama are especially strong, aren't they? I, I'm not... like that."
"..."
Toxy fell silent. Sur looked down at Rutgal again, his mind reeling in disbelief.
What he saw was a giant, huge in body only, a pitiful and ugly father who didn't love himself, feared, and tried to destroy him.
He tried to tempt him, and Sur believed it. He tried to believe. But Toxy denied it. It's different. Rutgal's powerless tears are proof of that.
Seeing that,
Something inside Sur broke.
"...What's going on here?"
The Sword of Fire in Sur's hand disappeared. Sur's whole body trembled, and his teeth gritted with a loud creaking sound.
"What's going on here? What's going on?! For someone like you, I've been suffering. This is ridiculous. Futile. For someone like you..."
The trembling grew stronger and louder. Sur's face contorted in rage as he glared at Rutgal, his eyes filled with hatred, fear, obsession, and the love he once sought.
It was all... Thud! With a loud crash, Sur's back teeth shattered, and everything came crashing down.
"...Empty..."
Sur collapsed on the spot, landing on Rutgal's stomach. He then bit into Rutgal's stomach.
His teeth sank in.
"―――――ahh!"
Rutgal let out a pitiful scream, like he was being strangled. Sur didn't think twice, and with his mouth only, he started devouring Rutgal, thinking of him as his father.
"Empty. I. What was the point of taking this job from Alex-sama? Why did I... For what? It was all futile. What a waste, all of it."
"S-Sur, st-stop. P-please don't eat me. Are you going to consume me? Eat me alive, make me yours? Sur, Sur...!"
"Gross. The taste of blood and iron is awful. This is disgusting. Why do I have to eat something like this? Empty. I..."
While muttering to himself, Sur still couldn't stop his mouth from devouring Rutgal, even though he knew why. Or perhaps, he didn't have the intention to stop in the first place.
Without any appetite, Sur continued to eat Rutgal as if it was his duty. As he did so, his focus began to wane, and his Domain Control was released.
Sloppiness. Since he had come this far, he might as well. With that mindset, Sur carelessly bit into Rutgal's meat, chewing and swallowing it.
Just then, a voice called out.
"Whoa, you won? No, this is... impressive. I guess I underestimated you, brown demon."
"Wow, Sur-chan, your face is amazing. It's all bloody, and you look like ashes after being burned to the ground. I kinda expected this to happen."
The ones who called out were Mudi and Philia, Wade's masters.
The two of them were each holding brother Rupt and sister Sirina captive.
Both of them, freed from the recognition obstruction caused by Domain Control, showed fear towards Sur's appearance. They screamed and trembled, trying to convey their intentions.
"Brown demon. These guys want to talk to you. What do you do?"
"..."
Sur remained silent, gazing at their figures. These 2, who had once looked down on Sur, who was bullied by his father. What kind of emotions did they hold towards Sur now?
...But Sur couldn't care less.
"Leave them as they are, please. Mudi-sama..."
"Nh-! Nh-!" "Nn, nn, nn, nn! Nh-!"
Brother and sister screamed, but Sur ignored them, returning to his task of devouring Rutgal.
Rutgal has a lot of quantity. However, no matter how much he eat of the mysterious food, his stomach never gets full.
So, Sur thought, "I'll just devour Rutgal, Rupt, and Sirina, the 3 of them, all at once."
