Volume 7 Chapter 48 Wade and the Treasure Chest

Volume 7 Chapter 48 Wade And The Treasure Chest

Early in the morning, I received the enhanced Durandal and thanked Gold and his sister.

"Sorry about the sudden job, it was tough."

"It's okay, I can do this much in one night. Ask me again sometime."

"But it's not something I recommend."

Sylvia hit Gold on the head. Slap! a nice sound came from Gold's bald head.

"As for the enhancement contents, you still can't use gravity magic, so we added attack power in the direction of cutting ability. And I was told that you could use big brother's iron magic, but that's still unclear."

"That's convenient, but I don't get it. Well, it's fine if I understand it later."

"I think so too, but if you can figure it out, it'd be great. They said that's something the Great Rune can do, and I want to ask Terin-sensei about it..."

Sylvia was flipping through that thick book again. I think it was called the Great Rune Encyclopedia or something. And then I realized, "Ah..."

 "What's up?"

"...Wait, isn't Terin, the one who's with the enemy camp, the author of this book?"

I checked the author's column. And indeed, it said "Terin".

"What? That can't be true. That's too narrow-minded."

Sylvia denied it with a laugh, thinking it was a joke. "No, I'm serious," I said, showing her the evidence.

"I mean, the enemy also uses Great Runes, right? And they're skilled enough to join the 'Oath' camp. The possibility is pretty high, isn't it?"

 "...Well, maybe..."

 Sylvia's eyes were swimming.

"Well, maybe, but I think we should capture her alive like we did with Alkei-san before. Don't kill her, and don't make her lose consciousness. If we kill the real deal, that'd be bad! I'm a huge fan, after all!"

"Okay, okay... I'll keep that in mind."

As I comforted Sylvia, who was getting worked up, I put the Durandal away in my pocket.

I headed towards the entrance of our base. Roman was standing there.

 "You're off, then. Good luck."

"Yeah, I'll leave the lookout to you, Roman. If we get attacked at this timing, please protect everyone."

"Alright, leave it to me. We did have an evacuation drill yesterday, after all. Although Echidna did change the entrance right after teleporting, I think it's safe..."

"Yeah, I guess so. It's not like 'Oath' would attack us at a time like this, right?"

"Exactly, there's no need to worry. You're overthinking it."

The 2 of them chuckled. Then, "Well, no matter what happens, I believe Roman will take care of it," I said.

"You're putting a lot of trust in me. As someone loved by God, it's only natural."

"Yeah, that's right. Roman is a reliable guy."

"...I guess I was out of line with my joke. I'll gratefully accept that trust. Wade-kun, be careful too. No matter what happens, our enemy is strong. However―――."

Roman raised the corners of his mouth, teasing me.

"Wade-kun will definitely win. You're not inferior to me, and you're loved by God too."

I shrugged my shoulders and replied, "It's embarrassing to be praised that much."

 "Well, I'll be off."

 "Alright, good luck."

 I opened the front door.

The 'Oath' base was hidden among the ruins of the investigated area.

"This is definitely the area where the homeless people were attacked and the danger level was raised, right?"

In other words, they had been hiding in a place we had put off dealing with, and 'Oath' had done it skillfully.

As I approached, I noticed that there were a lot of small stones scattered around my feet. Why? I looked up and saw the shadow of debris on the roof.

 "What's going on?"

I used "Create Chain" to stretch out a chain and hooked it onto the roof, jumping up. I landed on the stone roof. Then, I saw a huge hole.

"What is this? Was it attacked by a dragon or something? ...Ah, I see, Echidna."

Huh? I had assumed Echidna would attack together with 'Oath', but it seems that's not the case. Did they have a falling out?

I tilted my head and observed the inside of the hole.

It looked like a normal household inside. Of course, there was some damage, but if you ignored that, it felt like a normal home. There was a sense of people living there.

I steeled myself and jumped into the hole. I landed quietly, using my knees as a cushion, and entered the room.

As I observed from above, the ground directly below the large hole was greatly depressed, but aside from that, it looked like a normal household. However, when I passed Ajna Chakra through it, I could see magical power residue scattered about.

"There's the large hole, and it's probably no mistake to think of this as 'Oath's' base."

I cautiously surveyed my surroundings while examining the room.

The room I had descended into was like a living room. There was probably nothing I was looking for here.

What was strange was that there was no one's presence here. I had thought that at least one person would be stationed to keep watch, but that wasn't the case.

Or perhaps there was a mechanism in place that could defend it even without anyone present.

I went from room to room, checking the bedroom, kitchen, and interrogation room?. In the midst of that, I found a cluttered room that seemed like a warehouse and stepped inside.

Ajna Chakra was also telling me that there was something here. I could see a prominent flow of magical power with my second eye.

And then I stood before what seemed to be the source of it all.

 "...A treasure chest?"

I tilted my head. A treasure chest. It was enormous, big enough for a person to enter.

I immediately imagined that something important was inside. But what could it be? What was it?

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

I recalled the trap that had sent me flying to the 80th floor underground.

Treasure chests are always bad news, and I never encounter good ones. When I do find one, it's always trouble.

So I was extremely wary of this treasure chest. I tried to use Ajna Chakra to sense what was inside, but the magical defense was too strong, and I couldn't get a read.

"There's no choice but to open it... Alright, let's do this. I won't die from anything except 'Oath's' attacks, and 'Oath' probably can't set traps. Alright, here I go...!"

I opened the treasure chest with a loud creak. Then, I was sucked in by an incredible suction force that erupted from within.

"!? Which way is this going?! Should I resist or not?!"

Even with my considerable strength, I was struggling against the suction force. But when I thought about it, I had already checked all the rooms in this house, and there was nothing else to search for.

 "...Fine, I'll do it!"

In the end, I dove headfirst into the treasure chest and plunged into the unknown void.

I was sucked into the treasure chest, but I didn't feel any particularly harmful interference, so I just went with the flow and spun around in the darkness.

After a while, I saw the bottom of the darkness, and I swam through the air to adjust my posture and landed safely.

 "Now, I wonder what's inside...?"

Just as I landed with a pose, a voice rose up beside me.

"Waaaahhh...! I can't leave this dungeon without 'Oath'-san! I completely forgot...! Ahhh...!"

I opened my mouth in surprise at Terin, who was crying loudly and wailing.
