Volume 7 Chapter 5 The Oath on the Journey

Volume 7 Chapter 5 The Oath On The Journey

There's one person who's been decided to accompany me on my journey.

Romantini, known as the "Narcissistic Bard," is a magician who fights with an absurdly high opinion of himself.

I didn't think much of it. I figured it was better to have a strong ally, and I thought Romantini was just a backup to Sieg, the number 2.

So now, I thought I could just let Alex say something, and that would be enough.

"Then, let's hear a travel song I'm the composer and lyricist 'Why did the gods love me?'!"

"Isn't that tension only for battle...?"

Ugh, Romantini is more annoying than I thought. What do I do?

I'm sitting in the carriage, looking bitter and furrowing my brow. The others are also smiling wryly.

The others, that is, the members I chose to accompany me on this journey.

First, there's Moruru, who's curled up in my lap, looking at Romantini with a tilted head.

Next, there's Sylvia, and Gold, who may have quit being an adventurer, but still has some fighting power, so I'm counting on them to maintain my equipment as a protector and Durandal.

Furthermore, Ridge and Windy are riding in the noble's carriage ahead of us. I thought it was necessary to have them, considering their noble background and wisdom. Lord also said it would be a good learning experience.

By the way, I wanted to take it easy, so I chose to ride in the carriage with everyone else. And Romantini is also on the carriage.

So, all of us have finished introducing ourselves and are now riding in the carriage. We've gotten to know each other, but we still don't know how to talk to each other, that's the current situation.

And then Romantini suddenly started singing, which is what's happening now.

"Thank you for your silence, everyone..."

Romantini says, and I come back to myself. When I look, everyone is applauding, looking impressed. Hmm, was Romantini's song really that good? I was too focused to listen.

"Now that the atmosphere has relaxed a bit, Wade-kun, I have a few things I'd like to discuss with you. If you're interested, the others can also..."

As I hold Moruru, Roman turns to face me. Sylvia and Gold also move closer, looking intrigued.

The carriage creaks, and Moruru jumps in surprise. I gently pat her shoulder to calm her down.

 "What's this about?"

"About our enemy, 'Oath'. And another thing, about the gift from my king to Moruru-chan."

Moruru tilts her head, "A gift?" "Yes, that's right. There's no need to worry about eavesdroppers here," Roman says with a gentle smile.

"Which one should we hear first?"

"Hmm... Moruru, sorry. I know it's bothering you, but let's hear about our enemy first."

"Aww, Papa's being selfish again~. But Papa's work is important too. Okay."

 "Thanks, Moruru~!"

 "Hehe!"

I find her slightly childish way of speaking adorable, and I give Moruru a gentle hug. Moruru is giggling away.

"It's clear you 2 have a great relationship."

 "Thanks, Roman. So..."

"Yes, about 'Oath'. What kind of threat he is, and what kind of power he wield. I'll tell you all about it from now on."

Roman straightens up and begins to explain to me.

"To put it simply, 'Oath' is a master of Geass."

"Geass... I've heard of it. My family's been involved with Geass, and it's like we have a pseudo-connection or something."

"That's right. The king has also heard about it. However, Wade-kun, do you really understand what Geass is?"

I'm asked, and I think for a moment before shaking my head.

"No, I don't really get it. What is Geas, anyway? I had an image of it being like a promise or something."

"That's right. A vow to God. That's what Geas is. One aspect of the magic of words, which is Druid."

 "Druid?"

I raise an eyebrow, and Roman smiles, saying "I see, then let's talk about Druids."

"Wade-kun, do you remember my magic?"

 "Ah, that one."

As I nodded, Moruru looked up at my face and said, "What kind of magic is it?" Sylvia and Gold, who were observing quietly, also chimed in, "Yeah, tell us from the start" and "Please do".

 I began to explain.

"When I fought against Roman in the war, Roman kept saying 'I'm loved by God! So, attacks like that won't work!' And, in reality, they hardly had any effect."

"Huh? What's going on?" Moruru asked, tilting her head. The siblings also looked puzzled, saying, "I don't get it..."

"And then there was the time when Roman said 'Please bring down lightning, God!' and actually brought down lightning."

"Yeah, that's right. That's what it means to be a Druid. Especially with my way of using it."

So, I'll explain it again. But Roman started over.

"A Druid is a type of magic that makes God grant your wishes by conveying your words to God through a wooden medium. It's a magic that makes God hear your voice."

"That sounds ridiculously powerful just from hearing it."

In reality, Roman was incredibly strong.

 However, Roman shook her head.

"No, it's not something anyone can do like me. Of course, there are various tricks to it, and to use strong magic, you need to be loved by God."

"What do you mean by 'loved'?"

What is this 'love' thing? How do you get loved?

"It's also a matter of talent, but it's like trying to become God's lover in a myth, or performing a role like I do, and building a trust relationship with God by using magic consistently."

Setting aside the awareness of my own performance... As I listened to Roman's explanation, I thought to myself.

It's kind of like the relationship between a celebrity and their fans... If you're popular, you get a lot of power (or money, if you're a celebrity)...?

Thinking about it that way, it makes sense. One could even take an idol-like approach, like Roman, and become a performer. Using magic consistently is like daily video uploads...

 ...A Druid YouTuber...

"I think I kind of get what it means to be loved."

I say with a smug face, and Roman nods with a "That's right".

"For example, Transformation Magic grows stronger by being 'similar' to God, and Druid magic is connected to being 'loved' by God, making it even more powerful."

Whoa, I'm impressed. But, in this world, the reasons for magic growth are often unclear. There probably aren't many powerful users like Roman either.

"And what about the aspect of Druid magic, which is Geas?"

 Roman says.

"As I said earlier, Geas is a 'vow'. It's a magic used by Celtic knights, where they make a promise to God, saying 'I'll keep this promise, so please give me this power' and exchange an oath with God."

 "That makes sense, it's interesting."

One makes a promise, and in return, they get power. It's a straightforward relationship.

"And the more you restrict yourself, the more power you get, right?"

"Yes, that's exactly right. You offer a sacrifice, and the more you suffer, the more power you get. It's a contract with God. That's what Geas is."

 And then, Roman continues.

"If you break it, you'll definitely face destruction. That's also part of Geas. The more power you receive, the greater the destruction will be. If it's a small Geas, you might just get a painful lesson, but it won't be fatal."

 "Hmm...I was just thinking, Roman."

 I throw out a question.

"Can you, like, force someone to break a Geas? Or decide someone else's Geas on your own?"

Roman's eyes widen in surprise, and then he chuckles quietly. "Hehe, that's right. King, you really are...".

 "What's so funny?"

"Yes, Wade, I'm going to take the approach you mentioned, the 'Oath'. When he was young, he was so skilled that he even had a nickname like 'Rule Maker'."

 "Rule Maker, huh?"

"Yes. But it's not about unilaterally imposing rules on others. It's about setting rules that are suitable for the people involved, including yourself, and having everyone follow them."

"And what if you can't follow them?"

"The divine punishment will befall, that's what it means. It's interesting, isn't it? Unlike other magic, Druids have many opportunities to sense the will of the gods."

I had my doubts about it, and let out a troubled sigh. Moruru had a clueless expression and yawned, while the other two looked puzzled.

 Then, Roman spoke up.

"Worrying is harder than doing. Why don't we try a simple Guessing Game with these people?"

 "I'll do it!"

Moruru's loud declaration was cute, and I couldn't help but burst out laughing.
