Volume 5 Chapter 13 Raid - Fraud And Robbery Department

After arranging for Ridge to convey to the lord that I had obtained information from my old man, Toxy and I headed to the Ruins District, east of the city's slums.

Having lived in the slums for over a decade, I was well acquainted with the Ruins District. It was the last resort, the hiding place for wanted criminals. There was hardly any sign of human activity, a haven for criminals to hide their breath. That was the Ruins District, east of the slums.

To hide our faces, Toxy and I put on masks and stepped into the Ruins District. I wore a Spartan-like helmet on my head, while Toxy covered her face with an eye mask and a veil that extended below.

It was night, late at night a few days after visiting my old man. If we made a fuss during the day, no matter how much of a ruin it was, the guard would come. But at night, Karditsa was like a lawless zone.

Especially, there was no moon tonight. It was the best day to rampage.

"Hey? You young lady and gentleman, wait a minute."

An old man sitting on the street despite the late hour called out to us, but we ignored him and moved on.

"Wait, wait, wait, wait. That way, that way..."

Realizing that we were not lending an ear, the old man sat down again without saying another word. And then, a bell rang, "ding-dong".

"Was that old man a gatekeeper?"

 "What should we do?"

"There's no point in crushing him now, just leave him be. Besides, I don't think the enemy can injure us"

 "Hehe, you're relaxed."

For now, it was a profit just to know that the Fraud and Robbery Department was ahead. We proceeded without hesitation.

Then, several burly men blocked our path. Lanterns illuminated us. Looking back, I saw a line of similar men.

"Hey. That old geezer on the side of the road didn't stop you, huh? Whatever. Too late now."

"Hiding your faces, are ya? Pretty careful for a moonless night. So, you're attackers? Sword adventurers, maybe?"

"You're young. A cocky sword adventurer, huh? At your age, you're probably just copper-ranked."

"Ha! Tough luck for you. We're all above copper rank here. Ain't no iron-ranked scrubs in our plundering crew, got it?"

Without saying a word, those guys laughed with a vulgar tone.

"What's up? You've come all the way here just to get fucked, huh?"

"But hey, a brat like you at this age. You look healthy, so you'll fetch a good price, right? Oh, but didn't the sl*ve department get wrecked?"

"No worries. We'll just rebuild it. Besides, the key to the sl*ve department, the Puppet Master, is still alive and kicking. If we hand them over in good condition, we'll get plenty of reward."

"Sounds good! Let's quickly tie these bastards up then."

They took out ropes and laughed. These scumbags who don't see others as humans. Maybe it's because they don't need to use their brains, unlike someone smart like Eujary.

Well then, let's do as we please.

Toxy and I laughed, naturally back-to-back.

"What should we do? I think we can beat them easily, even if we're not putting much effort."

 Toxy asked, and I answered.

"Let's make these scumbags suffer as much as possible."

 "Haha, got it."

 I chanted.

 "Object Weight Increase."

All the men around us knelt on the ground. While they groaned, saying, "What... what's happening?," Toxy spoke up.

 "Poison Mist."

A poisonous mist filled the area from Toxy's hand. I drank the antidote Toxy gave me and continued casting magic.

 "Ugh, guh... ah..."

 "Help... plea...se..."

With this, the copper-ranked adventurers were wiped out. I released the magic. Not a single person stood up.

 "What do you think?"

"I think it's like being the second gatekeeper. Strong folks wouldn't bother with such troublesome stuff. So basically, they turn off the lights and wait, ready to ambush right away."

"Yeah, it's pretty impressive how they quickly ambushed in response to the old man's bell sound. Being a copper-rank adventurer is tough, huh?"

They're strong enough to take on a single ordinary person, but they're still no match for a group that could defeat a normal person who can't use magic.

"But there are a lot of them here. Just the copper-rank adventurers... ten? There must be more further in. They can't maintain this alert level without breaks. There are probably 3 times as many. And silver-rank adventurers as guards... 5?

"That's a lot. Even if the copper-rank adventurers are no match for us, 5 silver-rank adventurers... that's like 5 Sandras from before. Isn't that a bit tough?

"How do we compare to our current strength objectively?

 "...It might be okay"

 "Alright, let's go"

We move past the copper-rank adventurers and go deeper.

Gradually, lights start to appear in the ruined city. The fact that the bell is ringing and they're so carefree means that this ambush must have been very effective in the past.

Also, perhaps it's because our suppression with Toxy was too quiet.

 "What's the daily take?"

 "About 5 silver coins."

"Not bad. That's about right for a small shop."

"But damn, that chick running the place was hot. That crazy bastard shouldn't have gotten all worked up and killed her."

Low laughter fills the air. Toxy and I watch the lights with a cold smile.

 I say.

"This area is probably only copper-rank. There's no need to call them out and fight them"

 "Yeah, that's right"

We nod in agreement and move forward calmly and quietly.

 "Poison Mist"

Toxy spreads her poison as we go deeper and deeper.
