Volume 4 Chapter 18 Master-Apprentice Contract - Ice, Clay, Toxy
As Philia casually strolled around the room, she said,
"So, next we decide who I'll be mentoring, huh? Hmm, hmm..."
Philia tilted her head. Facing her were Ice, looking tense, and the two injured people who seemed to be entering a state of resignation.
Philia spoke up,
"How about Alex-chan, should I take on Alex-chan?"
"Huh? Me?"
"Yeah. You see, since my teaching style is a bit unique, it's not easy to instruct those with typical talents."
"Ah, I see. I kind of get it."
Alex responded to Philia's confirmation of his background knowledge.
"That's right, maybe I can teach those who are smart and naturally talented in magic."
Philia said and she continued.
"So, even though you have average talent, I have a knack for nurturing those who excel through hard work and determination."
Philia then walked behind us, putting her arms around Clay and Toxy.
"You guys are amazing. Despite your physical limitations and the daunting presence of Mudi, who seems dangerous even from a distance, you still earnestly seek knowledge from him. So, I have a question for you."
Whispering to Clay and Toxy, Philia asked a question that I couldn't hear.
Clay and Toxy responded,
"Yes."
"Ah, well, maybe?"
At this, Philia burst into laughter.
"Kyahaha! Great! Your unwavering determination and lack of resistance are commendable. You guys are willing to learn from me, and I'll nurture you both!"
Philia exclaimed joyfully. She danced with excitement. And with high spirits, she told Clay and Toxy,
"Alright, from now on, follow me! It will take time for your treatment, but don't worry, it's just a bit painful!"
Though I was taken aback by her words, Clay and Toxy stood up. They followed Philia to the entrance, then turned back to us.
"Well then, we're off."
"Alright, see you later, everyone."
Clay used crutches, and Toxy struggled to maintain balance as they left the house. I couldn't find the right words to express my thoughts on their determination.
"So, I'll be mentoring Ice."
Alex shrugged his shoulders. Ice looked uneasy, furrowing her brows.
"...Me?"
"Don't worry. What Mudi seeks is the epitome of physical, magic, and mental excellence. Ice meets the standard for magic and mentality, but not quite for the physical aspect."
Alex then added,
"That's right. Ice, you possess the closest abilities to Wade in my opinion."
"Really?"
Ice looked surprised as he gazed at Alex. Alex continued with a smile,
"Initially, I only had high expectations for Wade. But now, I acknowledge everyone as geniuses. Among them, I believe either you or Wade will reach the top."
"Me...?"
"In simple terms, it means you're the strongest."
Alex chuckled. Ice seemed displeased and responded,
"I don't feel happy about flattery!"
"No, Ice. Although it's different from what Alex said, I also believe you're strong." I reassured him.
"Me too. Ice's progress in magic is quite unique," Sandra added.
"...Huh?"
Ice looked puzzled as I and Sandra praised her.
"Wade-kun...? Sandra-chan too..."
"Well, that icy armor of yours is incredibly strong. Except for direct impact attacks like mine, others can't reach you."
I explained to Ice.
"That remote-controlled snowman of Ice's is amazing. By behaving as if it doesn't know its own location, it can dominate the battlefield from afar."
"...!"
As we continued to talk one after another, Ice blushed shyly and averted its gaze. Then, Alex followed up.
"Moreover, Ice, the snowmen you're using, they're not actually fully automatic, right?"
"Uh, yeah..."
I held my breath at that confirmation.
"That's right. The movements are precise and too accurate. There's no spirit inside them. In other words, Ice, you're paying attention to each small snowman and controlling them individually."
Ice nodded with a strange expression. I couldn't help but shudder at the enormity of it.
I mean, that's like controlling ten remote-controlled cars by yourself, or managing ten game characters by yourself, right? That's what it means.
Leaving Sandra, who didn't understand what was going on, Alex smiled deeply.
"That's right. You'll become incredibly strong if you develop properly. No one will be able to match you. Wade's growth rate is impressive, but Ice, I don't even know how far your potential can go."
Ice, overwhelmed by the lavish praise, remained silent with wide eyes. Meanwhile, Alex happily spun his arms around, saying, "Oh, I can't wait to see you in action!"
"Alright, starting tomorrow, Ice... let's see. Please sit in the living room chair around 9 a.m. Lectures will likely be the focus. I'll provide everything you need, so just make sure Moruru behaves."
"Also, we'll be buying toys for her to control and place on my lap, is that okay?"
"Yeah, it should mainly be lectures. As long as you behave with her on your lap, it's not a problem."
After finishing the explanation, Alex cheerfully left, saying, "I'll go shopping."
"It's rare to see Alex so happy."
"But I understand his feelings. Ice's magic has a lot of potential for development. Alex seems to enjoy tactical planning, so they're a perfect match."
"He likes tactical planning? Alex?"
"He reads about it occasionally in books."
I nodded in understanding. Sandra, who seemed to be observing people freely, then asked anxiously,
"Um, Wade-kun, is it okay...?"
"What's wrong? You probably don't mind being tutored by Alex, right?"
"N-no! I think that's probably fine... But, um, what about Toxy-chan and Clay-kun?"
"Ah, I see."
I could sense her unease. Ice then revealed the truth.
"Um, you see? Philia-san asked Toxy-chan and Clay-kun, 'Are you prepared to give up being human?'"
