Volume 5 Chapter 60 Side Braver Xiii (Part Ii)
"They (the demon) were quite bold to reveal their true identity in front of Brave after hiding among humans. It's troublesome that they also have the strength to back it up."
"It seemed different from when they appeared in front of Aina-sama and others in the royal capital."
Initially, they were assassins sent to kill Finn, but when they sensed that Relix and the others were Brave party, they revealed their true form as a demon by transforming and growing horns. It seems that they couldn't fully utilize their abilities while disguised as humans and realized they couldn't defeat the Brave group as they were. Nevertheless, it was surprisingly easy for them to expose their true identity.
As the demon's involvement became clear and things started to get really fishy, we finally managed to find evidence showing the relationship between the assassin and the brother. Specifically, it was a contract proving the connection between Finn's brother and his supporter. Shion conducted inquiries at the tavern where the brother frequents, and obtained it at the scene of a traced transaction.
Through this incident, it was revealed that Shion was not stuck in a lowly position within the Church due to jealousy from others, but rather had significant personal issues.
In short, he was what you might call a 'scheming priest'. It was quite perplexing to see a priest drinking heavily, even if it was for gathering information.
Whether it was good or bad to discover a new side of my comrade aside, it's undeniable that we succeeded in obtaining crucial information thanks to it.
The name of the revealed supporter is Narinki.
A person from a neighboring country, who got involved in bad business and was wanted by the government. It seemed like even the Mercenary Guild from the neighboring country was sent to capture him, and even though Gabert didn't join, he heard about it.
Moreover, the plan failed, and Narinki managed to escape. This sudden appearance of a name that was unheard of before surprised Gabert.
Even though we couldn't directly blame sending the assassin, being associated with a criminal from the neighboring country was enough reason for criticism. It was a strong enough reason to step in as a Brave. We decided and headed to the separate house where the brother lived.
──However, things ended in a surprisingly simple way.
According to the information we had beforehand, it was supposed that Finn's brother had hired a large number of private soldiers waiting, but when we arrived fully prepared, the mansion was almost empty. Inside, there were only the original servants and the brother sitting in a chair looking bewildered. The armed private soldiers and demons were nowhere to be found.
"So, what about your brother? Did you interrogate him?"
"...Apparently, the funding from his supporters stopped, and he couldn't pay the mercenaries. Those who seemed like demons also mentioned that without guaranteed future payments, they were not obligated to the contract. I can't say for sure, but it's certain that there was hardly any money left in my brother's mansion."
An awkward atmosphere surrounded Finn, making it hard to say anything.
It's not just a letdown—it would be too disrespectful to say that. It's true that we were fortunate to take over her brother's other residence without a fight, but I hope she can understand our feelings as we were prepared for a deadly battle against demons.
Anyway, we won when we managed to restrain Finn's brother. Later on, Finn officially announced her succession as the head of the family, and that brings us to the present.
Having lost the main supporter he relied on, it seems Finn's brother has also given up. He answered the interrogation smoothly, and it appears that the assassins, including the bandits, were hired through the connections of his supporter.
What's truly fearsome is indeed that supporter, Narinki. If even demons were dispatched by Narinki, one wonders what kind of connections he truly had. Furthermore, who managed to capture that corrupt merchant?
"For now, send a letter to the royal capital requesting an investigation into a man named Narinki who was lurking in Eubarest. Once the facts are revealed, we will also inform Finn-sama, so please continue to be cautious until then."
"Understood, Mayuri-san. I apologize for the trouble, but thank you in advance."
"No, it's only natural."
Finn responded softly to Mayuri's words. The two are close in age and have the commonality of growing up in an environment without peers of the same generation around. Despite the short time they've known each other, they seem to have become quite friendly.
'...However, to think that the boss of the demon is a human. King Arcus is wise, and the country has good public order, but there are plenty of people with bad intentions if you look for them. It's a lamentable situation.'
Leiva's words, tinged with a sigh, only made me smile wryly.
──"Yukina's involvement in Narinki's capture." It was a little later that I heard that he had defeated a demon again. I feel sorry for sulking for a whole day about that. It's unfair to my comrades.
