Volume 5 Chapter 50 Intent To Kill But Doesn't Want To Die
If Slay is a weapon similar to Gram, I had a vague sense that there was something 'beyond' the Snake Belly Sword. When it played the same ritual as Gram did before, I became more certain. I wondered what form would emerge.
"It was a mistake not to nod at the beginning! Once I take this form, there's no stopping me. I'll carve into you until you truly understand who you belong to!"
In response to Reed's cry, the enlarged snake belly rampaged, destroying everything in its path. There was no longer any room for negotiation. Everyone present was desperately trying to escape from us at the center.
"This is totally a monster now, isn't it?"
In the situation, it's pretty much the same as when facing the evil dragon. The major difference is that my motivation isn't as high as it was back then. And that was the most fatal part.
'This is bad. Partner, you still aren't used to intentionally activating 'Great Magic Blade.' You usually get the hang of it, but not this time.'
I knew instinctively. To counter the Yamata-no-Orochi the Devouring Serpent (Dáinsleif) in front of me, I have no choice but to play my trump card. The biggest problem is that I can't freely play that important card yet.
"Let's go, Black Blade! I'm going to kill you, but you're not going to die!"
"You're already saying crazy things!"
Snake belly—no, a giant snake belly rushes straight towards me. It's fast, but I can intercept it within my range. I strike the black spear from below, deflecting it upwards. However, Reed has multiple 'arms'. Just as I prepare for the next attack,
'You idiot, it's coming from above!'
"Huh?"
I raise my gaze and see a giant snake belly split into four branches, lifting its head towards me. I realize that Reed combined the four snake bellies into one.
"Ohhhhh!?"
I deflect the four shining blades raining down with a swing of my black spear.
'Next, it's from below!'
As Gram warns me, I hear a scraping sound. I jump back, and two new snake bellies emerge from the ground. Another snake belly crawls low along the ground, aiming from below. It's a simple but effective feint.
──Snap!
"What the!?"
A new sound caught my attention, and to my surprise, a slightly smaller snake belly-like appendage was entwined around my arm, restricting my movements. Could it really change its size like that? Thanks to this, my movements were limited.
Just as I thought I couldn't move much due to being entangled, the final large snake belly-like appendage approached as if it were the main threat.
"Don't underestimate meeee!!"
I lowered my hips, braced my legs, and swung the black spear with all my might. Of course, the weight increased due to the entangled snake belly-like appendage, but my movements naturally transmitted to the root of the appendage. The blade dug into my arm, blood spurting out, but I ignored the pain with determination.
"────What!?"
Perhaps underestimating my strength, Reed couldn't brace himself against the pull of the appendage, causing him to lose his balance. The restraining force loosened, and the large appendage, which had been advancing straight, deviated off course due to the disruption at its base, allowing me to somehow avoid being pierced.
"It's like fishing with just one line!!"
Using the coiled snake belly attached to the black spear, I tried to pull Reed towards me, but suddenly the weight of the spear hanging on it lightened. The coiled snake belly was unraveled and, together with the other large snake bellies, returned to Reed.
"Even though it was small and inconspicuous, can it really compete head-on with the power of the Dáinsleif? You're really something else."
Reed smiled with a lick of his lips. On the other hand, I grimaced while applying healing magic to the arm torn by the snake belly. The pain was there, but more than that, just in this moment of attack and defense, my physical and mental strength had been drained more than when I fought Bael.
'Gyahahahaha! I'm not done yettt!!'
With Slay's voice, a swarm of large snake bellies approached, gouging the ground. The writhing snake bellies were still in the shape of a whip with blades attached. I couldn't discern how many were coming at me at once from my eyes.
In that case──.
'I'll inform you of the number and direction! Partner, focus on what's in front of you!'
Given our past interactions, I can instantly understand his intentions. So, I concentrate on Gram's voice and tightly grip the black spear.
'Up two, forward three, then left three from there! Retreat to avoid the four coming from the front in a group!'
Following the echoing voice in my head, I swing the spear almost absentmindedly. Sensing the impact of the clashes, each of the large snake bellies doesn't pose much of a threat. With my strength, I can deflect them even head-on. However, when multiple snakes come together, the situation changes. It gets tougher with three or more in a group, and with four, it becomes a real struggle. Gram takes all of this into account when giving instructions.
Thanks to Gram's scouting, I can intercept, but there are just too many to handle. The eight snake bellies keep attacking in rapid succession, leaving no room to catch a breath.
'Below—no, from the ground!?'
Gram was surprised and I reflexively looked down, but I couldn't see the blade. However, right after that, the ground beneath my feet bulged with dust, and in the next moment, the sharp tip of a whip-like blade shot out from the ground with force. Could it be that it had been digging through the ground?
Dodging the trajectory that pierced towards my face by turning my upper body and barely avoiding it, my cheek was roughly torn. I shuddered at the thought that if I had dodged differently, it might have pierced my eye or mouth, but now was not the time to be frozen in fear.
"Hahaha, hahahaha!!"
With laughter that seemed to be enjoying the battle itself, Reed swung his eight snake-like whips. With each passing moment, the fierceness of the blades increased, giving off a wild and untamed vibe.
