Volume 5 Chapter 47 The Invisible Chain
I dodge Bael's claw strikes with a precariousness akin to tightrope walking.
"What an unbelievable toughness. Even more than what my comrade Nils had told me."
"I've been training for this!"
Areas not covered by armor are already covered in numerous cuts, bloodied and I don't have time to use healing magic. I'm starting to worry not just for stamina but also for physical strength.
If I continue to be worn down like this, I'll be pushed back at an accelerating rate. Before that happens, I must make a move.
I'm giving it my all. Right from the start, I'm facing off against Bael with all my might. There's no room for strategy between us. Since the majority of my focus must be on the enemy in front of me (Bael), I have no room to spare for thoughts on tactics.
If by some chance there is room for a "strategy" in this battle...
──It would be in the space between me and Bael.
'Now's the time, partner! Hit 'em hard!'
When Gram's signal came, in an instant, the black spear was switched to a reverse grip, granting it the ability to withstand the recoil of Enchantment - Weight Increase to the fullest extent.
"Take thisssss!"
With a burst of determination from deep within my belly, I energetically hurled it.
"That's a bad move, Black Blade!"
No matter how fast it may be, unless it's a surprise attack, it's difficult to land a hit if Bael's agility is there. Moreover, if he can predict the outcome, hitting the target is impossible.
As expected, Bael leaped to the side, effortlessly dodging the thrown black spear. Taking a bit of a safety margin, perhaps he was wary of the power of the thrown spear even though evasion was easy.
It was greatly appreciated. Thanks to that, space was created.
Right after throwing the spear, before Bael could move to evade, I had already sprinted at full speed.
Bael frowned at my actions. He had already shown scenes of me summoning the Black Spear (Gram) in a position where I had moved away. There was no need to move to retrieve the thrown spear.
And as Bael's gaze headed towards the direction of the Black Spear flying, he finally noticed.
"Weiss!!"
"What the──Ggh!?"
At the sudden voice, Weiss, who was fighting Reed, turned around, only to see the tip of the Black Spear rushing towards him in the air. Since his consciousness had been focused on Reed until just now, his reaction was fatally delayed. Without time to evade, he could only brace his hardened arm to defend against it. Overwhelmed by the force, he was sent flying from the spot. I closed the distance to the now unbalanced Weiss.
"Darn it, let me──"
"Sorry, I'm not letting you go."
Bael tried to stop me by force, but just as he started to run, a snake belly sword wrapped around his arm a bit faster. In Bael's frustrated eyes, he saw Reed's triumphant smile. Even though he should have been paying at least minimal attention while fighting me, his focus shifted towards me running towards Weiss, leaving him completely off guard for a moment.
At this point, Bael seemed to have realized it too.
The sequence of events after I threw the black spear was not a coincidence.
It was all part of the plan between me and Reed.
"You fools, when did you...!"
"Now, why do you think that is?!"
Reed, with a hint of delight, pulled Bael towards him with his sword, swinging his body around and separating him from me.
It's no wonder Bael and the others couldn't see through our plan.
Because all our communication was done through the telepathic channels of the Black Spear (Gram) and the Snake Belly Sword (Slay).
From a distant spot, laughter that sounded like pollution emanated from Slay, only audible to me and Gram. Conversely, it was clear from their expressions that Bael and the others couldn't hear Slay's voice. With that in mind, I wondered if Gram's voice only reached Reed and Slay. Despite struggling at first with the unfamiliar telepathic channel, Gram managed to successfully deliver his voice directly to Reed.
Through Gram, it seemed Reed shared the same concerns as me, as he quickly agreed to our proposal after a moment of surprise. He also indicated the timing for our plan.
The key moment was when Bael entered the line connecting me and Weiss. If I aimed directly at Weiss, Bael, noticing my intentions, would intervene. To prevent Bael from realizing our strategy until the last moment, I targeted the Bael closer to me instead of Weiss, leaving the judgment to Gram, not me.
And then, after throwing the spear, without thinking too much, pursue Weiss - this is all part of the plan I conveyed to Reed. It's been less than a minute since we could communicate through Gram. I've once again realized the experience of a 2nd rank mercenary.
Weiss, who recovered from being knocked down, tries to keep me away by casting magic, but I sweep away the summoned black spear and push forward while closing the distance. Occasionally, the magic hits somewhere on my body, but I continue to push forward regardless. As expected, Weiss's magic is lighter than the magic of the demon (Nils) I fought before. If I protect my vital points and prepare to take hits, I can endure it.
At a certain distance, I boldly leaped forward and swung the black spear high above. In response, Weiss raised his left arm and unleashed magic from his lowered right arm behind him. It seemed like he was willing to sacrifice his left arm to reliably block the spear strike and unleash a high-powered magic attack at point-blank range.
──I later heard this from Gram.
At that moment, I focused all my nerves on swinging the black spear with all my might.
"Zeryaaaaaahhh!!"
I tore apart the invisible "chains" that had entwined my entire body, freeing up all my strength, and with full force, I unleashed the Enchantment - Weight Increase, delivering a decisive strike.
I snapped Weiss's arm that held the black spear, and the spear's tip cut through his shoulder to his side, severing his arm in the process.
