Volume 5 Chapter 35 It's A Rare Encounter, But...

From a casually thrown hand, something like small stones were scattered in large quantities into the air. They fell right in front of me and Reed, right in the midst of the ongoing brawl.

Sounds resembling shattering glass echoed from all around, and in the next moment, magic circles that emitted light appeared on the ground where the stones had fallen. By the time the light subsided, numerous monsters had appeared.

 "What the heck is this──!?"

This method, the magic circles that were briefly visible, gave me a strong sense of déjà vu.

As monsters blocked our path, Weiss had already moved ahead, following Bael and Narinki, leaving this place behind.

Though I wanted to catch up to Bael and Narinki right away, grab them by the collar, and demand answers, the monsters attacked us before that could happen.

 "You weaklings!"

 "Get out of the way!!"

Me and Reed each swung our weapons, driving away the monsters.

 "Back off, back off!"

But Reed fearlessly──or rather recklessly──charged ahead, swinging his sword with numerous chips towards the monsters.

'It's just like in the projected image, or rather, just like I imagined.'

Even though my feelings were conveyed by Gram, Reed, who was rampaging like that, strangely seemed to fit right in. Watching him, there was no sense of danger, only reassurance.

Roars of beasts echoed from all over the square in front of the tavern, which had turned into a battlefield, mixing with the blatant screams that had started to blend in with the human shouts of anger from earlier.

 "Aaaaah!!"

At the edge of my vision, I saw a delinquent being attacked by a monster. Bleeding from his arm, he seemed paralyzed or unable to move, sitting on the ground. The monster bared its fangs at him, ready to deliver the final blow.

In the dark alley, the power of the black spear was too strong, with the potential to penetrate and hit someone in the back. Making a split-second decision, I swiftly pulled out the big hatchet from my waist and hurled it.

The spinning big hatchet flew through the air and precisely embedded itself sideways into the monster's head, burying its blade halfway. As the monster fell lifeless, it collapsed on top of the delinquent who had been slumping. Though I had taken down the monster, the delinquent couldn't withstand the monster's intimidating presence and promptly fainted, foaming at the mouth. It was understandable for a delinquent who only bullies city people to react that way.

'It's good to care for others, but remember, partner, your own safety comes first!'

As I faced the scene, a monster larger than me by at least a full size was about to pounce on me. I braced myself, preparing to repel it with the black spear enchanted with Weight Increase.

 ──Cinchhh!

When a harsh noise reached my ears, "something" wrapped around the monster's body, causing it to stop moving. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was something like a whip with multiple small blades connected by strings. As I scanned my surroundings, I saw that the lines of blades extended to the hilt of Reed's sword.

 "Don't just stand there daydreaming!"

Reed shouted as he forcefully pulled the sword's hilt, causing the lines entwined around the monster to slide, and the consecutive blades tore through flesh. As the blades connected by strings moved away from the monster, they swiftly retracted back to Reed's hand and merged together. When swung as if to wipe off blood, the blade I first saw was now transformed into a sword full of damaged edges.

'A snake belly sword, huh? How dare he use such an eccentric weapon.'

The "chips" in the blade that appeared to be damaged were due to the shape formed by the small blades connected in a series.

When the monster fell, spewing blood from its entire body, the unpleasant sound of flesh and blood haphazardly hitting the ground reached my ears. Looking closer, despite somehow retaining its original form, the monster was in a pitifully torn-apart state.

The title 'Reed the Trampler' made perfect sense given the gruesome scene. With the monster in such a state, its materials would likely be unsellable.

Although I didn't necessarily need help, I was indeed rescued. However, I couldn't bring myself to express gratitude easily, as Reed seemed a bit too proud of himself, arrogantly standing there. It was clear that Reed excelled in strength, achievements, and rank.

 "Take this!!"

Feeling irritated, I wielded the black spear in reverse grip, firmly stepping on the ground as I hurled it towards Reed. Reed's eyes widened as the spear flew past him, piercing through the monster approaching him from behind.

"Hahaha, way to go Black Blade!"

 "You too!"

Ignoring the collapsing monster, Reed looked a bit surprised for a moment, then quickly put on a confident smile. I also summoned my Black Spear (Gram) and returned the smile. I felt a rare sense of rivalry growing within me.

At that moment, Reed slowly raised the arm holding the snake belly sword. What he held was...

'Oh, that's a magic tool for signaling.'

I also had a magic tool hidden in my pocket at all times, which Reed slammed into the ground. With a loud bang, a signal flare soared into the night sky.

"You guys! It's time for work!!"

 """Oooohhh!!"""

As Reed shouted, armed individuals poured into the square from a narrow alley. They were members of Reed's mercenary group. They brandished their weapons and headed towards the monsters rampaging in the square.

Those guys, I've always wondered where they've been up until now, but I know that's not the issue at hand. First things first, we need to take down the monsters.

"Let's go, Black Blade. It's not cool to let amateurs get hurt by monsters any further."

"I get it. But, you better fill me in on everything later."

As I gave him a sharp look, Reed confidently smiled with his sword resting on his shoulder.
