Volume 3 Chapter 14 Meeting
When we got back home, we all waited for everyone to gather.
It happened during dinner time. Toxy and Sandra, who had finished making dinner, appeared in the living room, and shortly after that, Clay and Alex returned.
"After dinner, I have something to discuss with everyone."
As I said that, the atmosphere immediately became tense.
The situation itself was already tense. We had just heard about Moruru being a descendant of ancient dragons, which could potentially lead to inter-country wars.
Ice had been keeping her eyes down the whole time. The three of us, me, Ice, and Moruru, had gone out and now we were back to share what we had learned. Ice seemed nervous, but she never took her eyes off others.
The tension in the whole party was so palpable that I had to specifically say, "Oh, it's fine to discuss this after dinner. It's not something urgent. So, forget about it during dinner."
However, with these words, I think we were able to spend dinner as usual in a friendly atmosphere. I want to enjoy delicious food. I thought that having that mindset is important in situations like this.
After finishing dinner and feeling comfortably full, I brought up, "Well, is it time?"
"...Yeah, go ahead. Tell us."
The tense atmosphere before dinner seemed to dissipate from Toxy. This was the most worrying part about Toxy. I feel like the tension is at the right level.
I spoke up.
"We encountered an assassin targeting Moruru. We managed to drive him away, but he disappeared without leaking any information. He likely committed suicide with poison. He was an adventurer in the category of copper with stealth weapons, which I don't really understand."
Everyone shuddered at those words. In the midst of that, Clay was the first to speak up.
"I've heard the general idea from Alex. So, I understand what happened. Basically, this time it's about how to deal with whoever is targeting Moruru-chan. It's about making that decision."
"Oh, that's it."
"Um, Wade. That kind of discussion should wait until Moruru is asleep..."
"No, we'll do it here while Moruru is present. It's about Moruru, and it's a problem that will likely last longer in Moruru's lifetime than ours. It's better to know now."
Toxy looked at Moruru with a puzzled expression at my assertion. Moruru looked anxious, exchanging glances between me and Toxy.
I said to Moruru.
"Moruru. You have a very strong talent. That's why everyone wants Moruru. Remember the discussion we had during the day? What's happening now is related to that. Probably this time we can protect you ourselves. So, in this situation, please learn what you should do."
"...Study, right?"
"That's correct, it's studying. It's an important study that will determine Moruru's future. Watch carefully, think, and learn."
"Okay. Moruru will study hard."
"You're a good kid."
I gently pat Moruru's head. The worry in Moruru's eyes disappears. I notice that and delve deeper into the matter.
"I want to borrow everyone's wisdom. Who is the enemy? Is there anything else we can learn from the information we've gathered? I want to hear that from everyone and use it as material to protect Moruru."
"Yes."
Sandra raises her hand confidently. Sandra's unwavering composure is reliable, especially in times like this.
"Okay, Sandra."
"I don't really get that whole adventurer with stealth weapons thing, but I understand the scale. In other words, the trump card they're holding back is probably silver, the best."
"What about it?"
"It's a matter of cost. Eujary often complained about it. If it feels like they're making you do odd jobs at the store, then iron is enough. If they're the main bodyguard, copper is sufficient. If there's something you absolutely must protect, then silver for a small group."
"What about gold?"
Sandra ponders Clay's question.
"Silver is quite profitable just by lying around and being on standby. It's usually a daily wage of a silver coin. If that's gold, the daily wage becomes a big silver coin. Ten times as much. Having someone like this as a personal guard is truly top-level for a large organization."
Sandra continues.
"In the world of assassins, they don't hire just anyone. They look for skilled individuals, even if they are not the best. Hiring top-notch assassins can be expensive. It's like having your own personal bodyguard. Only the wealthiest can afford the best assassins."
Clay pondered for a moment and then added,
"In this dungeon city, only the elite fighters are valued. Swords gold are common in war zones, while bows gold prefer forests where dragons roam."
"And those elite torchs only care about dungeons, nothing else."
Clay continued. With Sandra's further explanation, we could gauge the strength of our enemies.
"Let me add something."
Alex, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up.
"Encountering a rare sight like a stealth weapon adventurer, Wade's fate seems to be praised, but well, you probably don't need such compliments right now. Let me explain what a stealth weapon adventurer is concisely."
"Do you know, Alex?"
"As a man with rich experience like me, I know most things. So, the answer to what a stealth weapon adventurer is—this person is a guard and assassin under the lord's care."
