Volume 3 Chapter 12 Ancient Dragon Species
In myths, there exist creatures known as dragons.
Not just any dragon, but a distinct type called "ryuu" in Japanese. They are different from earth dragons, wyverns, and fire dragons.
Among them, there are beings known as ancient dragons, said to be closer to gods than mere creatures.
"For example, Leviathan. This ancient sea dragon once wreaked havoc in ancient times, but now it supports the seas of our world, considered a pillar of the gods."
As we got out of the pool, we gazed at the illustration of Leviathan in a book prepared by Alex.
"Then there's Typhon. This one's really strong. It once defeated Zeus, the main god of this area, in a battle. Now it seems to be somewhere in the lower realms of the human world after losing in a rematch."
In the illustration, a monster battling Zeus, whom I know from my past knowledge, was portrayed. I felt a strong sense of unease as I stared at the illustration.
"Jormungandr. Also known as the World Serpent. It's another ancient dragon from further north. I wonder if it's wandering around the heavenly realm above the clouds. It seems to be incredibly huge."
I've heard of this before. In my past life, I was a moderate otaku. I look at the huge dragon illustration with a serious expression.
"So, this is Echidna. Created by the creator, she was the first living being. Surprisingly, she still hasn't become a god and wanders around aimlessly. This ancient dragon that didn't become a god is her."
Her upper body was that of a woman, while her lower body was in the form of a snake. After confirming everything, I touch Moruru's head and say,
"So Moruru is a friend of this ancient dragon?... How can such a cute child be a friend of such a monster?"
"Well, hold on. Ancient dragons don't have a fixed form. When it's convenient for them, they can completely disappear and walk around in human form."
"How do you know that?"
"I was told."
"By whom?"
"By Echidna."
"...?"
I open the page I had open earlier and point to the monster with a female upper body and a snake lower body.
"By the way, she used to look like a really cool black-haired beauty."
"..."
I furrowed my brows, crossed my arms, and leaned back in the chair.
Then I said,
"It's hard to believe all of a sudden."
"...Yeah, that's true. I mean, even if someone says something more amazing was followed by something even more amazing, it's hard to understand, right?"
Alex said with a wry smile. Then he stood up.
"Well, it's not a big deal. Just keep protecting Moruru as usual. And make sure the fact that she's a Dragon doesn't get revealed. ...If it's a Metamorph Dragon, ten assassins will be come. But an Ancient Dragon is impossible. Other countries would want it."
The word "country" stirred up tension among us. Country. It's a word that doesn't feel real.
"But yeah, it's true. It would be better to have weapons. I'll call that Echidna for Moruru next time. Teach her how to fight against Ancient Dragons."
"O-Okay...?"
Moruru, not understanding what was going on, raised her voice vaguely while tilting her head.
As she did that, Clay came back.
"Alex, were you here? Oh, everyone's here. What's up?"
To Clay's casual question, I scratched my head.
"Ah... I'll tell you tonight. It's not a good time right now."
"Is that so? Well, anytime you can tell me is fine. Alex, about the next story."
"Yeah, that's right. Can't keep an important guest waiting. So, let's do our best."
After saying that, Alex left. What exactly was he telling us to do our best at?
We pondered with serious expressions. Then, Moruru seemed anxious and said,
"Is Moruru a bother...? Am I in the way?"
"No, it's not like that."
I asserted. Then, I lifted Moruru up and patted her head.
"Actually, it's the opposite. Moruru is something really amazing. But it was a bit too amazing, so Papa was just surprised. Everyone likes Moruru, and no one thinks of Moruru as a hindrance."
"Yeah..."
Looking anxious, Moruru clung tightly to me. I gently stroked her back.
Then, I made a suggestion.
"The atmosphere isn't great. Alex, read the situation and talk about this kind of thing. Yeah... how about doing something for a change of mood?"
"Something...?"
While reassuring her, Ice stroked Moruru, saying, "Well, I'm going out."
"We've learned about a serious risk, but there's nothing we can do about it. Fortunately, the problem itself hasn't occurred. So, it's a waste to worry about it, right?"
"I agree with Wade. It's not a problem that can be solved by being depressed. Just put on a minimal disguise and carry on as usual."
I agree with Sandra's words, "Yeah, a disguise is necessary," and I ask Moruru.
"Hey, Moruru. Earlier, Alex said that ancient dragons can change their appearance, right? How about you, Moruru? Can you grow horns on your head, like small ones that don't stick out from your fluffy hair?"
"Horns... What kind?"
"Like small ones that don't stick out from your fluffy hair, almost unnoticeable."
"Like this?"
Moruru closed her eyes and concentrated. I felt a definite change there and touched her head. Horns. Indeed, two small protrusions that could be described as horns had sprouted on the back of her head.
"Yeah, that's great. Truly Moruru."
"Hehe. Moruru is amazing!"
"Yeah, Moruru is Papa's proud daughter!"
"Moruru loves Papa so much!"
As we play around, the atmosphere in the room gradually relaxes.
"...I was really anxious until a moment ago, but maybe it's okay like this."
Toxy said.
"Alex mentioned the ancient dragon mark, right? It's only in the back of the throat, isn't it? Normal people wouldn't have a chance to see that, so if she quietly grow horns, at worst, she'll only look like a Metamorph Dragon. In that sense, it's good that Alex was the first to find it."
"Exactly... Now that I think about it calmly, giving Alex five gold coins was a huge amount of money. We need to have this kind of thing done."
After all, it's equivalent to 15 million yen. Now that we understand the market price, we have to admit that our sense was numb to that price.
"Well, let's go out for a change of pace. Moruru, are you coming?"
"I'm coming!"
"Alright, Moruru is joining. What about everyone else?"
"I'm going too..."
"Ah... sorry, Wade-kun. I'm a bit tired, so I'll pass today. Instead, I'll make dinner for when you come back."
"Then I'll help Toxy with cooking."
"Sandra, you can't cook at all."
"I'll do my best at taste-testing."
"Moruru, scold Sandra for me."
Upon Toxy's request, Moruru raised a small fist and said,
"Sandra! Help with taste-testing properly!"
"If Moruru says so, then I have no choice... I'll do my best at peeling the skin."
"Well done, well done."
Sandra leaned her head towards Moruru, who was petting her. Her expression was full of joy. All the members of the circle at the House are head over heels for Moruru.
"Shall we go with the three of us?"
"Yeah... I'll go get ready real quick."
"Oh!"
Me, Ice, and Moruru decided to go out together.
