Volume 2 Chapter 4 New Member Interview
The next day, leaving the two of them who diligently working on their respective tasks, I went to the guild and found that the recruitment form was missing from the corkboard.
"Oh, looks like we have some applicants already."
Expressing my anticipation to the receptionist, she replied, "Ah, I see. Very well then. Please wait a moment, I'll guide you." I decided not to dwell on her somewhat reserved demeanor.
So, while waiting around the dining hall, a girl with a striking purple ponytail was brought over.
"Uh, nice to meet you! I'm Toxy! N-nice to meet you!"
"Nice to meet you too. I'm Wade."
We shook hands for the time being. Then, Toxy sat down next to me, and we engaged in light conversation.
"So, uh, can I see the member application form for now?"
Back when I was in training, I was drilled on basic reading and writing, so I'm pretty good with languages to the extent that I don't struggle in the guild. I can't help but think I'd be even better if I were in Japan, but hey, this is another world, so it is what it is.
"As for the graduate from 6 months ago, you are bow adventurer and is a copper, and your magic was poison magic..."
As I read that out loud, I noticed Toxy tensing up. Thinking about what that could mean, I realized, "Oh, poison magic is unpopular magic following gravity magic."
"We've both been through some tough times."
I chuckled, and Toxy's tension seemed to ease all at once. Perhaps, because of that, she had been rejected from other member recruitments.
...Job hunting in my previous life was tough too. I got rejected by hundreds of companies. At one point, I even considered ending it all. In the end, though, I died from overwork before I could even think about it.
"Yeah, I think you're good up to this point. Honestly, we could just accept you as a new member now, but I still want to ask you a few more questions."
"Y-yes! Please go ahead...!"
Her eyes were wavering with a mix of hope and anxiety. I pretended not to notice and continued with my questions.
"You don't have a criminal record, do you?"
"Nope. ...Is this because of my poison magic?"
"No, I ask everyone that question. It’s just a standard part of the interview process."
"I see. Please continue."
"So, how do you use your magic?"
"I usually coat my arrows with poison. I'm pretty skilled with a bow."
"I see you have a copper-level bow adventurer badge, but you can use three different poison magics?"
"Yeah, I can make solid poison with Poison Solid, liquid poison with Poison Liquid, and poison mist with Poison Mist."
Okay, so she can create poison in solid, liquid, and gas forms. Depending on the strength, that could be quite a powerful skill set.
"Can you explain what it means when it says you can do healing?"
"Well, depending on how you use it, poison can be turned into medicine. I'm pretty good at detoxifying, and I can mix intermediate-level potions on the spot if needed."
"That's a relief. It was a real bummer when Ice got poisoned during the Chimera incident. Having Toxy around would've fixed that. So, Toxy..."
"Uh, yeah..."
"You're hired. Looking forward to working with you."
"Yes! Yesssss!"
Toxy jumped up in excitement. She was so thrilled that she didn't even notice my outstretched hand as she danced with joy.
Then, she grabbed my hand with both of hers and shook it vigorously.
"Thank you, thank you! I've been solo for the past six months... I wanted to adventure with everyone, but I couldn't... Thank you so much!"
Toxy said amidst tears, drawing attention from those around us. "I just thought you'd be a useful addition to the team," I shrugged.
"Still, thank you so much! Oh, by the way, Wade?"
"Yeah, I'm Wade."
"Nice to meet you, Wade! By the way, what kind of your magic? Earth?"
"Gravity."
"Whoaaaaa..."
There was a mysterious cheer. Then, with keen interest, she bombarded me with questions.
"Hey, hey, I heard gravity magic just slows you down, but Wade, you're copper, right? How did you get so strong? And, gravity magic is the most avoidable magic. How did you form your party? And, and..."
"Uh, I'll answer one by one, just hold on a sec."
I furrowed my brow as I responded to the rapid-fire questions.
"First off, gravity magic doesn't slow you down, it makes things heavier. It can also make them lighter. So, I'm pretty fast—I can keep up with wind magic."
"No way! Show me later! Okay, next question, about the party..."
...
......
.........
"Then, I jumped in to help when the ice magician was in a pinch, and one thing led to another, and we ended up with an extra member. The other one I recruited was tough and reliable from the party I helped."
"Wow! So that's how it works—helping out gets you into a party. I'll remember that!"
"Hmm, I see," Toxy nodded, pondering. She's quite an interesting person to talk to.
"I also want to know what the other members are up to."
"Yeah, I have a general idea, but I don't know the specifics. Let's go check it out."
"Great! Let's go!"
With a new member on board, Toxy and I stood up together and left the guild.
First, let's go meet Ice. Finding Clay on a solo quest will be tough.
