Volume 2 Chapter 37 Trial (Heartwarming)

Volume 2 Chapter 37 Trial (Heartwarming)

The next day, after finishing our early morning rune writing study, we had breakfast and then scattered around as we pleased.

Three of us went to the nearby forest to casually test out the effects of the runes.

I had the same goal of confirming the effects of the runes, but it was Alex who suggested it to me.

'If Wade uses rune magic in the forest, he might be in trouble. Try it in the city first."

It seems that encountering something through the 'trial' rune doesn't always mean facing a strong enemy.

Accidents, disasters, natural calamities. It includes such things, and they lead to growth.

Therefore, I won't be given a trial that I absolutely cannot overcome. But even so, it remains a trial.

'In the city, at most you might get hassled by some thugs or get into a minor scuffle. In the forest, strange accidents could happen, so try it out in the city first.'

 It was like this.

"Also, I want to try out the new magic of gravity magic."

Upon checking, it seems that my new magic is called [Point Shift]. In other words, it allows me to change the point of gravity.

Just before entering the city, I muttered, "Should I use it here?"

 "Point Shift!"

A sense of floating came over my body. However, it was only for a moment.

 "Wha-what!?!"

I looked ahead and started falling horizontally above the city. This is bad! While falling, I shouted.

 "Weight Reduce! Point Shift!"

Using the roof I barely caught sight of as a reference point, I landed. Since I'm light now, there's no pain upon landing.

"I'm dizzy, going up, oh no, falling, falling..."

...But that doesn't mean I'm not panicking.

I rolled and barely stopped on the roof of a house. Then, I forcefully stood up with the power of my muscles and exhaled.

"...I'm glad I didn't have to use this magic on the spot."

It's harder to control than I thought. But it seems like a magic that expands possibilities in return for its difficulty.

Quietly descending from the roof to the ground through the alley, I pondered.

There are many things that can be done with [Point Shift]. I've been able to float lightly in the air by making myself lighter than air before.

However, the speed was slow, and the fundamental movement speed in the [Weight Reduce] state depended only on the strength of my legs.

With this [Point Shift], regardless of my own strength, high-speed movement becomes possible.

"This is going to make outdoor battles a lot more fun."

Excitedly thinking about that, I envisioned a bright future ahead.

Now, onto the next, I glanced at the new gauntlet on my left hand.

The runes written there say 'trial', 'come', 'oneself'. They were carved by me yesterday with a carving knife.

 "Expect the unexpected."

I lightly touched the quickly carved runes and then gently stroked the whole thing.

The runes faintly shimmered, and the light faded away as if blending into the entire back of my hand.

 "..."

 Huh, did this actually work?

I looked around. At first glance, there didn't seem to be anything unusual.

But there was something slightly noticeable.

 "Sandra! You're wandering off again!"

"Shut up, it's none of your business. I'm already an adventurer. And a full-fledged silver rank at that. If you understand, then don't interfere."

"What nonsense! No matter how much time passes, you are still my granddaughter! I will interfere, that's for sure!"

 "...Wow."

It was Sandra and the old lady who gave me a memo on the characteristics of the gods when I was kicked out of the library were arguing.

I hesitated for a moment, then approached someone I was not unfamiliar with.

"Hey, Sandra. I also saw the old lady yesterday."

 "Oh, Wade."

"Huh? Oh, about yesterday... What, were you aiming for Sandra?"

"What do you mean by 'aiming'?"

I responded with a wry smile, and the old lady said, "Hmm, seems like I was mistaken..." as she backed off.

 Sandra then chimed in.

"Yeah. There's no need to aim, Wade is my fated person."

She said as she clung to my arm.

"Huh? Sandra, saying silly things again."

"Sandra is just saying whatever she wants."

"Ah... I pretty much understand. My granddaughter causing trouble."

The old lady, holding a long cane, lightly hit Sandra with it. It seemed quite painful, as Sandra held her head and crouched down on the spot.

"Ouch... Unforgivable old hag, you're dead meat!"

After taking an additional hit, Sandra crumpled even further. The old lady who delivered the blow smirked and said,

"Hmph, you talkative foolish granddaughter... Oh, excuse me. This is not something to show others."

She casually straightened her cane and chuckled, "Hehe, she's quite the sly one, isn't she?" I found it amusing.

"So, boy, what brings you here? Is it for this foolish granddaughter?"

"Well, it's not entirely wrong, but I just happened to come across it by chance."

The old lady seemed unsatisfied with that response and narrowed her eyes.

"Hmm... It smells like magic. But not Transformation Magic. Is it that gauntlet? If it's an equipment, then it must be runes."

"Wait, how did you know all that?"

I was astonished. And then, the old lady started to boast.

"Huh, back in my younger days, I traveled around the world studying magic. I even went to the far eastern islands of Jipangu. The magic there was quite unique."

Japan is called Jipangu!? That's Japan? Oh, I'm curious. I'd like to visit someday.

"Alright, show me a bit. ...What are these runes? Did someone give them to you?"

"No, I carved them myself. I thought I might use them if the enemies were too weak and lacked a challenge."

"...If that's your purpose, then these runes are indeed suitable for that... At first glance, you look like a novice who got tricked by a fake rune master, you."

"You're right, it does seem that way."

"You're quite nonchalant... Well, they do light up on their own when danger approaches, so they can be useful for sensing threats."

"Wow, I didn't know they had that effect too."

As we chatted casually, Sandra suddenly interjected between me and the old lady.

"Alright, old hag, that's enough. If you want to keep talking to my Wade, it'll cost you a gold coin."

 Expensive.

"I don't belong to Sandra, though."

"You'll eventually be mine, so it's the same."

Kukuku, I never thought I'd see Sandra jealous. Well, well. Little boy, come with me. Help me convince Sandra."

 "Huh? Uh... um"

I look at Sandra. Sandra is shaking her head vigorously.

 The old lady said,

"If you come, I'll lend you books about your god. Learn all the magic you want, become as strong as you want."

 "I'm going."

"Wade, you're such a fool, abd stubborn. If Wade goes, I have no choice but to go. I don't care anymore."

Despite saying she doesn't care, Sandra follows me and the old lady from three steps behind.
