Volume 1 Chapter 2 Memories From A Past Life
On the day I was taught Slow Magic, I seemed so worn out that I couldn't hear anything around me.
When I woke up, I felt like I had a really bad dream. I was tossing and turning all night. It was a really awful dream.
In the dream, I was like what you'd call a corporate sl*ve. Every day, I willingly squeezed myself into the sl*ve ship called a train and faced a computer in a building called a company until dawn.
Exhausted, I collapsed in the dream. And as I drifted away, I woke up in reality.
And I muttered,
"...So, I was reincarnated into another world..."
It seems so. I just found out. I can't remember my past life's name or anything, but I was reincarnated.
"I can't really feel it..."
Feeling a bit more casual than before I remembered my memories, I got up from the floor. It's not time to wake up yet, but self-morning practice is allowed.
I went out to the sports field, holding my imitation sword in hand, and stood in front of the training dummy for sword training. It looks like a scarecrow. As usual, I practiced with my imitation sword, striking the training dummy energetically.
However, when it comes to gravity magic, I was really off yesterday. I thought it was just a magic that slows down my movements.
Then, I felt something strange and stopped. Gravity magic? Does it slow down my movements?
"...Gravity magic, you mean it's that gravity?"
Huh? I stopped in my tracks. No way. That's impossible. Why is a gravity-based magic, like the one used by the strongest characters in manga, being called Slow Magic and being made fun of?
I look at my right hand. There are symbols carved by the evangelist, with the name of the god Newton in the center. Newton, huh. Does it mean universal gravitation? If all great people are treated as gods, then there is no god who controls gravity more than Newton.
"Let's give it a try."
I traced the pattern on the back of my right hand - the magic seal, and displayed the magic I could use now. Thanks to magic or the power of the god, it floated up from my hand.
When it comes to magic, it's not like you can suddenly use all kinds of magic related to that magic just by imagining it. For example, if it's fire magic, at first you can only produce a fireball, and you need to develop the magic seal on your right hand.
And that development is basically the person's own growth, where by fighting, improving in some way, and gaining experience, the magic seal grows and learns new magic, or so I've heard.
...It's just like a game.
Anyway, I conjured the gravity magic seal and saw the name of the one magic I could use.
"Weight Increase, huh."
Although I had a rough idea of what to expect, I raised my sword in preparation and chanted the magic.
"Weight Up!"
Immediately after, I was crushed under the weight imposed by my own magic, equivalent to that of several people.
Crunch.
It may be that the concept of gravity does not yet exist in this world.
I realized this while having breakfast in the cafeteria. The old lady serving food today was so generous with the portions that my thoughts were racing as I ate.
Before regaining my memories from my past life, I didn't realize that gravity was a concept. Or rather, I simply didn't know.
In this world where there doesn't even seem to be compulsory education, it feels like a completely medieval European setting. The noble class may be aware of it, but regular folks like me certainly have no idea.
And it's not good that the first magic is about adding weight. If someone who doesn't even know what gravity is were to excitedly activate it right away, their body would only feel heavier, leading to nothing but despair.
As I pondered this while munching on my food, someone plopped down next to me.
"Hey, Wade-kun! Isn't it a great morning today?! Don't you think so?"
It was Frain, who had been taught fire magic yesterday. I found him really annoying, so I made a displeased face.
"Gahahaha! Hey, don't make such a gloomy face! Isn't today the day we're supposed to learn exciting magic? We're getting taught magic by the top achievers, you know!"
"..."
I continued eating, ignoring him.
"After this, the rest of our classmates will also start getting taught magic, right? And then, those who get good magic will climb up the ranks! So, what kind of magic did Wade-kun get?"
"...Gravity magic."
"Huh! Gr-Gravity magic!? The famous Slow Magic!?"
Frain's shout drew everyone's attention to me. Even those who didn't know about my magic started saying things like, "Seriously... Wade got that?" and "Well, maybe he won't even get a bronze adventurer's license at graduation."
Annoying...
"Hey hey hey! What are you gonna do now!? Wade-kun, who's been the top achiever and breezed through any task with a cool face! Can you keep that cool face even at a time like this?"
After saying that, Frain burst into laughter. I was getting really annoyed, so I called out to him, "Hey Frain."
"I get that you're happy that your rival is no longer a threat, but honestly, you don't have time for stuff like this. Being an adventurer means facing death at every turn, you know? Don't sweat the small stuff."
"...Huh?"
Frain gritted his teeth and clenched his fist. I could see he was about to punch, so I acted quickly and grabbed his wrist to stop him.
"It's mealtime now. Let it go."
"-----!"
Frain shook off my hand and stood up. He glared at me as if I was his parent's enemy, and said,
"Hey, Wade. Let's have a mock battle in the magic arena the day after tomorrow. You wouldn't dare to run away, right?"
"..."
I don't really feel anything if he says I ran away, so there's no need to go along with it.
But I admit, I'm a bit weak to this kind of invitation.
"Okay, let's do it. The day after tomorrow."
"Hmph. You arrogant jerk...! Look forward to it on the day after tomorrow. I'll beat you with fire magic."
"Yeah."
Frain seemed satisfied as he lifted his plate of food and walked away. I quickly looked away from him and focused on cramming food into my mouth with the little time left.
